By contrast, Deadfire's critical path does not work on its own. It is short, uninteresting and repetitive. Without spoiling anything, imagine if BG2 had ended at Spellhold; Deadfire feels like it ends at the halfway point of the story.

JE Sawyer has mentioned this was a function of basically overreacting to player/critical feedback from PoE1, wherein the critical path seemed too long, and the final act especially too long. So they course-corrected by focusing more on faction and side quests, and making the final area extremely short. He's acknowledged that they probably went too far in this direction, given the response to Deadfire's critical path.

one thing i'm noticing is that at least two thirds to three quarters of the criticism seems to be about changes they made due to criticism from the first game which says a lot about the internet and how productive discourse is hard to come by

it is very unfortunate that anyone thinks this has to do with sales or that sales are a reflection of quality in the first place

    -crowded field for limited demo

-fashionable shade on real time with pause

    -weak marketing strategy

  2. why do so many people think sales indicates that theres something wrong with the game?

also one of the most sacred cows of rpgs is final fantasy so this stuff about "traditional fantasy" not selling is a huge laugh tbh but it is why the western canon of the genre is so unimaginitive and dreary. i wish pillars didnt even have elves dwarves or any of that borrowed tolkien/norse lore im tired of it

the market suddenly got crowded since poe1 and critics and social media started a fashionable sneer about pausable real time a mechanic that ironicaly only exists because the fashionable sneer was against turn based in the 90s

  3. a very small percentage of this games audience finds it easy like 60 percent on steam didnt even get the boat fixed. bunch of dudes on a board whining that potd with scaling is too easy is uh not a good cross section.

i also like how quickly people use sales figures to justfy why their pet peeve about the game is the reason for failure. a critically overrated first game that met significant voluminous and seemingly coordinated backlash well after release, a very saturated nostalgia crpg market banking on aging gamers who often have a lot more going on with their lives than when baldurs gate came out, and the suddenly fashionable sneering about real time with pause being unplayable are the most likely culprits.

afaik it only bombed their unrealistic expectations and sold about as well as its peers. i havent played any of them namely because they all seem so incredibly flawed. other than dos2 but the writing in the 1st one was bad as hell. also that reddit thread is speculative. they still want to do a ppg so couldnt have cratered that hard

  4. i dont understand why these games get such dedicated haters writing missives of two thousand plus words that come down to superficial nitpicking about setting ("pirates geez how cliche" what rpg has pirates?), the mechanics not being their preference, or not exactly replicating their adolescent experience with baldurs gate. considering this guys ranting abot "hypersexualized gay" characters my suspicion that most of it is crypto-political trolling seems to be pertinent

Berath's Blessings are the rewards you receive for attaining achievements. A sort of "New Game +" option that allows you to start the game with special advantages (explored world map, gold, exp, equipment, etc.).

They are not meant to be used on your first playthrough, so make sure you finish the game at least once before worrying about Berath's Blessings! :sorcerer:

Thanks for the explanation. I have absolutely no idea how I was otherwise supposed to understand this based on the patch notes.

    maybe google "beraths blessings" someday

  6. at the same time its potentially one of the coolest challenges in the game, reminds me of hardcore mode on new vegas. but right now it feels almost like you would have to grab as much food as possible and hope for the best instead of actually managing anything and most of the big food items seems like they would be wasted since they last a day. theres not really a whole lot of uses for salt in this game and introducing like salted meat & fruit recipes for this challenge would be really neat. the nuts already shouldn't expire, and the ale should last longer than lager.

its like abydons because thats very much like new vegas to me, i would use guns until they jammed if my character didnt do repairs, throw it out, i have lots. i love doing that on here.

  7. Please don't call someone troll because you have different thoughts.

i think its more about how confrontational his tone is which, if you were wondering, is what makes a troll a troll

Beyond just macho swagger I don't understand why people feel the need to trash games for being WAY TOO EASY BRO when I'd say about 95% of the people who play this game find it plenty challenging. So you've mastered it. Move on, do something else. Stop acting like its the game's fault. I'd love to see a chess master moan about how easy chess is.
