    flat-out FALSE

Ive been making multiple characters with completely different skillsets and playing them for about 6-10 hours each:  they do NOT even have close to the same gameplay.

And thats only dealing with the generic point allocations in the first area with limited customization that we know opens up more later.

looks like you just inadvertantly told many of us that you dont know how to make different and diverse characters in an rpg

    well-done

Yet I've been able to do that in most RPGs I've played. This is just flat out a mediocre RPG. Full stop. No clauses. Cry about that if you want but it's true and being reflected by many users that aren't blinded by the hopes and dreams that obsidian will make some kind of come back.

    QFT.

Some people are more interested in "beating" the game instead of actually experiencing it.

In other words they miss the whole point, i.e. it's the journey that matters, not the destination.

It was over before I even knew it. I wasn't looking to beat the game, just going with the natural progression of the story. I do that on first playthroughs as it's nonsensical to run off and do a bunch of random side quests that have nothing to do with the main quest when there's a sense of urgency. Wasn't that a main complaint people made of Fallout 4? Why am I doing all this side **** when looking for my son? Well, why am I doing all this side **** while trying to save the colony?

Some of you guys will make literally any excuse to cover the fact that it's a short story.

frankly metacritic is a terrible place to judge based on user reviews average as people miss score things like the one below

    0review.png

Okay that's actually pretty hilarious though lol quite obviously not done to purposely change the score like the one I posted. I agree that it all needs to be taken with a grain of salt but many people do take that as a gauge. Hell, obsidian themselves were offered a bonus based on how NV would do. But I'm sure you knew that

@xzar_monty : sounds like you're purely an HD graphic player who needs high fidelity graphics to become vested in a video game.  Is it fair to say you'd probably hate GTA San Andreas because of it's dated 3rd gen graphics? And prefer GTA V over GTA SA because GTA V has superior, pretty HD graphics (an non existent character development and short story) compared to past GTA games?

Then what you said is 100% right. Deep RPGs like New Vegas are definitely not for you. Seriously, why did you even bother creating an account just to post that?

Sounds like Fallout 76 would be a better fit for you. Or better yet, you should go check out Star Citizen.....🤣

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Once again, you try to paint people in some portrayal based on nothing. GTA V wasn't even shorter than SA lol and how on Earth could you say it didn't have any character development??

New Vegas isn't a deep RPG and neither is TOW. You're full of **** lol but I'm sure you'll have some cop out statement saying I like multiplayer games instead right? You're a clown

This is not completely true.  A skill has to reach 50 before you can specialize in it, but since each skill is affected by different attributes they each start at a different level of competency.  Once one skill in the group hits 50 then you can immediately start specializing that skill.  It almost sounds like you did not pick your attributes that favor the skills you want to specialize in.  Like picking dexterity instead of intelligence, which would make you sneak start higher than your hacking skills.

I know how it works and my example was just that, an example. I picked my attributes fine to dump the stuff I didn't want, but even then the stuff I did want was not exactly how I would have liked the numbers. And like I said, even if you don't want a skill at all, you'll have to level it with the one you do want until that hits 50. Dodge and Block for example. I like Dodge but have no use for Block.

    smarter than in fnv

at least stealth kill whole camp are almost impossible

Completely disagree. Nothing about the enemy or companion AI is smart. Plenty of times where they've positioned themselves behind cover but did so incorrectly and were wide out in the open.

*Loud automatic gunfire happens while killing marauders*

*Marauders twenty feet away are completely unalerted and casual*

Just makes you feel like you're playing a platformer and going room by room killing them and they had no idea you were in the previous room. It's embarrassingly bad

  7. Not sure if you just aren't looking hard enough or really want this game to be perfect. There's plenty of wonky physics and graphical errors. Go into TTD while someone is sitting, minding their business and shoot them. You'll watch them instantly twitch to a standing position to start shooting you. I've got a screenshot of someone that bounced up into the sky hundreds of feet while I shot him with a light assault rifle. This site won't allow over 1mb upload (lmao) so I can't post it

Whether you like it or not, the way your skills and character evolves in-game is actually the most accurate and realistic I've ever seen to date.

Because you can't be the best in everything, you've got to specialize. Like in real life. Being able to talk your way out of some situation requires very special skills, and so does being able to hack high security computers, or steal from people without them noticing.

You can take any example, weapons, science, it works the same in real life. Someone who's good with guns will also know some things about how to use rifles or other weapons, because they have common mechanics and requirements.

Dialogue skills also make sense. If you're very good to talk with people and convince them, you could lie, or say the truth, or even threaten them, it would work, because they really believe in your words.

I'm sure you're a fan of skyrim and this kind of rpgs, which allow you to be a badass in everything, and be the most powerful mage / warrior / thief / crafter / swordsmith / jeweler etc altogether, but it's totally unrealistic and the opposite of fun to me. You can't be the best in everything, no matter how hard you'd try and want it.

Everyone has domains of predilection, like different kind of things. And you don't become a master of combat, hack, science or anything else in a day.

Well you're "sure" I'm a fan of Skyrim and being a badass at everything huh? Incredibly wrong there lol I want a flawed and imperfect character. My problem with TOW is that all my characters have felt mediocre at everything and not really flawed at anything, besides the couple dump skill groups. Nothing about the skill groups is realistic. It's a lazy and poorly thought out system that's getting absolutely mangled in reviews.

Ahhhh, well, yes for the subset of skills you want to be good at and are middling at. It still makes sense though, if you're naturally great with sciences, but want to be an engineer you might do really well at Medicine but you're really after that Engineering. You get told repeatedly that your handwriting is illegible, so you must be a doctor or lawyer "when you grow up" and yet you want to pump liquids and air into frakking systems and pneumatic drives, you live for the day your robot can move about by itself. To hell with medicine, I want advanced knowledge of Engineering. So, despite having 100s in biology and similar sciences you have to work for your engineering degree, it takes effort and you sometimes make poor grades.

All of it, to me, seems pretty realistic and human. YMMV.

I mean, hey, if it works for you that's great. It's extremely poor and lazy to me. Half of it doesn't make sense in any realistic world. Most professions and skill sets aren't generic enough to cross industries.

The skill groups will be one of the first things I mod when the opportunity arises. I'd prefer much more control over my character. So far, they've all felt the same

Do I... have to post an image of my skill tree? Okay. You're mistaken, it happens.

    skills.jpg

Poor wording on my part. You must still raise the whole group at once until the skill you want to raise above 50, hits 50. So if you rolled a 22 in Hacking and 30 in Sneak, you are still levelling sneak to 50 if you want to raise your hacking passed 50.

You still had to raise Lie and Intimidate to 40 for Persuade to hit 50. That's the issue I have. Right now I have a 0 in block and 10 in Dodge, if I want to raise Dodge to 50, I'm raising block to 40 as well. Neither really have anything to do with each other besides being "defense". Really, one would be agility the other strength

  11. 5 minutes ago, Clawdius_Talonious said:

All of it makes sense, what makes less sense honestly is the idea that I could be the world's greatest liar but I can't convince people of the truth, I could be the world's foremost fencer but if you gave me a greatsword my brain would turn to goo and drip out of my ear. That's common in RPGs, but it's damned silly, and I like the way the skills are handled in The Outer Worlds.

Your examples here are actually incredibly realistic and human. Most people either have a hard time convincing someone of a lie, or the truth. And a world class fencer would be capable but not overly qualified with a greatsword. Connor McGregor showed us something similar a couple years ago. Specialisation is termed that for a reason.

And you're partly right about not having to level the skills you don't want up to 50, but if you want to raise the skill you want above 50, all the other skills in that group have to be 50 first. Again, broadstroking your character into a generic one.

If you want to raise hacking over 50, Sneak must reach 50 before you can take Hacking any higher. I would have loved to get some Dodge perks in there but have no use for Block. Likewise with Heavy Guns. The game is just forcing me to level skills I don't want in order to make a character I do want.

Someone needs to get further in the game.  At the beginning the skill checks are really low and easy.  However, later on there are lots of locks and hacks I've been locked out of due to only having 50-60 skill points.  Once you get to 50 you really do have to specialize .  I will say that science/engineering/the other one are a waste of points so far.  Would be nice if they were more common.  I feel like people tend to compare this to "other games" without actually giving examples of games that do it better.

Completely disagree and I've probably got one of the higher amount of hours into the game on this forum (working from home and not being busy helps). I've been messing around with multiple playthroughs and they're all feeling the same. Others have echoed that same complaint. If you need a comparison, why not their own game, New Vegas? You could assign points to individual skills based on how you wanted your character to progress. Right now, I'm forced to level skills I don't want up to 50 due to this stupid skill group bull****. It's a terribly basic system and I'm shocked people think that's a good RPG mechanic.

The game has been out less than a week. Have you done nothing else in this time? Don't you have a job to go to? People to see? Exercise? Things to do?

It's a pretty short game. Doesn't take much to get through it. I played the first two days while working from home and finished at just under 17 hours. The main quest was about 12 hours long.

The plot and the setting are very suburb and I'm not sure what you're looking for in mechanics seeing as how I had a blast tinkering with the right combination of skills and attributes.

It's almost like you want a PnP RPG.

I liked the setting and the plot, although I do feel that the main quest itself is rushed and short, it was enjoyable.

The skills however, just ended up feeling mostly the same as there was always something I wanted in one group, but didn't care about the other skills in that group. This leads to getting most of the groups to at least 50 before you can make a character feel unique. I just wanted individual skills to attribute points to. That in itself would have mostly remedied my complaints with skills. I'm sure this will be fixed with mods but as is, vanilla skill levelling is too streamlined and generic for me

Releasing something on PC with its historical piracy problem and not releasing on PS4 is completely counterproductive revenue-wise. 80% of TOW console sales on PS 4.

MS lost exclusivity war in previous gen and now all bets are on multi-platform coverage.

A correction here at least. 82% of PHYSICAL sales for TOW were on PS4. I'm sure Gamepass affected xbox/pc sales but that 82% was not including digital, and I can't tell you the last time I purchased a physical game.

Being a Microsoft Studio, it's a guarantee future Obsidian games will be Microsoft exclusives.

I've completed 18 quests in total I think. 26 hours as I said. I honestly don't know how I could do it faster. Unless I skipped all the dialogue and showed 0 interest in its actual RPG systems.

I get so sidetracked on exploring when off on a quest. What's impressive is even stuff that has no bearing on quests is entirely fleshed out. You actually feel like a world around you is going about itself.

Are we playing the same game? The same ultra basic RPG mechanics and details game?......
