  1.

I enjoy the game and I plan to replay it. I don't share your opinion about having 0 reasons to replay the game.

But... I agree the game feels average and combat is a bit meh.

I'll still give it 9/10, wanna know why? Because there wasn't a game this good for a long long time. My expectation have dropped to abyssmal levels and this game, as flawed as it is, is just what I wanted to play. And there is your answer. Yes BG was better, but since then expecation for this kind of games have dropped severely.

    Sad but true :(.

PoE is a solid game. That's it.

Less BUGs then many other games ... but still to many!

Can you imagin BMW or Toyota would release a new car where several parts aren't working as they should? Or a graphic card which has several BUGs?

ALL of you would instantly bring it back to the shop where you bought it!

I just can't understand, why users are so forgiving when it comes to software :(. It's a product like every other product! And creating software is in no way more complicate then crating a graphic card or car (hell, modern cars include billions of code lines too).

But all I ever see is this damn STUPID: "just a game" bull****!

Not a very good comparison IMHO, BMW and Toyota have the finances to keep at something until it IS right, Obsidian clearly want to get everything perfect, but they have limited means.

Also, a car is a single product being honed, whilst software can react so very differently on different machines, it's almost impossible to predict everything.

Also, bugs in a game aren't life or death, waiting a few days for a fix if it's disrupting is a relatively minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, first world problems and all that.

  2. Imho, EE versions allow for a better transition on modern widescreen pc systems without the need for numerous mods and that's it, but that's not the point of my earlier post. The point is that the games themselves underneath all that EE polish are still awesome and very much playable even to this day.

Absolutely. The games themselves are still awesome, whether the original editions or EE. The EE didn't add anything much at all, in my opinion, other than (as you say) being a little more modern PC friendly without the need for mods.

I'm sure part of it is nostalgia, but I think it's almost impossible to separate it out. Still, I'm absolutely loving PoE, and I think the combat and writing are awesome, can't wait to see where they go next!

The biggest enemy PoE has to face is our nostalgia of the IE games. Since (I guess) we're mainly older people that played these games when we were young it's really hard for a game 15 years later to beat the "wow" factor that BG1 gave us when we first played it back then.

As a player who played EE versions of BG series and IWD just recently I can tell you it's not nostalgia, they're just that bloody good and worthy of occasional replays. Still not sure about PoE replayability though.

Gotta say, wasn't impressed with the "EE" of the BG games. Just didnt think they were worth it, honestly. I liked Dorn though - thought he was awesome, Neera reminded me too much of Aerie (whiny and I dislike Wild Mages), and Raasad was eh...Although I actually did like the Black Pit - that would actually be great for trying out various build for PoE.... Didn't buy BG2EE though, just because I didn't think the new companions were worth it, although it wouldve been nice to actually have an evil thief (and have a full evil party of NPCs for once...). Just sucked they had so many liimitations and what not, just figured I'd save my money for this or Torment:Tides of Numenera.

I wasn't too impressed with them either, the UI Looked nicer, but wasn't really anymore useful. I love the UI in PoE, feels a nice compromise between modern and old school and is just minimal / extensive enough. The Enhanced Editions feel very clunky still, and I wasn't impressed at the quality of writing for the new quests and characters at all, I'm not holding my breath for the BG 1.5 they're supposed to be working on.

I hope they don't attempt a PS:T Enhanced Edition either, any additions they make will stick out like a sore thumb.

Still, making the games more appealing to a new audience is always good, so I'm glad they're doing them.

  4. But just how is this game a 10 when BG is better in these respects by far? What is BG then? An 11? 12? I am hard pressed to find any aspect where I think PoE is the better game. That doesn`t mean it`s bad. Just that some people seem to have lost all sense of proportion when it comes to PoE.

Part of the problem here is expecting all games to hold together by their review scores in comparison to other games. Should we be retroactively degrading games score as newer games come out (it was a 10 in 1998" which is a 5 in 2015?), or when new (better) games come out should we be upping the score limit? Games marked out of 12 this year, then up to 14 next year, etc, etc?

A good game that is enjoyed and feels worthwhile should be an 8 - 10, regardless of what score other games got now, in the past, or potential games in the future. You don't mark games by saying X got 7 so this gets more, etc.

  5. Title pretty much says it all. I'll be more specific here. I'm looking for a game that's like PoE (both graphically and in gameplay). I'd prefer it not be Fallout 1 or 2 since they are post-apocalyptic, even though they do have science fiction elements. I'd like something that's more in the realm of space opera or cyberpunk or just anything with a generally futuristic sci-fi feel to it.

If you could help me out that would be cool. If this genre doesn't have sci-fi games that's a damn shame, a lot of potential there.

    Thanks,

    Albion

I'd love an Infinity Engine / Pillars of Eternity-esque sci-fi game... eventually getting control of a ship, having a crew as your party... it'd be awesome.

Like Mass Effect, but with deeper plot and more character (and isometric!), I think it'd be great.

    Sadly, I can't help though, I don't know any sci-fi isometric RPG's.

There's Stasis, which is more of an adventure game, but looks very cool, it was Kickstarted last year I believe; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bischoff/stasis-2d-isometric-scifi-horror-adventure-game

  6. Just wondered if there's any moderation going on over at the Steam forums? I understand Obsidian are really REALLY busy this week, but there's some incredibly offensive and obnoxious posters over there...

Someone asked if there'd be any LGBT themes explored in Pillars of Eternity, which people seemed to take as a 'loaded question' and now that thread has ballooned to the largest post over there. Sadly it is 4/5ths trolling and bigotry, and now the forum is being filled with transphobic, homophobic and generally idiotic copycat threads by 0 level accounts.

Anyone able to help? Even if it's just closing the threads?

Funny that, I'm kind of the opposite. I always drop any "exclusive items" I get at the nearest rubbish bin and pretend they don't exist. Gonna do this for the space piglet and whatnot as well.

Don't... you might make some big bucks selling those to rabid fanboys who really want it all.

If it's a seperate code that is...

I believe they meant a metaphorical digital bin within the gameworld, rather than throwing them into a physical bin in the real world. I'm of the understanding that the items are automagically contained within the game generated by the unlock code / SKU.

  8. Facts matter to some people. If you make a strong claim, without evidence, and then claim that people are calling you a liar, then they're going to logically defend their point.

    • You claimed Backer's were promised early access to the game (with no proof).
    • Some people said you may have been confused with the Backer Beta.
    • You argued that people are 'bullying' you for making claims without any proof, then call the need for evidence unreasonable.
    • Someone linked a statement that the developers would have liked to have provided earlier access, but that it isn't technically possible.
    • The game launches in 21 hours anyway.

Nobodies been particularly unfriendly, other than yourself, I'd say.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the game once it launches. It's gonna be fun!

  9. Thank you axan 22, I wonder if these guys will be as quick to say sorry as they are to call me a liar one guy has even said hes checked all 200+ comments on kickstarter, the things people will do to try to discredit someone for no reason crazy.

The honus of proof is on yourself here, not on others to go and find evidence it WASN'T said.

There's only 21 hours until the game launches, so not long until we're all enjoying it anyway.

  10.

Hey, dude, they are far - far away from the something we can call final vision, aestetics or mood. This will be the role of the artists to hone all things up and to improve the mood... patience, my friend :)

How long can we use this excuse? Presumably they've been working on it for over a year plus outsourcing, yet a random forum post can show them up with 3 hours of work. These screenshots are bland, uninspired, and appear to have been thrown together in about 10 minutes playing in a world builder. I wouldn't be so quick to show off unfinished work like this over a year into production.

No offense, but updates lately have been sparse and extremely meh. Nothing impressive since the animated waterfall scene. Updates like this do more harm than good, but maybe I'm alone on that.

But on the bright side, Obsidian seems to have the full support of a loyal fanbase. Hard to go wrong if a few cut and pasted object clashing against a grass backdrop can generate dozens of "Beautiful! I'm dreaming! Looks like my ideal game!" comments.

The concept art is pretty cool.

As has been explained several times already, these areas haven't had their 'paint over' yet, which is one of the final passes that areas go through. Mazhlekov's post was pretty cool... but that's exactly the kind of work they're going to do... When they get to the final art pass! No point them doing that work now if they realise parts of the map have to be changed or moved to fit with a quest or for better gameplay flow, etc.

I understand the frustration, and I suspect these screens were selected as they're non-spoilery and just something to fill a quick apology email explaining no update this week... But, as explained, these areas aren't finished and haven't been painted over yet for the proper details.

  11. I agree that the Drake bones look too new, it looks like someone raided a museum and laid the bones out. As someone who grew up in rural areas it's not how bones deteriorate. Just google 'dead cow carcase' or some other animal and you'll see how bones deteriorate over time.

They'll add details of deterioration, cracks and mould and so on when they get to the paint over 'pass' of the art, which is one of the final stages. Don't worry, I'm sure they'll look less than pristine when we get there in game =)

  12. I've been rather unsuccessfully alternating between reading Neal Asher's 'Gridlinked' and a book about blogging, 'Blog Inc.' by Joy Deangdeelert Cho. I'm not making much progress on either, but they're both really good. I need to sit down on my next day off and tackle a chunk of one. Or both.

  13. I've been melting in the uncomfortable British summer heat... Seasonal warmth is so overrated.

What's wrong with the rain? It's cooling, refreshing, relaxing to hear it strumming against the window... *Sigh*

  14. It's looking promising... I suspect it'll be funded, not so sure about the stretch goals though.

It's a shame a lot of the bigger sandbox destructable city elements will be reliant on stretch goals apparantly, but there's always a chance they'll add it in an expansion or some-such. If they get the formula for the base game right, there's lots of ways they can expand this in future. Looking forward to it.

  15. My guess is that the fulfillment site will go live the same time as the video they are producing of the vertical slice... I suspect they'll be using that as a major marketing opportunity as it'll be featured on many gaming news sites. It'd make sense to allow people to upgrade and customise their pledges at the same time. I'm desperate to upgrade to a physical collectors edition copy as I really regret not pledging for that in the first place.

    Fingers crossed =)
