  1. Yeah, would be interesting to see if they make a spiritual sequel in the future but PE won't be that, it'll be a combination of the big IE games which is a very different (although good) thing. And my first reaction on seeing the PE kickstarter with the setting and everything was that they had decided to let everyone do their thing which is very good for a company :). Hopefully there will be space in the future for a small PS:T like project but atm it will be very exciting to see how PE fares!

  2. The biggest change is **** PUBLISHERS. There are plenty of AAA game that benefit from publisher backing and huge marketing waves but it just feels good that there is a healthy alternative to selling your soul to a publisher for no profit or ownership of IP.

So publishers probably won't care super-much but developers who want to make niche games and actually earn real money might.

  3. This thread has descended into, and forgive my bluntness, a load of bollocks. At least the stuff about classes has.

OP here and I agree. I just want to clarify that this wasn't the point of my thread but rather how the updates didn't really go into the lore that much or that the goals didn't reflect it much either and I felt a need to voice my opinion, you'd be suprised at the people who sometimes are angry and never says anything because they've grown out of their rage pants and thus gives no feedback.

With the Ziets goal + lore coming I am happy. Unless the lore part is really sucky that is, but I doubt it :p.

  4. I am also holding out hope that while the setting seems very safe and bog-standard rpg-fantasy from everything we've heard*, this is mostly done to present a familiar basic structure around which they can build new ideas without scaring traditionally-minded people off.

This is what they have hinted at earlier but not really shown yet concretely how they will do, which is the worrying part. But the lore update is soon upon us, so we'll have to see then :).

  5. I have a friend who is convinced the game will be just a hack and slash action-game and almost withdrew his pledge. I just told him that he should trust Chris Avellone and that the game will be great. And I tried all the rational ways of explaning why the updates are all about the mechanics and all but it didn't sway him.

So that is why I signed up on the forum to rage about the lack of good updates on the story and vagueness of the games actual elements. It didn't really affect me as I'm a huge PS:T fanboy and enjoy dungeoncrawlers too but it really hit me seeing a person who love RPGs like Fallout and stuff be really put off by the updates and made me take the updates lack of motivation for our "niche audiance" more seriously. So I tried to voice my concern to see if Obsidian could release some info / goal that would quiet my doubting friend and hopefully pull in more :).

It's almost ironic how revealing more about your game "compared to DFA and Wasteland 2" can cause lots of problems and weird expectations in many and they demand to know more.

  6. on a different note, there's no need to be insulting. it doesn't do anything but irritate people. and that doesn't gain anyone anything.

You are right. Sorry. If anyone was offended by my rage post, I apologize. It was just that I read the new update and was very dissapointed and then I came to the forum and saw lots of people just writing it off. "They do what they have to do to get more money", no they are not, they are making bad assumptions about their userbase. We don't want pets or tacked on levels to a dungeon, we just want a solid good game and even hard as it may, they should create good stretch goals which really get you excited about the game and want to have in. But perhaps it's just me who thinks like that :).

Also wasteland 2 at 165? Seems pretty weird choice to me. Most want the cheapest "get the game" pledge so a 35-40 would've been more appropriate even though I think most RPG fans has already pledged for that game.

  7. Another sucky update. Guys, you guys suck too for sucking it.

I'm still excited for this game because it's probably just the PR guy being bananas. Seriously, why can't we just get information about the game and pledges that jumps the quality of the game in big increments?

Btw, don't defend ****ty tiers by saying "it does what it has to pull in money". We are gamers here, we want cool tiers that make a better game. Not a ****ing optional unfitting pet.

They should've just prepared this kickstarter better beforehand, might've gone way better, but hey, they made it atleast :).

  8. By 8 hours... you mean you want 8 hours of gameplay and/or story done before Kickstarter ends right? The other alternative is too crazy so it must be that.

No man, 8 hours full game. Or something along those lines. I've got lot's of other time consuming stuff to do besides gaming so I really appreciate being able to play stuff through. Is my expectations really off? How much do you want in scope? 200hr?

  9. I've got some stuff, I'll try to put it in priority:

1: A rough estimate on how the world will be built. Will there be focuse on a large and dynamic outer environments or will you travel between spots? Will everything be tied with the story and the world or will there be extra padding such as lots of extra enemies sprinkled in the dungeons just for fun variety or entire dungeons that feel nondescript?

2: Some writing decribing a place or people inside the game, perhaps even a character (but that might be too spoilerish)?

3: I'd love to see a mock-up of in-game stuff. Like a background and some characters or stuff.

4: Scope. Personally I'd love it if it was 8 hours. That is 8 really well made and packed 8 hours.

  10. I hate to be that guy and it's probably just the sepia-coloring, but i feel like these concept arts epitomize generic fantasy in the negative, unimaginative way. The pictures just feel bland. But like i said, i probably feel like that because of the lack of color. These aren't finished ideas yet anyway as far as i understand what concept art means. It would just be sad if the characters had great depth but lacked personality in appearance.

Agreed. But in a way. Blandness can also be good when combined with a good script, considering you get more focus on the actual person rather than strong visual elements that can easily give off the sense that it's just an entertaining design. I guess we'll see what spin it goes on.

  11. Nope. But perhaps I want to read one selcted preview sentance or anything. I'm fine with not revealing much, but I'm not fine with not getting anything and having only mechanics take the spotlight. Perhaps it's just in the nature of how they set up the pledges or what they feel comfortable talking about in the updates at this point. But you would kind of expect them to talk about stuff that get you excited rather than the opposite.

Who's this "you" that you're referring to?

I for one am quite excited by mechanics.

I'm talking about me. Sorry for using "you" as a reference to me. But isn't that how you talk? I know there is plenty of people who might go "YES GOD YES ELVES N DWARVES" or people who really want their player housings or paladins. I'm just saying that the current information has rubbed me the wrong way as a person who loved Torment over all the other IE games and are mostly looking for those parts in the new game. I'm not saying they should only please MY KIND, but atleast give us a sausage..

Also guy above who talks about revealing specifics is bad. Doesn't even have to be something specific. Tell me how the world could look, what kind of fidelity of the world are they thinking about? How well will the story be connected to actual gameplay? Will we have coookie dungeons with loots and bosses or will everything feel more connected and real with the world?

  12. oh I see what the problem is...you wanna read the last page of a book before the first is even written...gotcha.

Nope. But perhaps I want to read one selcted preview sentance or anything. 13. It sounds like a troll to me. Obsidian was very clear in what they were offering - a BG/IE style game. That's the reason why i forked my $140 for the project - ebcause it has dwarves and theya re promising a BG style game. There are plenty of non DnD games out there. Go play tyhem. hey, there is Wasteland 2 if you want it.

They did advertise it would have a good story like planescape torment. To me, the combat stuff will be fun, but is way on the sidelines for what I consider important to the game. All I want is just a good and interesting CRPG and I still believe in that they will deliver it. It was a blow to hear they where going to pick up the tired old fantasy formula but tbh it doesn't matter TOO much as you can do almost what you want with it, so it'll probably still be good.

My problem is not "jesus obsidian, what are you doing? This sucks? Give me Torment!" it is more "Get to only hear about rudimentary boring mechanics that don't mean nothing and have stretch goals that mostly just seem like extra filler that I'd rather be without and it makes me worried about the direction of the game because how they chose to interact with the pledgers".

  14. I voted no, not because I don't like the classes but more that I'd rather have them have the bare essential classes and focus more on fleshing them out and getting good specifics and stuff in game. The more classes you add the more you dilute the game. But I have no idea how they budget this so might not be such a big deal to get in the classes proper, but I'd much rather have one well made area than paladins.

  15. Next to nothing is known about the game. How can you be disappointed already?

In the information released with each update.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/10/04/kicking-it-old-school-the-peril-of-kickstarter-nostalgia/ This is kind of related to my feelings.

Obsidian have completely free hands. I'd love to hear something inspired instead of really long dungeons, crafting systems and classes here and there that we've already seen a thousand times.

Would be so nice to hear about some different places in the game or a certain people or whatever. Perhaps it's just me being bitchy but none of the updates so far has really made me more excited about the game but more of the opposite.

  16. Just to let you guys know. I AM relying on an Avellone factor :). And I do think the game can be good even with standard d&d stuff.

My point is that it is weird in how the updates feel, as they are devoid of anything interesting and also gives the impression that having barbarians in the game is something to be excited about.

But I'll just disregard all the vibes the updates give and still hold on to my pledge and look forward to the game :).
