    I prefer FUBAR myself.

I don't hear F-bombs a lot in games, but when I do my wife points it out to me.  Honestly I miss it most of the time ... which is kinda sad really as I don't talk like that in RL at all.  I agree though that in some situations it fits.  If a man is being torn in half by some creature, and he's not a minister, a few colorful words may come out of his mouth (along with a lot of blood).  But when everything in the game has to use F*** as an adjective, adverb, etc. it's a little much (movie Wolf of Wall Street comes to mind).  Granted I understand some people actually talk like that, but I would also never want to be around someone that does.  Being able to avoid them in a game would be nice since it really isn't necessary.

I'm quite curious if your wife doesn't point it out for you when you get a critical strike on an enemy and his body is cut in pieces tumbling across the screen, or when you use one of your character's necromantic/demonic powers to raise zombies/demons to do your bidding, or simply go Dirty Harry on everyone you encounter deciding who should live and who shouldn't. Because really, the double morality on this topic is astonishing.

I said something similar in a previous post, but it feels like for some people being a video-game gives them charte blanque to commit all manner of sociopath and homicidal deeds without really minding it, but man, spelling out a well fitting "f***" now and then, that's clearly stepping over the line.

Well she doesn't sit and watch me game as that would bore her to death.  But she can hear.  I use headphones when I can, but my son's new kitten ... well that didn't end well ... for the headphones.

The biggest double standard I've had in games is that you can murder at will but flash a tit and it's suddenly a Mature game.  Though I'll admit NA games are starting to get a little better about this.

EDIT:  After reviewing the ESRB description it almost looks like they added the word just to get an M rating.  About everything else could have been T.

Not so much that I have to have romances, it's their reasons for not having it that make me hesitate.  If they don't want to be bothered with having to be creative and write a romance, what chance is there that they put much effort into the NPC's at all.  That kind of pulled the game way back for me.  The NPC's are one of my favorite parts of BG and similar games.

Man this 'no romances' nonsense is just off the hook. These people have written some of the best PCs in history are you freaking kidding me? Man Chris Avellone makes a few self-deprecating jokes and rumor mill just goes insane. Obsidian cares obsessively and deeply about their PCs.

Then I would say the fault is with Chris for what he said, not on others for how they took it.  Chris has done nothing to make anyone think any differently and acts too arrogant to be bothered with it.  Not the kind of person I want to throw money at.

I'm sorry, but are you, as they say, "cereal"?

If you have played any Obsidian game, ever, you know that they take the utmost care with their companion npcs and oftentimes they are finely crafted. Not usually faceless, thoughtless goons.

If you are really on the edge on whether to buy the game and the fact that there is no romance in it is swaying you towards not buying it, I think you are doing yourself a massive disservice. I assume you are here because you love or like the idea of IE games returning. That you fondly remember classics like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape:Torment or maybe something Fallout or even something like Temple of Elemental Evil or Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader.

I don't see how whether or not Pillars of Eternity will have romances could possibly affect you in any way, as a fan of any of those games. If you are truly here as a fan, which I'm assuming is the case since the game hasn't even released yet, I frankly don't even begin to understand your thoughtprocess. If you are a fan, you know better than to say something as ridiculous as what you did. You know better than that, come on!

I've played KotOR2 (loved it but felt unfinished) and FONV (loved it but felt cut down to compensate for consoles).  Yeah I liked the characters there, but as those were 1st person 3D games they 'feel' kind of different than this one would.  Staring into Rose's eyes and speaking to her just seems a lot more personal than this games style.  Not sure how it will be to be honest.

But that wasn't my problem.  As I said it was how they responded to questions about romance that turned me off.  It was an attitude that really rubbed me wrong from someone who is supposedly wanting my money.

  5. Well they could have added romances to get more sales.  That's about the only reason I'm waiting on this one and didn't pre-order.

Need more love for Pale Elves. Have neither as much lore nor as many portraits available as the other races . How racist! :p

    (made by my humble self)

    Cool portraits 8)

Maybe I missed it, but what are the sizes needed for the portraits?

I made a lot of these for BG so I'd like to try to make some for this game.

    Large: 210x330

    Small: 76x96

Thanks.  Any particular format needed or would just JPG work?

  7. Yeah, after every adrenaline rush where a thirty foot monster is laying twitching on the broken ground, while I puke, tremble, and pull my trousers off to poo, I always strike up a romance with other adventurers, who are trying not to scream from the agony of their wounds.  Everything is just so sweet and calm and conducive to the sexual urges.  You know, later on, while we sit in our inn rooms, weeping from reaction to the entire horror of constant life and death struggles, we strike up witty conversations with one another and slip in a few seductive, sly comments.  It's such a romance, the adventuring life.  Especially with all that money and the hundreds of thieves guild members who descend upon us to replace townsfolk and steal our fantastically expensive magical artifacts and unique royal jewels from ancient dynasties.

Yeah, romance.  It makes the game more interesting, but it's not so realistic.  I'll opt to keep the games fantasy based.  After all, no one would saunter out into the wilds with only three to five companions to fight giants and dragons, let alone delving into dust and disease filled tunnels to combat the undead spirits and demons.  I get sick even thinking about poor little Buffy. Oh, I need some pizza.  Someone please buy me some pizza.

Interesting.  You make a post about a 30 foot monster and then declare that the romance is unrealistic.  I guess 'Fantasy Based' is a very narrow definition to you.

  8. IMO every good CRPG also contains within it a good virtual novel, the story, the driving force behind playing the game.  Some virtual novels have romance in them, other don't.  BG didn't, BG2 did.  I prefer BG2.  Of course the virtual novel in BG2 was harder to write, but like most things the more effort you put into it the better.

Course if the PoE writer just can't write a good romance virtual novel, well guess what, there are a lot of writers that can.  I would have assumed they got enough money to hire one.

  9. The existence of this thread amuses me.  It was basically created so that the Devs never have to read it.  It also keeps all the new romance threads from clogging up the forum.  All the while, those wanting romance feel like they are getting their voice out.  Genius really.

Well there was a Golden Age of CRPG's and arguably the best game of that time was BG2.  I guess I really don't expect much from the new generation of CRPG's, DOS, PoE, etc.  They've updated the game-play and graphics, but are not putting much effort into the story and little depth of characters.  You are never going to feel like you did when Aerie was resolved to live without wings because of you.  You will never have that sick feeling in your stomach when Jaheira is kidnapped away.  You never have that emotional roller coaster ride of Viconia dealing with her feelings.  Because this generation of Devs just don't want to put the effort into it.

Well, whatever.  Perhaps if this generation of CRPG's takes off more effort will be put into them.  We'll see.

  10. I guess I'm a bit late to the party since I just found out that the romances were discarded. Well, considering that I backed the title mostly because I believed the lies about getting an experience like BG2, I'm not particularly amused. There was a lot of cool stuff in BG/BG2 like the talking sword, Minsk and his hamster, the Beholder, etc. but the thing that made it really special were mostly the romances since they touched me on an emotional level.

I don't need a PoE just to get another run of the mill Kill & Loot game with a bit more text and a slightly more complex set of rules. I can get those by the dozens and in AAA quality. PoE was supposed to give me freedom and a more personal and emotional experience than Diablo & Co. They wouldn't have to be perfect, I have a very good 'imagination'. The game won't be perfect anyway, or does anyone really believe that the given text will always fit to every race & class combination?! I certainly don't.

I understand that the writers don't like to write romances. They are *embarrassing*, the whole stuff about *feelings* and even worse, the great evil that even surpasses Lovecraft's Great Old Ones by miles, the forbidden word that starts with 's' and ends with 'x' and has three letters. Writing about *that* is almost heresy on satanic level of course for the typical RPG writer. It's so much easier to write about the great evil that threatens the land, pathetic speeches, a few amusing jokes here and there while letting the player create huge piles of dead corpses in the name of some mysterious 'greater good' nobody really gives a damn about because there's no personal connection to it.

Sure, it will certainly a nice, amusing hack & slay game, but I really hope they will NEVER, EVER again claim that this will be an experience comparable to Baldur's Gate, because it most certainly won't. I wasn't particular thrilled with Bioware's latest titles, but compared to the disappointments Obsidian brought me with NWN2, DS3 and now this, they are still angels. I will never support Obsidian again.

Wow.  Wish I had wrote that.  I'll only add ... nothing.

    Err... Kill xp? ;)

Wait what?  There is no exp for kills?  What do you do gain levels by talking?

By completing quests. I miss kill xp, and rogue xp for picking locks and the like.

Is there some info on this somewhere?  I can't find anything in the wiki.  I can't even imagine how this would even work.

EDIT:  Nevermind, found it in the FAQ.  Still can see that being abused so badly.

  12.

Heck even the proposed harlot turns out not being what you think she is.  I thought we’d at least get a ‘fade to black’ scene like the old FO games or KotOR.  But no.

    Oh my God.

    Sex is not romance.

I never said it was, but whatever.

I hadn't put any money into PoE so no harm to me.  Besides by the time this comes out I'll probably I'll be knee deep into DA:I.  I just miss the old romances in BG2 and KotOR and thought they would make the effort to put those back in CRPG's.

  13. I was following both this game and Divinity Original Sin.  Then I learned that PoE didn’t have romance and I stopped following it.  (Well also learned the game had guns which I just despise in the fantasy CRPG).  DOS said they did have romance, then I bought into the Beta when it went on sale, then just before the game came out they said the game didn’t have romance.  And technically it doesn’t.  All you get is a few lines of dialog if your two PC’s liked each other enough.  (Still a great game though)

Yeah I was disappointed to say the least.  Heck even the proposed harlot turns out not being what you think she is.  I thought we’d at least get a ‘fade to black’ scene like the old FO games or KotOR.  But no.

So while waiting on the next patch for DOS (it’s supposed to add some new companions) I thought I’d check this game again, and I see it’s still in the same position as it was before.  Basically they’re letting us gripe, but are not going to do anything about it.  Bottom line it just sounds like no one wants to put the effort into writing a romance these days other than BioWare.  What really seems odd in this case is that this is a game that is at least partially fan funded, yet the fans don’t get what they want.  Personally I like having the deeper relationships with companions as it just ties the whole game together better.  Seriously just makes me want to play BG2 all over again.
