  1. So, as someone who hasn't had access to the beta, this is me trying to get information regarding the ship action in PoE 2.  I have attached a poll to facilitate that (get people's impressions), but I also have some specific questions.

For those of you who have played, what do you like most about it?  What do you like least about it?

Does it seem pretty polished and ready for launch?  Or does it seem like something which is going to take several months to work out to get to the point where it is really well-implemented?

Do you have any strategies which you can recommend to make it go more smoothly/make it easier?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!

  2.

Hopefully there will be an option to disable voice-over.

    Per reddit.

We will definitely allow you to turn off VO altogether.

Nice!  Thanks!  I really only like voice-acting for important characters and companions- beyond that, it just seems excessive and overkill.

I will say, that deciding to implement voice-acting on this scale is probably a net positive.  It means that the dialogues are probably a bit more realistic.  Rather than long walls of text, they are probably closer to what "real" people would say in a conversation.  Because if a voice actor gets the script and one of his/her bits takes 3 minutes to record... it is probably too long.  I guess we'll see "shortly"... or should I say, hear? ;)

  3.

Summons scale with char level, not PL. Please don't ask me why. :)

Are the final tally of things that don't scale: Summons, summoned weapons and ranger pets?

Please tell me that ranger animal companions scale with CL, not PL... Or, they don't scale at all? (pretty sure that is how it was in PoE 1, you just used those abilities to give them more hitpoints/attacks/skills/etc)

  4. That idea of the monk/cipher sounds really cool (the monk who gains focus from hurting others).  He could literally be feeding off their physical or psychic pain, being a sort of vampire.  As he does more physical harm, he builds up focus to attack them mentally as well.

Or, just a normal monk/cipher.  If you hurt him, you just build up his wounds so that he becomes more dangerous.  Once he does gain wounds, he unleashes his attacks, which he uses to gain focus and then finish you off.

  5. Oh Man! I somehow read cipher/rogue instead of cipher/ranger. I'm sorry!

Haha- no worries!  I just assumed that you were replying to someone else, though those builds do sound interesting.  Since I'm going to be continuing from my last playthrough, want to keep him a ranger, but I really like the idea of ranger/cipher (though the ranger/shifter sounds pretty sweet as well, just think that the ranger/cipher lends itself to more role play opportunities).

  6.

So, I tried to read through all the posts in this thread, but since I don't have the beta, am unsure of the names of specific multiclasses.

So, the short question: Has anyone played as a cipher/ranger?

If so, what specific build was it, and how did it work out in general?

    Thanks in advance!

In an earlier beta I had a sharpshooter/beguiler who dual wielded scepters. Had great penetration from scepter plus the sharpshooter boost, wounding shot is a full attack so it benefitted from dual wielding, you could start combat with phantom foes so everyone was flanked which got you past the beguiler issue of needing enemies to be sneak attackable.

You can target your pet for that line attack echo something, plus ciphers have a few ally buffs and heals which work on the pet.

    It worked pretty good.

Nice.  I was planning on sticking to warbow and dual-wielding rapier and stiletto for CQB, but what you just said here seems to indicate that should still work.  My plan was really to use my animal companion to set up the cipher attacks, and to use cipher abilities to "buff" my animal companion.  Don't know if I'm going to use sharpshooter, since it really sounds like that would gimp me in the event that I need to get close and fight in melee.

The good thing about scepters are there is no penalty for using them in melee so you never need to switch to anything else. Plus they are dual damage type.

Well, I didn't know that... That is pretty awesome.  I nonetheless don't really see a ranger as someone running around with scepters... but I'm definitely going to keep that in mind!

  7.

So, basically, slightly less power in each class, but more overall abilities, and probably fewer "weaknesses" of a single class.

I guess that the real question becomes if having more abilities is worth losing the access to high level skills and spells.  Since we don't really know what the difference between those 2/3s levels are versus the full ones (in terms of pure damage output, or likelihood of making a saving throw)... a bit difficult to say at this point.

The chart above is out of date.

Single classes now get an extra ability whenever they gain a new power level, so that's level 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16, and 19. Multis get an extra ability when they gain a power level but they need to spend them in each class, can't put them all in one.

So singles get 27 abilities plus first level and multis get 25 abilities plus first level and 6 of them must be in each class.

Its not a no brainer choice anymore to go multiclass, and that's a good thing.

I am a little confused here.  Are you actually saying that single class characters get MORE abilities than multiclass characters???  Because, that is how I read that...

Happy we returned to "normal" RPG attributes which are easier to understand and conceptualize.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Might is back in the latest beta - and it seems to be here to stay.

Haha.  Of course it is.  That's fine.  I understand how to use the PoE stats now... but I really don't see why they felt the need to completely redesign the wheel.  When 90% of cRPGs use a set of attributes that are easy to understand, why make up entirely new ones? Still waiting for the Kickstarter or Fig for Arcanum 2... I would literally pay $200 for that.  Maybe even $300... THAT was an example of attributes done correctly.

  11. Yeah, I finally went back and finished my 2nd playthrough of PoE, due to lack of any other games to play.  My first playthrough, didn't have the White March expansions.  Was hesitant to back PoE 2, because I quite frankly didn't love PoE when I first played it.

Still don't put it in my top 10, but it really looks like PoE 2 is going to better deliver on being a true spiritual successor to BG.  Looks like the setting is less grimdark, and more "fun".  A mix of locales and environments.  More party banter and inter-reactivity.  Finishing my 2nd playthrough of PoE over the weekend, I kept thinking about how my companions really didn't banter and didn't have much to say after getting to the White March.  In BG2 especially (and Kotor 2), loved the interparty banter.  I genuinely cared for my companions.  With PoE... meh.  I literally picked the companions which irritated me the least and that I found tolerable and balanced out my party well.  Had a love-hate relationship with Durance.  If it was reality, probably would have killed him, because he is just too fanatical and dangerous, and clearly disposed to doing all sorts of heinous things if he thinks it is necessary... or even maybe just because he thinks it might make Magran happy :/

I like the idea of how multi-classing will be handled.  That's the only reason I wish I could get access to the beta. To give a few short trial runs to see whether I want to continue as a single class ranger, or do a multiclass ranger cipher, like I'm thinking.  Plus, I want to see what my stats would look like as a ranger/cipher.  It looks like it will be a good build, that even makes sense.  I basically envision him as a mage hunter.  He uses his cipher abilities to augment his tracking and the abilities of his animal companion.  He primarily relies on his animal companion and psionic abilities to take down enemies. When things start to get hairy (or his animal companion has engaged his prey), he pulls his ace out of the hole, and unleashes a timely psionic attack that he has been building up for this precise moment.  He isn't about rough, sloppy fighting, but prefers to take down his enemies from a safe distance, but is completely willing to get close and carefully deliver some well placed stabs with his rapier and stiletto if necessary.

Guess I'll find out May 8th ;)  Watched a few videos on YouTube, and it looks pretty cool.  Wish we would be starting at level 4-5, not back at 1... but if the max level is really 20, then that means that at least we should be seeing some really new abilities.  The rebalancing looks pretty great.  Happy we returned to "normal" RPG attributes which are easier to understand and conceptualize.  One more month...

  12. Hello, so asking this here as well, since I haven't found a definitive answer elsewhere.

If I buy the pre-order now, but was NOT a Fig backer, will I still get access to the beta? DoS 2 did that, not sure if POE 2 will do the same.

Would really like to check out the character creation, but don't want to spend the money right now if I effectively will gain 0 access until May 8th (and won't be complaining about that, but there just isn't a point of buying it now if I can't do anything until the 8th of May).

Never mind.  Found the answer here: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/94318-welcome-to-the-deadfire-backer-beta/page-6

Looks like no character creation for me :(  Sad panda.

  13. So, since I'm not seeing the answer here... if I wasn't a Fig backer, but buy the pre-purchase now on Steam... can I still get access to the beta??

Or, has that ship sailed? ;) I would really like to just try out the character creation.

  14. I didn't really understand the connection between having the continuing damage and Predator's Sense.  The combination of those two is pretty substantial.  I got Persistence yesterday, and now see why having that continuous damage with a long duration is really helpful- I means that you have longer for your animal companion to do "enhanced" damage.  I guess that I need to get apprentice sneak attack, so that I can start combining that to really do damage from afar.

  15. Envenomed Strike is powerful if you a) have high MIG and INT, because those stats influence it's damage and b) if you use Predator's Sense.

Interrupting Blows can be nice if you already have high PER, but I don't consider it to be especially powerful if you're not planning your build around interrupts. You will get Stunning Shots at some point - which makes interrupts obsolete.

Thanks!  I'll look over there now.  That means that I need Predator's Sense, I guess.  My Might is high, though my Intelligence is only 12- is that way too low to make it worthwhile? And, is there an admin that can move this thread??

  16. What are they?

I've just recently begun playing again as a ranger, and I'm enjoying it.  I figured that I would primarily use him as a ranged fighter, diving in to the melee when necessary.  So far I've picked resilient companion, and interrupting blows, since those 2 abilities seem like absolute must haves.

Now, I'm trying to decide what to pick next.  For instance, the envenoming ability seems like it would be great, theoretically.  But, it only does 60 points of damage, and that is over 9 seconds.  9 seconds is a relatively long time, and 60 points of damage really isn't that much.  Does that increase with level?  Or, does it stay flat there?  If it scales with level, I could see that being really useful.  Sneak in, shoot them from across the screen, and run away.  If they pursue, they should already be substantially weakened by the time I bring them to my friends.  If they don't pursue, I can always sneak back and maybe take them out with a few more of those shots.

The 2 weapon fighting.  Should I get it?  It speeds up attack speed.  That could be useful.  Fast attacks with my good sword, super fast attacks with my awesome stiletto.  Or, is it really not that significant, the speed increase?

Are there any other pet abilities I should get for sure?  Or is it completely dependent on my play style.  I usually leave my pet behind with the party, close to the wizard to protect him as needed.

  17. Finally able to post here again... Yeah, so I just factory reinstalled everything.  My laptop was really good when I bought it, 4-5 years ago, and now it kinda "sucks" (comparatively speaking- it only has a 1gb dedicated video card, while I see new gaming rigs with 4gbs).  Because of that, when I was reading the Windows 10 64bit information, the motherboard and BIOS might not be able to run it... So, back to Windows 7.  I'm in the process of installing the game and all my drivers again, so I'll be playing later tonight.  That being said, I think it will be fine, because I am again seeing my 8gbs of RAM... which means that POE shouldn't destroy my memory again... since I technically only had 4gbs before.

    * So, the update.  Yes, that was exactly what needed to happen.  Ran if for several hours without any issues whatsoever.  I can't believe that Windows 10 put me on to a 32 operating system and I never realized that I was short 4gb of RAM...  So annoying to have to go through all of that, but at least now I know.
