I'd like to weigh in and say that I dropped D:OS2 right after the boat. The writing was unbearable. Oh, and that narrator...

Me neither. Warfare is the typical frontline fighter tree in DOS2.
I'll take your word for that too. I dropped that game after the tutorial.

Let's be real there isn't a single game in existence where RtwP combat is any good.
Baldur's Gate 2 beats any TB game ever made.

Pretty sure that the Warfare tree had as many skills as any of the magic ones.
I'm not familiar with 5e, so I'll take your word for it.

I'm not going to get into what "feels" more "realistic". To me, both feel equally contrived.
And if melees don't need much micro, then that means their gameplay potential is wasted because you're just pointing them in a general direction and letting them autoattack. Which to me, "feels" "boring".
Why? They do the same thing in turn based combat.

I find it strange that people say that TB breaks immersion, is artificial or whatever, but RT with pause is fine. I mean, it's essentially the same contrivance, except that you mostly leave it on autopilot until the NPC script ****s up. Then you pause, correct and re-engage auto-pilot. Either that or you furiously micromanage your 4- or 6-man party, issuing new instructions every time a character finishes their current action, turning the game into a micro turn spacebar-mashing fiesta.
Disagree. RTwP is objectively faster and feels more "realistic". Also, you don't have to pause all the time. Melee characters don't need much micromanagement so you can focus on the spell casters.

I hope a dwarf companion will make it in. I hope they will talk and not be the butt of jokes.

Are my expectations too unrealistic?
It's Larian. Expect lots of quirky dialogue.

How's that relevant to the question of why other developers don't use the mechanic?
I was speaking specifically about Larian. Other devs probably feel like most players wouldn't want to play as an NPC instead of a custom char.

Thank God that the first printed book wasn't poorly written because we would abandon printing following that logic.
You'd have a point if this was Larian's first game, not their eight. They just don't know how to write.

pretty clever
wonder why other developer doesn't do that more often
Probably because they were poorly written.

I categorise Bioware and Larian games a fundamentally different genres - first being singleplayer high presentation focused, mostly linear, story driven adventures, while the latter are sandbox, system driven coop games.
The only issue I have with Baldur's Gate 3, is its connection to BG1&2 while being apples and oranges situation.
And that's my issue with what I have seen so far. It looks like D:OS2 mixed with Dragon Age. It looks and feels nothing like Baldur's Gate.

Well, Bioware didn't exactly put the bar high with their "miniature giant space hamster" writing. I'm sure their humour will be more than adequate.
Bioware created some memorable characters in BG and BG2. Can't say the same for Larian.

Looks like it's going to be turn based... And it has the same braindead writing D:OS2 had. They should have just called this Divinity: Original Sin 2.5 and let someone more competent make BG3. I guess there's still Pathfinder to look forward too, but this is really disappointing.

I think I'll just go with greatswords. There's plenty to choose from at least.

While we're on the subject, which would you say is better, Brute or pure Barbarian/Berserker? I had a lot of fun with a pure barb in PoE 1.

Bleeding Cuts is very good with Blood Thirst. And both axes are nice. But they have the same problem: single damage type (slash) which is bad for a Devoted. If you are no Devoted then they are a good pick. And Amra you can get very early. Amra also allows to put Blood Frenzy onto enemies in an AoE since its Carnage-like ability can crit. You need 25 MIG though.
Eh. Staves aren't really my thing.Chronoprismatic Quarterstaff. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every mofo in the dungeon, accept no substitutes.
I'll consider Willbreaker. What's your opinion about the two-handed axes? They look pretty cool too.In my opinion the best weapon for Brute (especially if Devoted is involved) is The Willbreaker.
It has two damage types (no need to switch), it has awesome enchantments and most importantly: it has Body Blows as modal which lowers Fortitude by 25. That's not only awesome for Brute Force (target Fortitude with every attack roll if it's the lower defense) but also for Knockdown and Mule Kick (targets Fortitude).
In a testing setup with a single class Barb + Retaliation (which omits recovery and thus favors battle axes with bleeding cuts) the Willbreaker was still equally good because you will hit/crit more often.
Seriously: I think there is no better weapon option (if you look at the whole playthrough from beginning to end) than Morning Star for a Brute - if you don't want to switch weapons. If you want to switch then of course there's always an optimal weapon for every encounter. And Chromoprismatic Staff is very potent.
If you have a Beckoner in the party and you are a Berserker then Grave Calling is also top notch. Of course it's not two handed. Just as an example for a weapon that is very good with the right "conditions".
Morning Star is always good and never bad for a Brute - that's why I think it's he best pick overall.
I plan on doing Devoted/Berserker so I guess axes are out. I'll give Willbreaker a spin.

Oathbreaker's End.
What's the earliest you can acquire it on PoTD?
Amra at the Radiant Court
How does Amra's Frenzy work in conjunciton with a Berserkser's Frenzy? Would it just override it? Because that would suck.

I haven't played Deadfire since the vanilla game and with all these DLCs I see that there are a lot of new items. I want to do a Brute playthrough with a two-handed weapon, but I'm not sure what to choose. Opinions?

I got lvl 6 ranger and he is a beast, but I dont have many spells yet to tell how good those are
What favored enemies did you choose? Also, what style? Personally, I'm tired of the dual-wielding ranger, I'm thinking of doing an Aragorn-style two-handed ranger.
So far most usefull would be whatever trolls are but I don't know how it will look futher in game, you can't go wrong with human or undead (I got undead). I have gone with something not related to bows or dual wield but personally I feel like archery is strongest pick for him
Alright, thanks. I'm more of a melee guy so I'll stick to big swords. Shame I can't have a hamster animal companion.

Thinking of playing a ranger, but I don't know which favored enemies to go for. I'm thinking about humans, undead and outsiders because those are always a sure bet in cRPGs. What else should I go for? Also, are ranger spells in Pathfinder any good?

Gods are robots since they were created and programmed by Engwithans (maybe with more advanced AI). So it would be cool to have something like Terminator story plot: say, we dive into some old library to learn how exactly gods were created, what was the life before their creation, maybe even return to the past to influence the future... Personally, I hate Deadfire for the lack of dignified options in dialogues with gods (you are an ***-licker or you are insta-killed); if Josh thought it would be a good idea to rub player's face on the ground - well, he has failed.
Eothas says they were mortal before they were gods.
