Yah but those are cruise missiles, don't think the S-300 in ground attack's got that great a range - 85 km if I recall.

S-300VM had range of 200-250km and S-300 has range of 400km.

Most of Ukraine's S-300 are either S-300V variant which has range of 85km or S-300P which had 75km range

Fifth possibility: Twitter is hemorrhaging $4M a day and he did the right thing.

In 2021 Twitter made 5 billion dollars of ad revenue in couple weeks Elon has succeed to drop it less than billion dollars.

So cutting jobs could have been necessary to make Twitter profitable (as it made 200 million dollars loss 2021), but way Elon did it doesn't seem to be best way. But of course he may be able to convince advertiser come back, although some of biggest advertisers have declared that they will not advertise in Twitter or use Twitter ever after Twitter Blue impersonators were able to crash their stock price with fake announcements. So Elon may have difficult time ahead. But he already made SpaceX buy ads from Twitter with hefty sum, so he at least I'd able to fund Twitter with his other companies, although their other owners may not like such actions.

More rumors that US would seek to freeze the conflict if Ukraine retakes Kherson.
Strategically it makes some sense as it would secure Odessa and I bet they don't expect more Ukrainian gains.

How they hope to stop Russia from launching another invasion is a complete mystery.

Invasions need resources, which Russia seems to lack currently and building said resources under heavy economical sanctions isn't that easy when your industry heavily relies on imports.

But after tomorrow there is high likely hood that US help to Ukraine will decrease lot, as Republicans with candidates that either support Russia or are against helping Ukraine will most likely take control over the senate.

  4. Here is non-computer translated English version

    https://news.yahoo.com/butusov-says-russian-claims-ukraine-170400235.html

It seem that attack occurred in August. Ukraine was able to do successful counter offensive in Kharkiv after the breach, so it maybe that Ukraine's surprise re planning of their counter offence was because of this data breach.

Russia seems to have published data about their attack just to spread doubt in Ukraine troops and increase morale of their own troops

What you and  Gorth is saying is interesting but I want to clarify something. In SA we have universities that are also state funded, most are. But we also have private sector funded universities. But even in the state funded universities you have to pay for your degree unless you can qualify for NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid System ) but this only  applies to students whose parents dont earn much money

So in Nordic countries is all university access free? And then when you say " State only owns percentage of stocks in several companies" that means they minority shareholders but is it  still tax payers money that pays for this minority shareholding?

What is the reason the state owns stocks in private sector companies? Is it a standard percentage of shares across all private sector companies like 20%?

Im not criticizing this model because it  clearly works but its interesting. In SA we have the PIC (public investment corporation) that invests the government employees  pension funds and they own shares worth  about 14-18% of the total  SA listed companies but it varies from company to company and our PIC  is considered a normal pension fund  investment company but its public sector owned. So maybe thats the same as the Finland model of government owning stocks, is that what you mean?

In Finland universities are free for Finnish and EU/ETA decree students. Universities started to collect tuition from students outside of EU/ETA in 2017. If you have not enrolled in university you can still study university course through so called Open University, but then courses cost 15€/study point (26.67h worth of estimated work)

It depends on company, usually they want representative in company board because of strategic significance of company. In not so strategically important companies they just own stocks through investment funds, to increase state income.

For example state owns over 50% of shares in Finland's largest energy company Fortum, and closer to 40% in Finland's largest fuel company Neste, to ensure that they are able to give their opinions how those companies operate. State also owns big share of Finnish postal  company Posti and Finland's largest railway company VR. EU rules put limits on what companies states can fully own and control, which is why Finland privatized most of state owned companies in 1990s when it seek membership in EU.

Pension companies in Finland are mostly private mutual insurance companies (so they are owned by their customers)

Do you guys have privately owned universities in Finland, or are the universities all state funded and controlled? And is it  the same with your hospitals. Does everyone have free access to your hospitals or do you have to have medical aid

The reason I ask is I consider the Nordic countries to be a successful hybrid of socialism and Capitalism but it depends on what the definition of socialism is. On Codex someone said to me that the Nordic countries are not socialist, they have social programs?

My definition of socialism is the textbook definition

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism

"Socialism is a left-wing[1] economic philosophy and movement encompassing a range of economic systems characterized by the dominance of social ownership[2] of the means of production[3][4] as opposed to private ownership.[5][6][4] As a term, it describes the economic, political and social theories and movements associated with the implementation of such systems "

So  if all the hospitals and education is state controlled in Finland  and not in the private sector thats socialism to me. And it clearly works and is successful yet Finland also has  a vibrant and successful private sector which is why I call it a hybrid of socialism and Capitalism

Is that accurate for Finland, do you consider Finland to be socialist and Capitalist?

All of the universities are private, which get state funding equal to private capital they are able to rise. In past it was depend on how many people graduated from university in year.

Finland is capitalist, where even fundamental services like electric grid and postal service are privately owned. State only owns percentage of stocks in several companies, but can't directly control even companies which it owns majority of shares.

Although cities own several companies which they have direct control over. And cities fund public health care and schools. Although in end of this year public health moves to be funded by state.

Police is state funded, as is military and border guard.

Paul Pelosi, husband of Nancy Pelosi, in hospital after being attacked at home

Paul Pelosi, husband of the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, was taken to hospital early on Friday after he was attacked at the couple’s home in California with a hammer by an assailant who was reported to have shouted “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”

San Francisco police said that they were called to the Pelosi house in the city on a “wellbeing check” at about 2.27am local time on Friday morning. They found an adult male confronting Paul Pelosi, and a hammer was being grasped by both men.

“The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody,” said Bill Scott, chief of the San Francisco police department.

Scott named the suspect as David DePape, 42, adding that any motive was still being determined. Charges are to be brought at the San Francisco county jail, including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and other felonies.

It was reported by CNN that the suspect intended to tie the victim up “until Nancy got home” and that he had posted rightwing and conspiracy theories online, including content promoting the lie that Donald Trump was deprived of victory in the 2020 election because of voter fraud.

Why dont you like  platforms they allow freedom of speech? We cant control the extreme comments from  either the left or right but we  dont have be part of it which I can guarantee you no one on this forum is. But to shut down these mediums is worse than than the extreme comments IMO?

Considering that platforms are private businesses so they can't themselves hinder freedom of speech as freedom of speech is concept where government right to limit people's speech has been limited by constitution.

It is private business freedom of speech to moderate their platform as they see fit, platform users don't have freedom of speech rights against private platform owners, they only have obligation to follow platform's terms of service.

Yes I agree but the point is the ships are idle because  of logistics problems like limited capacity to serve ships or storage capacity

But your post suggested the ships are idle because they can make more money waiting to sell on future market. But they not idle because they holding back on purpose to make more money. They idle because of capacity to serve ships?

They are idle because they get more money in future, because there are limited capacity to serve them, which is why gas buyers are able to pick sellers who sell gas in lower price just to get their ship free to other deliveries. But some sellers sell their gas to future markets even though it is already in ship close to LNG terminal where they will deliver it, because they have calculated that they will make more profit that way.

So limited LNG terminal capacity has caused situation on gas market where there are more supply than demand and sellers are looking ways to ensure that they don't need to dumb (as spot prices went below zero) their gas just to free their ships for more profitable shipments by making their ships as floating storages waiting months where there are much more demand because energy companies are willing to pay more (126% more than last October, so about 240€/MWh) for guarantee that they will not run out of gas during winter months.

Yes but if there is no  storage capacity then ships also have to sit idle. So lets not promote  " evil, greedy, Capitalist companies " conspiracy theories

Thats the reason ships are sitting idle

Stored gas is constantly used so there are constantly room for that amount gas that was used. But LNG ports have limited capacity to serve ships which has lead to situation where there are ships which contents are sold to be used in January and February next year because price was higher on future market than it is currently in exchange. So companies decided that their ships will act as storage and idle in ports until is is time to unload their tanks instead of competing of limited LNG port capacity

About millennium ago European nations were able to defend against invasions from east and south by more advanced nations, which lead era where European nations focused big sunk of their resources to develop more advanced warfare, which lead about 500 years later in era where European nations started compete against each other on discovering 'new lands', which they were able to conquer with relative ease with their new armament and we still live age where people descending from those European nations have advantage in warfare they use.

Tangential but an amusing bit of entitlement -

Funny thing is that currently Iran gets almost automatic place in World Cup from Asian Qualifiers because how few Asian countries are able to run high level football league, but even though Iran has been in World Cup now 6 (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022) times it has been able only to win two matches, one against USA (1998) and one against Morocco (2018).

Ukraine has had hard time to qualify from European qualifiers, as they have qualified only once (2006), then they advanced to knock out state where they advanced in Quarter finale where they lost to Italy, which won cup that year.

But as how qualifiers are done in World Cup, Iran isn't able to take place from Ukraine or vice versa.

World Cup is mainly just Germany vs Italy vs Brazil (as they have won 13 of 21 cups) and others are there just make it look like it is world wide event 😋

The missiles are almost certainly aimed at infrastructure, but because the aim is poor, they end up being more terror strikes than anything else. Terror strike in the literal sense, i.e. causing terror in Ukrainians. With a smallish number of casualties, too.

Casualties aren't massive, because there are alarms and people hide in shelters.

Poor aim does not explain why missiles hit tens of kilometers away from any civilian infrastructure. Even if you make assumption that Russian's targeting systems are ****, you still would hit closer to the target.

  16. 3 minutes ago, Darkpriest said:

And how many casualties are reported? I think less than in your average carbombing?

As for infrastructure, you might check your news again. Even @pmp10posted targets hit here

In Kiev alone there are over two dozen dead in one location.

I mean Russia shot over 80 missiles and less than dozen hit in infrastructure. Either they are absolute incompetent or they didn't target infrastructure

I'm fairly sure it is more aimed to actually kill the infraatructure, like electricity, heating, waterpumps etc. Maybe also road structure in big cities. Given the past experiences, it is possible some of the offshots were either deflections from air defense strikes or just a poor aim. The number of casualties does not indicate a 'civilian terror killing'. If they would aim for that, they would hit apartmebt buildings.

As most missiles that weren't shot down by air defense didn't hit electricity, heating, waterpumps etc., but parks, busy streets etc. I would say that you are wrong in your assessment

  18. Both Ukraine and Russia are able to lose 300k men if they are willing.

Ukraine has population over 41 million people and Russia has population of over 144 million people.

For example during WW2, Finland lost about 100k men from population of 3.3 million.

Soviet union lost over 27 million men from population of 170 million.

Question is about how many men their governments are willing to sacrifice for millimeter of land gained.

  19. 21 minutes ago, BruceVC said:

But going back to your post, whats your definition of being Nazi?

That is the difficult question as there is no simple definition of being Nazi, as it is ideology that consist of social, economical and political views.

But if person views include racial purity, supporting political alternative for capitalism and socialism, opposing liberal democracy, disdain towards minority groups especially in form that minorities are threat to said person livelihood and way to live. And if person uses 'science' to prove their superiority. Then you can be pretty sure that you are dealing with person that would have been at home in Nazi Germany.
