  1. I've attached the pictures below.

I know graphics aren't the main focus on an Obsidian game, but in order to gain immersion, the graphics should at least match the tone of the game it is associated with.

The world of Eora has been depicted as dark and gritty, but the recent Avowed trailer doesn't showcase such tone.

I am not really digging the cartoony graphics in this new game. It's feels like a far cry compared to the reveal trailer. Even POE 1 & 2 had more gritty and realistic graphics compared to this.

    What do y'all think?

  2. Finally able to shed some light on the whole Avowed reboot ordeal. Jez Corden (notable Xbox podcaster) stated in his podcast (link below) that initially Obsidian felt like they needed to reach Bethesda level of features for Avowed (by adding additional stuff like 4-player coop) because they wanted to impress Microsoft. However, they later realized that they're a much smaller studio compared to Bethesda's massive workforce and had to curtail their ambitious plans.

Jez later clarified that Obsidian actually changed the direction of the game's development by focusing only on features that they're familiar with (such as deeper RPG mechanics and branching storylines). They're basically aiming to make Avowed a drastically enhanced version of the Outer Worlds. If you ask me, this seems like a positive direction for the game's development. Fingers crossed...

Recently, Jason Schreier (notable games journalist) stated the quote in screenshot 1 claiming Avowed's development is going through some rough patches. He also posted the tweet on screenshot 2, but recently deleted his post. it seems he was correct in his claims regarding Avowed not showcasing in this year's Xbox Games Showcase. What are your thoughts on this?

  4. The first arcanum game was published by Sierra, which was eventually purchased by Activision. And now Activision, along with the Arcanum IP is now owned by Microsoft. The first Arcanum game was created by Obsidian employees Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky who were still part of Troika games at the time. Now that the Arcanum IP is under the Microsoft umbrella, do you think a new Arcanum game is possible with Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky at the helm?

I really doubt that Microsoft (who now owns Obsidian and therefore also the Pillars IP) would allow a Kickstarter campaign for PoE3.

The first hurdle for a PoE3: the devs must be willing to do it. After the release of Deadfire and the low sales numbers the mood was pretty gloomy.
But as I already wrote: several devs now came forth on Twitter and said they would be on board for a PoE3.
Maybe Josh Sawyer still wouldn't be willing to direct it (too bad), but as things like Beast of Winter shows: other devs can step in and still deliver a really nice RPG experience. Imo BoW was excellent and Josh Sawyer wasn't involved that much.

Then Microsoft would need to approve it and fund the development. As I said above they want a big portfolio - all kinds of different games - for the Game Pass program. Not all those games don't have to appeal to millions of players - as long as they don't burn money it's a win I guess. Deadfire could have been a lot cheaper if it didn't have Full VO and some quicksand-features like ship combat. And yet it broke even half a year ago or so (so it wasn't a commercial failure after all). Microsoft bought Obsidian in order to have more RPG expertise. Deadfire wasn't a huge financial success but broke even after all. Even such games can be a benefit for Game Pass.

So while it still seems unlikely that we will see a PoE3 in the near future - mainly because Obsidian still really doesn't know what went wrong with Deadfire and seems hesitant to retry - it seems less unlikely than a year ago.

You're right on the money! We've already seen what Obsidian's capable of doing. Grounded was developed by just fourteen developers, FOURTEEN!!!! And that was a big, open-world survival game. If they're able to do that, then they can sure as hell develop POE 3 with much less effort

It wasn't.  Fallout 1-2 fanboys were so staking hope on the premise that newcomers playing Fallout 3 would somehow play the originals and turn into.... Fallout 1-2 fanboys like them.  Never happened.   Those who did -by and large- simply didn't care for it.

The dead horse theory is still alive and well it seems.

Well circumstances are different now. Josh stated that Pillars III will happen only if they're excited to make it, and they don't require any external validation for development to happen.

    Source: https://gamingbolt.com/pillars-of-eternity-3-will-happen-only-if-obsidian-are-excited-about-making-it-says-series-director

Currently they're burned out after making Pillars I and II, but give it time and they'll be inclined to return to the franchise once again. Now that Obsidian is owned by Microsoft, you have to understand that they're not creating games in the pursuit of sales, they're making games with the viewpoint of diversifying gamepass, which is Microsoft's main focus. Gamepass already has a diverse array of games which is attracting gamers of all genres. Games like Pillars is quite rare since it's such a niche genre, but if Microsoft is trying to attract all types of gamers into gamepass, then they'll definitely allow Obsidian to make Pillars III in hopes of attracting the audience of isometric rpgs. Obsidian possesses the tools and the finances to create Pillars III, so they already have a head start. I'm not saying it's guaranteed, but never say never.

  7. For my take, the reason why Deadfire sold poorly is due its lack of marketing.

DOS II generated its crowdfunding from kickstarter, the most prominent crowdfunding platform in the world. This allowed the game to generate a wider exposure to the gaming community. On top of that, the turn-based system in the game appealed to a wider array of gamers.

Kingmaker was able to attain success due to the fact that the Pathfinder franchise was already famous, and this game provided a long return to the beloved franchise.

Sadly, Deadfire hosted it's crowdfunding in fig.co, a platform that is unknown to a majority of gamers. The Pillars franchise is also fairly new, so it doesn't hold the same pedigree as Pathfinder, and the RTWP system is off-putting to a lot of people.

However, with Microsoft's endless pockets of money and Elder Scrolls' hiatus, I truly believe Avowed can achieve the success it deserves. It'll probably even encourage some gamers to try out Pillars I and II similar to how the Witcher Netflix adaptation caused the Witcher 3 to increase in sales. That might just encourage Obsidian to make a Pillars III.

I just hope to see attractive companions (and romanceable)

Most developers have a terrible tendency to make companions with awful designs, ugly men or ugly women 🙄

Obsidian is located in California, which is the social justice capital of USA. Don't expect beautiful, straight, feminine looking women anytime soon. Just look at the women in TOW

  9. What if Obsidian continues their cancelled Aliens RPG? The game was said to be a horror version of Mass Effect.

    Source: https://www.gameinformer.com/2019/04/16/obsidians-cancelled-aliens-rpg-was-aiming-to-be-a-horror-mass-effect

This isn't the only time Obsidian decided to continue one of their cancelled projects. They were once working on a RPG called Stormlands for Microsoft back in 2013. But in the end, Microsoft decided to pull the plug and Stormlands was cancelled.

    Source: https://mspoweruser.com/stormlands-obsidians-cancelled-xbox-one-exclusive/

Obsidian then decided to develop a new game using Stormlands' scrapped assets and Paradox's funding, and they were able to create a fantastic little RPG called Tyranny. If they choose to follow the same pattern, I think Obsidian may be able to develop a fantastic Aliens RPG.

  10. Well, ever since they joined Microsoft, gamepass certainly opened a lot of doors for them. They don't have to create streamlined ARPGs with the intent of selling millions of copies. Since their main objective is to diversify gamepass' library in order to attract more people into the platform, they can create niche, isometric RPGs without the fear of going bankrupt. So it's entirely possible that another isometric CRPG is currently being developed over at the studio. I'm highly confident that Obsidian is planning on releasing a third installment to the Pillars franchise.

  11.

As many have already pointed out every time a comment like this comes up, obsidian probably didn't have a say in this. From the adverting it seems they were under the impression it would be on Steam and not be an epic exclusive.

Maybe they should choose their partners better and actually communicate with them regarding decisions also affecting them.

Thats one upside with Microsoft. Its set for the future.

You've got a lot more confidence in Microsoft than I do. They've cancelled a number of games over the last few years and were one of the leaders in trying to force anti-consumer features onto gamers during the XB1 launch. Some of us have not forgotten their history.

Yeah, but back then the executives who controlled the the Microsoft games division were different (that idiot Don Mattrick comes to mind). Now, that helm is driven by Phil Spencer and he's taking Microsoft games into a more favorable path

Welp, all my hype for TOW just went down the sitter. CD Projekt Red is the only company I can trust now. CDPR, if you're reading this, please don't follow the same path as Private Division with Cyberpunk! T.T

How do you feel about GOG.com exclusives?

I'm actually okay with GOG exclusivity since GOG is a secure platform, unlike the Epic Store which is a spyware for the Chinese

  13. I don't think it was Obsidian's decision to make TOW Epic Store exclusive. Private Division is the one that's pulling all the strings. If you're gonna blame anyone, then blame Private Division/Take-Two. I'm not entirely surprised that this happened since Take-Two executives are a bunch of out-of-touch, hypocritical, greedy individuals who only cares about monetary gains. It's sad that Obsidian didn't have any say in this exclusivity decision.

  14. Bought all Obsidian games w/ their respective expansion packs from day-1 because I trusted the talented developer with all my heart. However, this exclusivity deal is a new low for Obsidian. I know it was Private Division's decision to make TOW Epic store exclusive, but I refuse to support this kind of anti-consumer behavior. I'm sorry Obsidian, but TOW is a no-buy for me. Yarr-Harr matey! My eyes are on crackwatch now.
