  1. Epic is a symptom. The problem is DRM. Suppose you buy the game on Steam or some other service that requires DRM.

Suppose that Epic's exclusivity gambit pays off big and they buy the service you bought your games from. Now you are Epic's customer. It doesn't matter whether you want to be Epic's customer. You don't have a choice (well, you could attempt to pirate all of the games you thought you owned, but that isn't a good choice). Your game library goes to whoever bought the service.

If they now have a monopoly (a common tendency in tech. - consolidation to the point of monopoly), they may decide to charge you a monthly fee to play the games you "own." They may decide to do other consumer unfriendly things. Who knows?

Or, you can refuse to buy anything with DRM. You then own your games. If your vendor gets bought by another vendor or just goes out of business (two very common occurrences in tech.), you still own them. You might need to start making your own backup copies if you were relying on your vendor for backups.

Anyhoo, it's been fun Obsidian. If The Outer Worlds makes it to GoG (and is still relevant when it gets there), I will certainly consider purchasing it.

I really do not see (or hear) what other people are complaining about. The delivery sounds fine to me. It's literally like "oh hey, what a fun surprise, it turns out the other guy (whom I just killed in cold blood) is right after all."

    that being said, LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE.

In all fairness, that's not what he said tho. Saying, what do you know? And then you're right, is contradictory and weird. Its comical and confusing and being called out as such.

When he says "What do you know?" it means something like "Well, how about that?" or "Well, that's surprising."

It isn't really contradictory, but the reading makes it sound like he may have literally meant  "What do you (as in, the guy he just shot) know?"

In the last sentence, I meant 'literally' literally (sigh - maybe someday people will stop using 'literally' when they don't mean it and we can go back to just using it without clarification    ).

  3.

In fact, it would be great, that Vela was part of your group, but depending on what you did with her in the first game, she had a different personality depending on her past.

im reminded that there was a precedent for this. kara from phantasy star III becomes an entirely different character depending on your choices in prior generations.

obv implementing this in an obs style crpg would require herculean effort on devs part, while PSIII has to change relatively little.

is still amusing that it once happened. there prob other, more recent, examples but this was the first that came to mind.

It could probably be done with about the same level of effort as the other companion characters. They have the reputation system. Vela could start the game with a partial reputation profile that depends on the previous games and then develop similar to the other characters.

  4. I would like to see Eder, Ydwin, Rekke, Fassima and, of course,  Vela.

Whichever characters we see again, there should be some evidence of character arc. E.g., if Eder only wants to pet the rabbits, I think an opportunity will have been missed (not that he shouldn't want to pet the rabbits, but he should want other things too). Fassima should lose her defeated outlook and  turn into a major badass etc.

We had a whole thread on Vela already. I think Pillars 3 needs to happen if only just to realize the events outlined in the Vela thread.

  5. Just want to know if you guys really think that cloud gaming is the future or agree with Sony CFO that they will continue with console gaming.

If cloud gaming is the future, then gaming is not in my future.

I suspect that there are enough people to constitute a market for single player, story driven games.

  6. Well... They may not have the people, but all derivatives of copyrighted binaries still belong to the copyright holder most of the time, so I assume many libraries can do what GOG did on many occassions: Just grab a crack or download an illegal copy and start from there.

That might work, but I think that would fall under work not done by the library staff and not be in accord with the legal decision. Maybe one of our resident lawyers can give a more informed opinion than I can though.

  7. See the video for the gory details.

The tl;dr version is that libraries are trying to get exemptions from copyright law to allow them to bypass DRM on old games in order to preserve the games. The Library of Congress has given them a partial ok - libraries can do this but can't enlist volunteers to help. That essentially means it won't get done because libraries don't typically have the people to do what is necessary.

In three years this will be revisited. If you care about what happens to old games when the DRM servers go dark, you might want to be aware of what's going on.

  8. Welcome back, Matt.

(Cue Silvio Dante imitating Michael Corleone: "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in")

In addition to  the responses you get here, there is a list of builds in the other sub-forum that people have tried out and posted about. There is a pinned post with the full list.

p.s. Single class monk. Weapons, we don't need no steeeenking weapons.

  9. Heh. Good call Gromnir. The level of toxic bitterness is (almost) high enough. Of course, it's missing disingenuous concern for the welfare of Augustus Octavius and accompanying poor career advice for same. Nevertheless, a clear improvement all around.

every obsidian related chrisA post from the past three years should be replaced with a link to the following:

    HA! Good Fun!

  10. I was very happy with the first PoE physical game so I backed the second, I didnt know I was getting a bait and switch.

I got my physical copy today and opened it up. Theres no disc, no manual, just a thank you piece of paper and a card with a download code on it. This certainly wasnt stated on the rewards page and this is very deceptive. I will not be purchasing a game from you again. 70 bucks for a useless piece of plastic holding another useless piece of plastic. Keep your code too, I wont be using it.

Presumably they didn't intend to rip you off, but, rather,  came at this from the perspective that downloading is easy. Since that is not the case for you, you might want to DM one of the devs and see if they can help you.

  11.

By the way - and that Ansalon got right but was critized - Miscreant's Leather is the best dps armor. That's because if you use Cutthroat Cosmo (or Abraham) the recovery penalty of the leather will be smaller than the 10% speed bonus you get from it. That means that you will be faster with Miscr. Leather + Cutthroat Cosmo than with a robe (+Cutthroat Cosmo ;)). AND you will have more AR as a bonus on top.

My claim was supposed to be this item is the one who has the best mix of survivability/recovery time for a dpser. I'm assuming most people understand that 0% recovery of a robe is faster then 10% recovery of this armor ;)

Did you miss Boeroer's point? If you choose the right pet, a character with Miscreant's Leathers will be faster than one with a robe.

  12. I was taking it separately and with one character. Could being in stealth-mode be a cause? Pity obsidian doesn't employ a bigger bug-stomping team.. :/

I've seen the bug that Boeroer mentioned, but I have always been able to take the items individually in stealth-mode. You may have found a new bug. (You can report it in the bugs section of the forum.)

The only things that might stay on the shelves are ship supplies, if you are maxed out, but that doesn't explain why you can't steal a magic item.

  13. Hello,

So, I'm working on a Holy Slayer for a Principi character I'm planning on running - I like the idea of a more disciplined sort of pirate, compared to some of the Principi rabble. I'm considering Bleak Walker, with a focus on Aggressive, Cruel, and Clever as my dispositions of choice, and a Lawful Evil leaning, but I'm worried that the subclass might not fit in with the Principi philosophy that well. Darcozzi is, on the whole, a more thematically appropriate choice, but I don't really like their Lay on Hands buff as much.

I don't see why you couldn't do that from a RP perspective.

Your character is the Dread Pirate Roberts of the Deadfire and probably has ambitions to take over the Principi.

If their philosophy isn't a good match with your character's, well then their philosophy will just have change, possibly by force, won't it?

  14. I for one quite like the ship combat mini-game, but I would like to figure out how to know which way I'm facing the other ship. There is some sort of guidance in the form of the round dial thing in the middle but I can't seem to get how it relates to my actions, and thus I can't quite seem to grasp how I'm positioned in relation to my enemy (victim). Turning starboard and port, I guess means 90° turns to the left or right, and jibe means the full 180°. So far so good, but somehow turning doesn't seem to correspond with the ships direction around the middle dial. But maybe they do and I just can't see it.

     TLDR; You're in the middle.

     So, for example:

At the beginning of combat, your bow faces the enemy, so full speed ahead (or half sail) takes you closer. If you turn twice to the same side (port or starboard), your stern will be towards the enemy and full speed ahead moves you further away from the enemy.

Similarly, If you turn to starboard (right) the black enemy ship icon will move to your left (port) side (because when you turn to the right the enemy will be on your left) same story for turning to port.

When you jibe. the black enemy ship icon on the outside of the dial will move to the other side of the circle but what really happened was that you turned your ship so that the other side was facing the opponent.

I hope the above makes sense.

  15. All your examples are of movies. Can you name any video games where the hero's participation doesn't matter?

Of course - you can too. Sports games (the home team won, but Joe Blow still needs to go to work and pay his mortgage - nothing has changed). quake 3, racing games, rhythm games etc. and, of course, some games don't have a hero.

So, let's restrict it to RPGs.  It's a good question. Are there RPGs where the main character could have just stayed home, like Indiana Jones?

I arrived late to the RPG party (as an 'old', I don't have as much experience as many others here who have been playing games since birth) .

So, I will leave it here and see if we get an answer from someone with a wider RPG experience.

Regarding the subject of this thread, I wouldn't put Deadfire in that category. The main character does change the power structure of the Deadfire and also convinces Eothas to do something that will have an effect on how people react to the breaking of the wheel. Either of those two things is more influence on the world than most people will have in a lifetime (in the Deadfire or in R/L).

  16. ...The British Navy would ply their crew with rum, they actually had a rum ration, ....

Yes, and the rum was important. They added lime juice to the rum to prevent scurvy. The rum/lime ration helped the British become a major sea power (and simultaneously became the basis for the umbrella drinks you could get at a 1970's tiki bar - innovation at its finest).

  17. At the end of PoE1 I could really rile up some of the gods. How much would importing such a save (or creating such a gamestate) impact the deadfire experience? If there is a noticeable impact, is it interesting? Is it worth a playthrough on its own?

I don't know about the others but Hylea really needs to grow the hell up.

(In answer to your question, I don't think I would do a whole playthrough just for that reason, but if you are inclined to play PoE1&2 anyway, it might be worth siding with/betraying some of the gods for flavor if it makes sense for the character you are playing).

  18.

Deadfire's plot is unique in that the entire thing would resolve the exact same way, even if your character doesn't participate!

I'm not arguing against your larger point, but Deadfire's plot is not unique in that way.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones could have stayed in the classroom and nothing would have changed (except that the ark would have been lost on an island instead of lost in a warehouse).

In 2001: A space Odyssey, David Bowman could have stayed on earth - he had no effect except to be reborn as a warning buoy to future visitors. Speaking of that, in the sequel, Dr. Floyd and the rest the crew that went looking for Bowman did nothing except learn what had happened (and, thereby, tell the audience).

In Deadfire, you are Indiana Bowman Floyd, you don't change what happened w.r.t. Eothas though you do change the regional power structure, so maybe you're Indiana Bowman Floyd of Arabia - if he were a pirate (yeah, this analogy is going well). Your job is to let people know what happened and warn them that they need to act.

    edit: typo
