  1. If this is the person I think you are talking about, I don't see how it is a good thing to not kill IT. It is a monster with no redeeming qualities that will down the line cost who knows how many human lives.

Keeping the creature alive I don't see as benevolent but more question of balance of natural order. Someone that cares not for individual life but greater picture of nature would not kill that creature.

It's still a sentient being. The Vithrack have an advanced civilization and are pretty okay with going out of the way of other races. You can't fault them for attacking when you encroach on their territory.

Considering the little birth races of the Vithrack and how other kith races just love going to war with each other... can't really blame them for not even trying to build communications.

And this Vithrack in particular was fighting for survival of their children. No "redeemable qualities" indeed.

I've read somewhere that the Throne Lady in your stronghold can also inform you of this quest, but I haven't verified this.

That's correct. And I have a strong suspicion that Gilded Vale folks give the Watcher heads up should he choose to revisit. (E.g. to rest at an inn while after some bounties.)

    3) If you make a very good case, some animancers get saved (by a member of the Dozens, no less), and they get to rebuild in the ending.

I have played Act 1 and 2 two times for that reason, but it seems like animancy can't really be saved.

Does one have to pass a certain amount of checks during the hearing to achieve this ending? Or are there other requisites for it?

  3. I was kind of torn between Berath, Wael and Hylea

I felt like my character thought that messing with souls was the absolute worst and I was eager to 'set things straight'. I went with Hylea though because my mind somehow picked out that poor woman in Ondra's Gift who lost her son because of her **** of a husband.

At least she got her little girl back. Worth it.

Yeah, she was the one I thought about too...

I still went with Berath, because Grieving Mother dissuaded me from choosing Hylea. I see that a lot of people here went with Berath, because Grieving Mother didn't like Hylea's option, haha.

    3) There's a rogue third level skill 'backstab' that works specifically off stealth.  It's good for instagibbing mages especially if you have an escape skill probably - I don't use rogues.  Because they're nerds.

    [...]

It's pretty gimp, actually, since Combat immediately breaks Stealth, and you don't want to initiate with a Rogue in the middle of a group of enemies. Yes, you could probably more or less insta-gib many mages and such, but the poor rogue would get instantly swarmed. It's very circumstantial at best, unfortunately.

Backstab works with ranged weapons too. So the rogue doesn't have to get that close enemies.

Many squishier enemies just died from my stealth kills with arquebus. If more than one enemy was aggroed, then my rogue ran back and let the tank pick up the mobs. Then phew phew from a more fortunate position. Worked like a charm.

  5. Did Eric or Carrie write the "flavor" exchanges between Eder and Aloth as you march around/progress? Because they are hilarious. Also, if you pick certain dialogue options in Aloth's Defiance quest, Eder's comments made me laugh enough that I had to reload to play it again.

All of the companion comments on Aloth's plight in Sanitarium made me laugh so hard. Everyone was sooooo "sympathethic"... you can literally feel the love.

  6. I think it's time to find out which companion people love the most!

No multiple votes allowed, because I want to make it difficult for you folks. :p

My personal favorite is Hiravias. He is irreverant, easy-going, gets angry easily, but always controls himself. Hiravias is very clever and his comments especially on gods were pretty much always on spot. He is very much a Glanfathan Orlan who calls Engwithans the Builders and he feels guilty about how many Engwithan ruins my party has desecrated... but he also is very rational and knows that this has to be done, for the greater sake.

Even worshipping Galawain Hiravias never forgets how dangerous such a god is. It's odd to see him almost grovel in front of Galawain, but on the other hand, Hiravias has a strong need for belonging. Even better to see how if you don't do his companion quest, then he just abandons all gods, because **** them. There is no sob story at the epilogue, Hiravias just goes off into the sunset with both middle fingers up. He's exploring the world on his own and gets along just fine.

Somewhat similar to the ending if you do the companion quest and make Hiravias worship Galawain: he returns to his tribe, kicks some butts and once everyone accepts him for being the cool druid Galawain chose himself... then Hiravias just leaves to explore the world on his own.

I like this combination of an independent streak and this need to be accepted.

Even his banter about sex things isn't as eye-roll worthy as I usually see in video games. Probably because he is not coy about it, just really passionate about sex things. Most of the comedy comes from how everyone is like... "oh God, I really didn't need to know that".

  7. As someone who plays these games for the story, a huge dungeon crawl has never appealed to me. But damn did I get wrapped up in the Endless Path.

    Yep, same.

Back when I first heard of Endless Paths I was like "hell no, I'm not even stepping a foot inside that place".

... 15 levels later, I wished there were more levels in there.

Absolutely unexpected. There was just so much lore and it was truly neat how every level kept surprising me. Especially the one with the Vithraak was cool! I was so surprised I could do quests for them. It really warmed my heart. I have a weak spot for all kinds of monster thingies and this part was my highlight of Endless Paths.

... no, scratch that, because then I met the Master Below and THAT was the highlight.

It was great to help her out and to have this great and terrible adra dragon be like "well, it's time to stretch my legs. see ya". She doesn't even go off conquering countries, she just wants to be off and discover all she has missed while living under Caed Nua. Good luck to her!

  8. I absolutely got my money's worth. Hell, even more.

I loved how you never knew which turns even the simplest sidequest will take. You can always make a choice and feel better for it. Many stories in the world really got to me, especially the one in Ondra's Gift where the mother sends you to find her son.

I loved the world and the lore of the world. I already knew a lot before the game (thanks to the Guidebook and wiki and backer updates), but seeing it in game was something else entirely. It's been a while I felt so at home with a fantasy setting.

I loved the conflict of faith of many companions in my party. They struggled with their beliefs, they yearned for redemption, for truth, for certainty. I love this type of inner conflict. Their endings were also rather interesting, especially if you don't do the companion quests (Hiravias' and Sagani's were in particular awesome... it just shows what kind of strong characters they are).

I loved the combat. I think now I understand the love for combat IWD and Baldur's Gate. There is so much you can try out, different parties, different positioning. Preparing before battle is really fun, scouting out, laying traps, considering who will stand where and cast which spell...

It's fun to run into a really challenging fight, it's fun to completely cheese it and it's also fun to have your abilities countered by your enemies.

I loved the skill checks, even when they provided only small details (hell, even especially then!).

I loved the music, it was incredibly... cozy? Comfortable? It was like putting on old sneakers and now you could run a mile in those and not even get tired. It's soothing, pretty and just right.

I loved the art of the game. I never thought isometric games to be pretty, but this one is just so full of colours and so sharp and the small details, like motes of light or butterflies flying around the scene really set the tone.

I loved the level design in the game. Especially Endless Paths of Caed Nua shined in this department. It was 15 levels long, but never felt old. Each level was unique and a pure joy to explore.

I have only three points of criticism for the game:

    1. Too little companion content (or at least it feels like it for me).

    2. Main story is underwhelming (especially the ending with Thaos).

    3. The stronghold mechanics were really shallow (but I'm confident the stronghold will be expanded upon in expansion and in PoE 2).

I have no doubts the next games will be even better than this one, have more content and more polish. After all, now they had to built a lot from the scratch. Next time they will be able to truly focus on content and not on the tools for it.

Considering my doubts before release, it's been a true relief for this game to alleviate my worries so profoundly.

  9. Have you used stuns? More specifically Repulsing Seal, level 2 priest ability?

Also, what about Mind Plague (cipher level 6 charm ability?).

If you took Binding Roots (an optional talent) on Sagani, then the fight should have been a piece of cake too.

I personally only abused the first to abilities (Repulsing Seal and Mind Plague) and that was how I dealt with all difficult encounters in the game. On the other hand, I wiped more often than you, so I had to try out more different abilities.
