Have you gone to talk to Kreia first? I think that you have to go talk to Kreia, and then come back and talk to Atton, and then you should be able to use the map...
-
Isn't that what the veil is, in effect? Perhaps you just want really good clips to keep it in place when it gets jostled.

I've got nothing against romances in games. I just think games really need to figure out where they're going. Are they trying to be an epic adventure or a bad dating sim. Games like Persona 3 don't bother me because they're quite explicitly about social connections, not just romantic. You can become friends with tons of people all over the game. Games like KOTOR are awkward because it's like you can only develop a personal relationship with romantic interests and it seems like the only reason you can even do that is because "people like romances (read: sex)."
I think priorities need to be established and the systems better designed. Adding characters simply for romance purposes seems kind of silly when the game isn't about romance.
I will agree with you in some ways... but KOTOR is much more trying to be an epic movie in game form where the choices you make impact the outcome somewhat. Epic movies almost always include romance on some level. It may not work out, it might just be flirtation, but it's there. The romance works in the first one because of the redemption theme. It works in the 2nd because the exile is supposed to be weaving these incredibly strong connections with all of her team members and influencing their behaviors. How would that not get a little romantic, even if just one sided.
Now, when it comes to the third, if they don't want to include any romance at all, I would mostly be ok with that, as long as they were tying up the story nicely. However, us girls like romance. And quite honestly, if they're going to put the half naked chicks in for the guys, they can at least put in a little romance for us. Especially since we got cheated on the last two.
Oh, and I would be ok with that included romance having horrible negative impact on the story line... mostly...

I always swing by Korriban right after Carth hears about Dustil, but I don't leave the academy. I save the valley of the dark lords for after the Leviathan. Then it all goes by pretty quick.
Also, your daughter plays KotOR? That's pretty sweet.
My son LOVES video games (he's 4), but he can't really read, so that limits him to shooters and such. But my daughter isn't really interested in this sort of thing...
My daughter is 11 and she loves video games in general. She's not quite as into them (or Star Wars) as my 8 yr old son is, but they've both started their own KOTOR 1&2 games and played quite a bit of them. They've also watched me play K2 repeatedly, so I think that's where a lot of the interest comes in for my daughter. And while my kids can read, that doesn't mean that I'm not constantly getting the "now where am I supposed to go?" questions... ugh, those drive me nuts... lol.

I'll agree with you on K1, but I completely disagree on TSL. Yes, you're right the Atris story doesn't make nearly as much sense. But you do get Kavar, which has a lot of interesting implications and I honestly love the Sion connection. It's very interesting and I didn't think it came out of nowhere. It comes from the same place all the other connections do. And I believe that the force bond connections with everyone work much, much better with a female exile than a male.
I will agree that Mical doesn't add much, but I would like to think that he could have if they'd known how to write him better... or given him a different accent.

I can't be the only one getting tired of the constant ego pandering romances. It's a bit silly that in every adventure a main character has to come across 3 or 4 people who want to sleep with him. Avoiding gay relationships isn't simply about denying choices, but it's also statistically sound! In my 25... or is it 26, fudge I need to look at a calander, years I've only met one gay guy who wanted to sleep with me! (I think he was drunk, and creepy, but it was my fault for going to that particular bar) It's not that common of an occurance.
It's kind of like all those old kiddy cartoons like the Extreme Ghostbusters where there has to be an african american, an asian or hispanic, a woman, and someone in a wheelchair. Only now people are demanding it for their sex fantasies.
I demand cross-racial romances! I want a black woman, an asian, a hispanic, and a nice Russian woman (love the accent, rowr). And all at the same time! And a romance with a parapalegic, because it's time to demonstrate the socially acceptable nature of the handicapable! It's time to rebel and break down the walls of conformity!
PS: You should watch Torchwood. Davies made it a point for the first season to feature every major character in a same sex encounter. The characters don't draw gender lines in that regard. Especially Jack. He'll sleep with anything, "so long as it's beautiful."
Bravo! Thank you for voicing so well what I was thinking.
I do think that having multiple romance options would be nice, but ONLY if by pursuing one you completely lock out the others... for that game, at least... :D

Manaan has always been my favorite.
never thought i'd see the day...
Manaan was really not that bad - and the court case was kind of fun.
My daughter's currently playing K1 and I looked over the other day and was struck by how beautiful Manaan was. But I remember thinking it was booooring. But probably a lot of that impression had to do with the fact that I went there after the Leviathan and really wanted to get onto the end of the story, so the last star map was just tedious.

I'm not really sure there's a disagreement between the two, really... In any religion, adherence to non-dogma related guildlines swings drastically from strict adherence to almost none. It's a natural way of things. Religious leaders see the problems that one particular issue is causing and start preaching against it. Those trying to live by the guidelines generally over correct which causes problems the other way, which makes the rules more lax again. It's a giant pendulum.
But then, maybe I'm trying to get too real with it and taking it too far... I do that sometimes...

The odd thing is that I find it *much* easier to play dark side as a male. Not that I've ever finished a dark side game, but I've made it a hell of a lot further with my male exile than my female. For one thing, the females get so damned UGLY when they start to go darkside... it's really disturbing. But probably it's just that I don't identify with the main character quite as much so I can go ahead and say all those horribly out of character (for me) evil things.

I can't say I really have a favorite place from K1... if anything Korriban. But K2 is easy. Nar Shaddaa and Dxun have a very definite magic about them. I think Dxun is so great because of the sound effects... I absolutely love thunderstorms... so it's such a great atmosphere. But Nar Shaddaa is a little less clear... maybe it's just because so much happens there?
-
I can't really vote because I've played K2 with both male and female, (though I prefer female) and I'm currently playing through K1 as a male for the first time. I can say I already like Bastila better. So it could be I prefer playing K1 as male in the long run. But then, Carth is just so much fun to tease...

Ok, you make a lot of good points. Non-violent is especially not the word to use considering her implied excessive use of stun cuffs and bothan stunners. So, she doesn't like to use lethal force. I'm not exactly sure what the most precise word would be for that, but ah well.
I'll let you not like her I guess, but The Architect called her boring. She may grate on your nerves, I guess (though I still don't get it), but she isn't boring.
Also, you might want to really think about the phrasing of the following quote, especially the parts in bold:
It was the constant "ooh, you're my bounty" comments that made me wanted to force a lightsaber down her throat repeatedly... and I play LS. At least the game could have let me tell her to stop doing that, but oh no - "because Mira's so perky and got so much spunk -You know... if you read that quote the right way, it really just sounds like sexual tension. Perhaps you should rethink your feelings towards her and come to terms with something?

Hey, we've gotta have something to gab about, right?
Well, I think so... yes... lol
Edit to add:... why else are things like marriage outlawed...Because Jedi rules are lame. If I had to abide by all that, I'd probably prefer to follow the Sith, too. Or maybe not. I like Jolee's philosophy.
And my thought on the marriage thing...
Why (in practice) did the Catholic church keep their clergy from marrying? Because inheritance laws trumped church ownership and diverted the efforts of the priest doing church work or providing for his family.
Similarly, the Jedi order has a vested interest in keeping their knights and masters single.
1. It's really hard to take children away from their parents to be indoctrinated at an early age if your order supports "family" ties.
2. Jedi are a lot like superheros in that they don't have many vulnerabilities, give them family (especially children) and they're suddenly much more vulnerable to fear - not for themselves but to others. Fear, more than any other emotion, leads to the darkside.
3. Jedi work is highly demanding. It's best not to have the workers distracted by silly things like having their own life.
All of those are very good reasons, but it's still not a very realistic expectation and probably overall causes more problems than it prevents.
/oh crap, I did it again, didn't i?

Sorry, the Bastila diversion was my fault... and probably the Juhani too...
I'll try to behave now...
-
One of the best things about Mira, honestly, is that you can turn her into a Jedi as soon as you get her. I always go to Nar Shaddaa first, and before I leave, Atton, Mira and Bao are all Jedi. Then zip over to Dantooine and pick up Disciple who can also be turned in the matter of a few conversations, and voila, you have a full crew. True, there's not room in your party for all of them, but I guess I'm always swapping them out constantly. My 3 favs for my party being Atton, Bao or Mira. I'll keep Kreia with me at first just for another healer, but I ditch her as soon as Atton turns... and of course, I've not leveled him since I got him so he becomes a pretty decent little Jedi right off the bat.
Oh, and I have seen Mary Tyler Moore... it's been 25 years (at least), but I've seen it!

This sums it up, especially the highlighted part.
She was an egocentric bitch, so I stopped listening to her.
Mira's attitude is even worse at times, though. She's supposed to play this tough young woman character, but shows way too much cleavage to take serious in that regard. At least Handmaiden does it because she likes the exile. In Handmaiden's case, I could at least care about her issues. Mira just bit my head off for no particular reason, at which point I stopped caring what her problem was. Perky kid? Try overconfident and self-important... Her constant bragging about me being "her bounty" was not "fun", just annoying...For no particular reason?? You killed her family! You destroyed her clan! Yet in spite of being raised by Mandalorians she is a non-violent person who would rather find people than kill them. She couldn't even let the wookiee who was trying to kill her die. Furthermore, she's the only one who implies that there's something going on between you and your romantic interest. She's always picking on Atton when he starts getting jealous and she is just plain fun.
But maybe all that works better if you're female and you're not trying to hit on her.
Ok, *deep breath* sorry... I'll try to stop ranting now. I have to admit that I probably didn't really care all that much about her when I was playing the games (at least the first times) but when I was looking for story ideas she was so full of potential. I had great fun with it!

I like Visas, but mostly it's because she is so mysterious, and frankly, once you've talked to her thoroughly, and usually in one long conversation, she has nothing to say afterwards. Since I don't want to be accused of liking women to be silent, I'll have to rank Kreia higher just for that reason alone
Visas is my favourite character in TSL for that reason, actually.
Nah for me it's easily Kreia with Visas, T3, HK and Atton rounding up my top 5, although I like all the characters except for Mira and the Disciple who just bored me, but I couldn't bring myself not to like Mandalore in K2 because we all know the "cool" factor Canderous has.
Mira bores you?
How is that even possible? She's got so much spunk, she's the single most observant person you get in your party and she looks great while doing it. Now, I completely get Di being boring, boring, boring, but Mira? No way. You probably just didnt like being told you were too old...
-
I actually like G0-T0 quite a bit in theory and have used him as the antagonist in one of the fics I've written. In all honesty, he has a pretty fascinating back story, or at least it could be... as a party member, however, he sucks. He really doesn't add anything at all to the party if you have Mira. And I always have Mira. :D

Of course it matters. They're still humanoid and, including Juhani's case, mammalian. The parts probably line up.
Damn it, I hate when people argue affectively with me. It leaves me feeling so unfulfilled. You're right, the attraction is to the physique, not the gender.
*sigh*
-
Ok, I'm rofl...
I've always thought that Juhani being a lesbian is rather a silly idea... I mean, really, once you stop having sex with your own species, does it really matter what the sex is of the person you're having it with?
Anyhow, I never can resist saying the hutt line to Bastila and she gets just as pissy everytime. The girl seriously needs to lighten up!
/*waves her cootie infested hand at Tale* I'm not touching youuuuuu!

Since you're running on Vista have you tried the fixes listed here http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showtopic=48748 ?
I know it was crashing for me before I replaced the .dll file mentioned in that thread. But that seemed to have fixed it.
Good Luck!

That's good! Though it does make me very curious just what they are working on then and how those rumors got started...
And it also makes me sad that once again, no one is working on K3. *sigh* Well, at least we can be glad they're not messing it up!

Was your first play through as a male character? I think if it had been for me, I wouldn't have ever developed the dislike I have for her because she warms up *SO* much more quickly. So if you play as a female after already liking her, you probably don't find her so annoying.
But honestly, I don't think I willingly talked to her after Taris on my first game.
-
Of course, if you're playing as a female, why would you *want* to talk Bastila down? I absolutely could NOT stand her. All you ever get is nag, nag, nag, nag. I recently started playing a male game for the first time and was so completely shocked when Bastila ended up being kinda likeable. She softens up sooooooo much and so fast compared to when you're a female.
Maybe the men developers just don't know how to write friendly female interactions or something.
How do you play KOTOR I & II?

Ok, I've been thinking long and hard for a good response to this question and I haven't really come up with one. Maybe brdavs is right, maybe it's just a stereotypical thing, but it just seems *much* more plausible to me. I guess I can't imagine a male exile really being able to hold that crew together. The women would be cat fighting and the men wouldn't really give a ****. But it probably has a lot to do with the way I interpret the character as much as anything.
Honestly, I didn't like Handmaiden much, or Atris at all. That's probably because they didn't fit into my interpretation of the whole story once I'd played through female. And I really missed the Kavar and Sion interactions when I played male.
