  1. I don't like the art style either, but the environments, etc. is a lot less WOWy than the characters and the game can look pretty nice in places.

The real core of the game is the fact that there is a combination of ridiculous levels of detailed world interaction / manipulation, sheer number of NPCs to talk to, unorthodox quest solutions using your skills and items, things to see and do and craft, that recalls Ultima 7  as well as other golden age RPGs in a way very few games do today.

    More or less this.

But I don't have an issue with the art style so much as I have a problem with all the female portraits being freckled gingers with goth-levels of eyeshadow. Damn soulless gingers. At least I got my male Cleric rocking an afro and a handlebar moustache. That alone takes the game into solid 8/10 territory.

Currently the female Wayfarer is disguised as a barrel and stealing paintings from an artist's stall in a marketplace because the rooster the artist is painting was rude.

  2. Imagine, if you will, Civilization, but instead of just building junk in one city then moving on, you need to micromanage everything.

This is good... how, exactly? Does the president or prime minister of any nation personally order around every citizen (and non-citizen)? Civilization is a 4x game, it's not a micromanagement of a single settlement game. Apples are apples, oranges are oranges.

  3. There's always a beta, except when devs don't use typical software development lingo. Whether or not you get to pay to be an unpaid QA non-employee is up in the air. Seems like it's becoming a trend, lately. Personally, I don't want to play an unfinished game until it's finished.

  4. People constantly leave places behind completely in reality. Some people move out of their podunk dying country town to the big city and never go back; some people are born in the big city and finally get the chance to start a ranch in the middle of nowhere, whose nearest settlement is the aforementioned podunk dying country town.

Video games are fundamentally limited in scope; they cannot depict every aspect of a world in a constantly changing state unless they are fundamentally simple or abstract.

  5. Some of you may ask "But random guy who just made his second post, isn't PE just too young for us to start? We just don't know enough about the world!", or perhaps, the primeval, "Your thread sucks!"

I was honestly just going to ignore this based on the tl;dr, but you're self-aware of what you're doing so now we're in a whole other ballgame.

I will make every character of every sex, race and class. Rolling characters is my methamphetamine. I will not be satisfied. Ever.

  6. ...so sometime this fall/winter, GM & I's gonna try ta arrange a bit o' a "reuinon" fer the ol' BIS boards o'er at the Redux ( http://s6.zetaboards.com/MistressLair_Redux/index/ )...details be a bit lite right now as we speaks, but I's'll update as we goes...any ol' Islander that be interested, come on down an' if ya stays in touch wit' any other ol' Islander, invite 'em as well...I's'll keep this thread as updated as I can...so c'mon, lads & lasses; help us's git the Band back together...

    ...WHO LUVS YA, BABY!!...

"reuinon"? You deserve props for keeping up that weird faux-****ney pro-wrestler dialect with excessive periods (you know you shouldn't be starting sentences/paragraphs with ellipses, right? What is it that you're omitting?) on internet forums, but really? Come on. Normally it's "live and let live" for me, but this is egregious due to the pronunciation. Once you spell it that way it sounds like some kind of dry heave, as though you just stumbled on a corpse washed up on a riverbank after a week of floating.

  7. Just as an aside, Popeye's = better-than-kayeffsee deep-fried chicken. JUST. SAYIN'. I get enough **** for being the whitey who likes Popeye's over KFC, at least give me this.

  8. Crashing at a friends house in Beaumont tonight, then going to a party in San Antonio tomorrow. The hangover will be a hitch, but I'm pretty sure it will be worth it.

Will it? That's a stupid question, coming from one of ludicrous Éire heritage. The state of drunkenness is always superior to the state of sobriety.

  9.

Metro: Last Light and Divinity: Original Sin on and off courtesy of GabeN. Actually really impressed with LL, not so much with Divinity (if I wanted to talk to myself with poorly written lines and rock, paper, scissors I could drink excessive amounts of alcohol and do it on my own. Even with a second player, the lines don't stop being garbage as far as writing goes.)

Not a fan of the rock, paper. scissors mini-game either and an option to disable it and just roll the dice (as it used to be earlier in beta) was requested by a bunch of people (including yours truly). The dialogues very early in are a tad cheesy I'll admit, it usually does get better later in the game though if their earlier games are anything to go by. Of course if Larian's sense of humour doesn't appeal to you you're out of luck I guess.

Generally speaking, I play RPGs for their existence as RPGs, rather than an attempt at "parodying" RPGs. The latter is the best sense I get out of D:OS' "inter-protagonist" dialogue. The writing simply isn't good to me. That's really all there is for me to say prior to the game going "gold." If the writing were better and not so ham-fisted it would be more enjoyable. It's entirely plausible to make a "meta" RPG parody without making it so painfully obvious that you're trying to (if it's obvious and not amusing, you have failed at your goal.) I guess that's more an issue with my opinion of the quality of writing than anything else, though.

In other news, Metro: Last Light is continuing to outweigh Oby's (psuedo?)slavic trolling and provide a brilliant experience that leads me to want to take Russian language classes.

  10. I gave super many ****s about the Copa del Mondo when I was at a family reunion when my BFF cousin was in attendance (because she gives many ****s,) this time, not so much. I have always had one expectation: America will lose (the REAL America, not Brasil or whatever, you don't count, guys. Join the Union and call yourselves slums instead of favelas and maybe we can talk.)

  11. Here's a French woman (former French first lady Carla Bruni) speaking English (skip to the 4 minute mark) without trying to "sound French": https

I'll admit it likely is not quite as dreamy sounding for foreigners as Leliana's acted French accent.

Amazing, you've managed to prove scientifically that there is only a single "correct" French accent for spoken English. A French actress speaking English in a game world where French doesn't even exist so it's actually irrelevant is simply faking it, obviously. You should have a PhD in linguistics for this remarkable discovery.

  12. Got my last paycheck. Unemployment begins July 1st.

Been trying my luck at the stock market. Made around $1900 in ten dayd. That's not much less than I used to do while working. I know it's risky, but I will keep doing this until I know if I am going with studies or until I find new work.

It's only risky if you take risks. There are plenty of safe investments, like water. When is the value of water going to decrease? Never. That's not rhetorical. The answer is "never." A risky investment usually doesn't pay off, and you really have to be in contact with the right people at the right time to be able to get in on the ground floor when it comes to your googles and facebooks and such. If you're studying, try studying CS and math so you can write yourself some good trading algorithms.

  13. inb4 deleted and redirected to Bethesda's forums.

NV ultimate edition is currently $11.99 on Steam. that's about 10% of what you would have paid for the game at launch and all the individual DLC when they were released. If you're not playing on PC, well... What are you even doing?

  14. How do you feel about location abandonment? It is something that happens to early access areas, that you visit in a open-world game (most notably sandbox, but not only), and for the rest of the game you have no true purpose to visit them again. I mean, why bother?

How many of you backtracked to Goodsprings or Primm in Fallout: New Vegas?

What business you had to revisit the people of Nashkel in Baldur's Gate?

These locations are fine and well written, but after you leave them behind, there is no sense in coming back. Ever. Vendors and shops are not adequate to your level, quests are long gone, NPC's haven't got anything new to say...

Is it a good thing, a bad thing, or more of a don't-give-a-crap thing?

Why should there be any call for backtracking to minor places simply because they are minor? Shouldn't any/every bandit encampment have at least 3 high level quests tied to it even after cleaning it out at level 2? Your logic, not mine. A video game is a video game, not a realistic simulation of a universe. They can't produce a sentient, self-aware AI for every NPC (or any NPC for that mnatter,) and allow you to type in any possible dialogue such that you can play with it like you're on a star trek holodeck.

Have you ever gone on a road trip? Why didn't you stop to set down roots in every podunk little dying post-agrarian town you passed through on your way to your destination (if you have been on a road trip)?

  15. RPgs will better off without those losers. I don't mind romances (because they tend to add solid C&C and hot babes)

Bold emphasis my own for reasons that should be clear given the following:

You know 99.999% of humanity now considers you one of "those losers" thanks to that statement?

there is a dorian thread at bsn, but it appears that it very quickly turned into a gay-romance thread, so we kinda lost interest in reading further than page five of 240+.

    HA! Good Fun!

A gay romance thread? On BSN? About a douche with a fauxhawk? NO. ****ING. WAY.

Lesson to be learned: Don't be a ****ing ****, get a real mohawk or just carry a sign saying "I will gladly take anything up the ass you have on offer."
