  1. Some jerk at the Codex posted an article that asks "Are the paradigms of role-playing outdated?"

This may seem a weird notion; yet, games outside the genre seem to offer more appetizing variations on traditional play mechanics of computer role-playing games. It would be easy to attribute this feeling to how the barriers of genre definitions are eroding in favour of more sandbox experiences or how the lack of a formal, universal definition that accurately characterizes the genre and its play mechanics lead many to take the genre at face value. But is this the whole story? Why do some people hold the Thief series above role-playing games when it comes to presenting stealth mechanics, and why do developers like Jeff Vogel seem to have been swept away by the concept of character progression in action titles?

Could it be that the role-playing paradigm is becoming outdated by better alternatives? And if so, what alternatives could we look at?

    Read on for more!

  2. In the thread at QT3, Green later implied that it wasn't something all that exciting.

Huh. I really do forget that some people outside my mom read my blog. So somebody guessed right on this thread. The answer lies within. And I wouldn't even be cagey about it (cuz honestly it's not the kind of OMFG news that warrants such behavior) if the publisher making it would just freakin' announce it already. And BTW a great many of the guesses here are things I would *totally* love to see.....but the truth is a bit more mundane....

Honestly, the main point of that blog post was just to plug James Mielke's 8 page StarCraft 2 story in the July issue.

That makes me doubt it's something like the eventual X-Com announcement.

  3. Same here. I even pre-ordered it. The main page says April 16th, but it's pretty quiet there. I'm wondering if it will really come out. I never saw a gone gold notice.

According to someone at the ET forum, one of the developers said that the final build was sent to the publisher on the 10th.

UFO was given to publishers today. They,ll need a week to test it and some

    time to manufacture DVD .

    Best,Michal

  4. Retired gun runner Feargus Urquhart recently had a little chat with the kids at RPG Codex.

    13) When looking at the current crop of games in the market, is there any game that catches your attention? Do you look at any recent release, CRPG or otherwise, and feel that Obsidian should try doing something like it?

I'm really looking forward to playing STALKER

We've got a review up of Warhammer: Dawn of War (that's right, the original game w/o the expansions).

Now while it's true that you can upgrade units with certain weapons to be more effective against vehicles versus infantry or infantry versus vehicles, none of the upgrades appear to have anything more than a marginal affect. Like turrets, they *just* help you win by a little bit but if he has more units than you, don't even bother. Okay, okay, while the game's maybe not quite as bad as I might make out, the unit balance is atrocious. You're either walking all over your enemy without a care in the world or he's walking all over you. There is no inbetween. There are no close battles which you recover from to then push the enemy back and claim glorious victory. If you lose the first battle, you've lost the war. That's it. Game over.

Word of warning: it was written by a Starcraft fanboy.

    Read it here.

  7. New interview at NMA.

Ratty: Another interesting and novel skill is Disguise. How does it work, exactly?

Vince: It's a combination of looking like someone else (wearing certain clothes or displaying a certain ring) and knowing what to say (researching the background of such a person).

Let's say that you need to pass through a guarded gate. You chat with the guard and with the townsfolk, and if you have proper skills you may learn that a courier from another town is expected. Asking further and collecting gossips, you may find out more about the town the courier is from (if you haven't been there yet), about the reasons for the visit, about the faction he represents, etc. Then you make yourself look like a courier on an important business and boldly go in, weaving a web of bull**** and confusion. While you will use Persuasion and Charisma to collect the info, you will rely on Disguise to put it all together and act like someone else in a convincing manner, without sweating and giving anyone a reason to suspect you.

  8. You could find both games cheaper if didn't mind digging around store shelves (I got Disciples II Gold for $4.99), but they're easily worth the $30 regardless. Hours and hours of fun guaranteed.

Disciples II is especially recommended for HoMM fans.
