  1. I've been fooling around with Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney. I'm a big fan of both series, so dipping into a game which features both of them brings a big smile to my face. It's basically like playing both games at once... the game is split into several chapters, each chapter going either down the Professor Layton route with the gathering of picarats and solving of puzzles, or the Ace Attorney route, complete with courtroom cross-interrogation action.

The story is so-so, but what surprises me is how well Phoenix Wright is integrated into the 3D environment of the game. Since the AA series was completely 2D until this installment, I was afraid that 3D would erase the charm the 2D graphics had, but after playing the PW segments, these fears have been put to rest.

Oh, and I think this game's a great tool for advanced Japanese learners who want to expand their vocabulary as all kanji has furigana as well.

Can't wait to dig further into the mystery of Labyrinth City!

  2. I would agree on chinise, but not on others.

Japans and Koreans know very well english language, but they are more confortable in JRPG rather than a typical occidental RPG: how many people there have played Baldur's Gate instead of Final Fantasy?

What about supporting a comunity who is here and claim for attention instead an ipotetical comunity that hides itself in non-english forums?

I don't know which Japan you are referring to, definitely the Japan I've been living in for the past five years or so.

I work for a major gaming publisher, surrounded by hardcore gamers from morning to evening every day. Of the 300 or so people in my entire department, you can count proficient English speakers on one hand and still have fingers left (myself included in the count). Hardly anyone considers even picking up Western games unless they are localized, even the most hardcore of them, unless the dialogue is severely limited. PE being a very dialogue heavy adventure would require full localization in Japanese to be even CONSIDERED by Japanese gamers.

Localizing games is VERY cost effective... you will definitely get your investment back if you do so in certain markets.

I myself would love to have an Icelandic translation. It would definitely NOT be financially viable, but considering the limited number of people, it would not only give the game a spotlight in Iceland, but it would also be considered a cultural heritage due to the limited number of video games released in the Icelandic language.

  3. Finally finished Uncharted: Golden Abyss today. It was a nice game but to say that the boss battles are underwhelming is an understatement. They're 100% QTE that use the touch screen.

I bought a copy of Super Stardust Delta (the Vita version of Super Stardust HD). It's really, really addictive... really good. I can see myself spending hours upon hours playing it. My only gripe is that the only way to look at the high score list (and get me on it!) is to connect by wi-fi, which I unfortunately do not have access to.

  4. I've been playing Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the Vita... at chapter 26 in I'm enjoying it immensely. It's a tad longer than most Uncharted games chapter wise, but each chapter is bite sized (less than 30 minutes), so you end up with around 10 hours of gameplay in total if you skip about half of the puzzles/collectibles. It may not be as well written as Uncharted 2 and 3, but the gameplay is true to the series and you get attached to the characters in the game.

I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying the Vita in February.

  5. Touch My Katamari

    This just sounds so wrong.

Well, the Katamari series has been always been wrong on so many levels. That's what makes it so special.

Anyway, I bought Uncharted: Golden Abyss today after I heard it had full English support (couldn't stand the thought of listening to Drake speak Japanese). So far, so good.

  6. I've played the beta for about 2 hours (it unlocked 1am local time). Although I was expecting it to be similar to World of WarCraft, I didn't expect it to be exactly the same. Kind of disappointed that, at least during your early levels, it is pretty much just a carbon copy of World of WarCraft.

  7. Anyone play Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light on PC? If so, can you use the pc-xbox controller with it? Thought hubby might like it for the long weekend but he likes using the controller.

Yup, it has a native support for the Xbox 360 controller, so you shouldn't encounter any problems.

I've been super busy the past few weeks, but I still have found time to pour 10 hours into Skyrim. I'm amazed with just how expansive and FUN it is. I didn't particularly care for Oblivion, but Skyrim fixes a lot of the things I disliked about Oblivion. When I heard they were getting rid of the stats I was kind of disappointed, but I have to admit that I kind of like how they handle character progression in it, with the skills. Now, if only they had spears and polearms...

Looking forward to spending more time playing it in the coming weeks and months!

  8. After two weeks of excruciating wait my copy of Dark Souls has finally arrived from the UK. Two weeks for one box in priority mail? It's even further to my home country (Iceland) and it only takes FIVE days from there. I wish the royal mail people would have delivered it straight into my hands so I could spit on them for being the slowest mail service I know.

I finished the tutorial (Undead Asylum) and ventured a bit into the Undead Burg. Unfortunately I won't be able to invest much time into it in the coming days, but I look forward to sitting down for extended periods in the coming weeks. Until then I'll have to be content with just running between bonfires, or even scour small areas around bonfires, farming souls.

Before that I finished Shadow of the Colossus. ICO awaits me (as well as SotC on higher difficulties).

  9. Dungeon Siege III has finally been unlocked in Japan. Unfortunately, this happened when I was in the middle of final exams, but now that I'm finished I have time to play games (until I go out of town for the summer vacation, that is). Long story short, I've put a couple of hours into it and I'm really enjoying it. I wasn't a big fan of the Dungeon Siege series, but I'm enjoying both the story as well as the combat system in this one.

I've also been playing a bit of Cthulhu Saves the World. It's an interesting take on the Lovecraft horror, to say the least. Totally worth the money I spent on it (and Breath of Death VII: The Beginning).

  10. When is the last time you heard of a Hindu or Chinese, or a Polish immigrant planning a religiously motivated bombing attack?

Not to be that guy, but...

Europol's EU Terrorism Situation and Trend Report (TE-SAT) records a total of 249 terrorist attacks in the EU in 2010, in which seven people died and scores of others were injured. Most of these were related to violent separatist, nationalist, or anarchist activities. Three attacks were attributed to Islamist terrorist groups, of which two were aimed at causing mass casualties

    Source.

Granted, it's not the United States, but it shows just how ridiculous the focus on Islamic terrorist groups is considering the amount of non-muslim terrorists.

Edit: Yes, most of them were politically motivated, but there is really no difference between politically and religiously motivated terrorist attacks. The one in Norway is on the edge of being political and religious (and I lean to call it more politically rather than religiously motivated). Nevertheless, the motivation of a terrorist attack doesn't make it any better.

  11. Nintendo 3DS will cost much less from August 12.

Now that the price will be slashed from 25.000 JPY to 15.000 JPY I might actually want to buy it. I'm going to have to buy it in the future any way due to my new job... and I'd rather have fun playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition this summer rather than next winter, when I have less free time... and when the PlayStation Vita comes out.

  12. All in all, I believe I have been constructive enough and given the developers feedback for a

improved game. All one needs to do is READ what I had writeen to see that.

You shouldn't be rude when you are trying to present constructive arguments. Your post was rude and I wouldn't be surprised if developers would simply ignore it for the language in which you present your arguments. No one takes foul mouth seriously.

Also, it would be nice if you would just write in a normally sized font.

  13. I can highly recommend the BIT.TRIP games. BIT.TRIP BEAT and BIT.TRIP RUNNER are both available on Steam (50% off!) and the rest of the series is available on the Nintendo Wii. Great games (although the difficulty can be a tad brutal) from a small developer in California.

VVVVVV is another excellent indie platformer from Terry Cavanagh with excellent soundtrack by Magnus Palsson aka SoulEye. Check the demo here, get the rest of the game on Steam.
