  1. Week in Maui & Kauai = Good.

Leaving a day late for said trip due to blizzard = Bad.

Day-later flight delayed, causing a missed connection and an unplanned night in San Francisco = Bad.

Actual time spent on the islands = Very Good.

Red-eye flight back to the Eastern U.S. = Very Bad.

Needing a vacation to recover from ordeal of retuning from vacation = Very Bad

  2. I try to make a point of not drinking too much before 7 pm. I blew that tonight. I knocked off work early today and stopped at the VFW on the way home. I ended up sraying there too long and drinking too much. One of guys gave me a lift home. I don't know how I'm getting over there in the morning to get my truck and go to work. Sounds like a sick day to me. Anywho, I'm going out to the back porch with a 12-pack of Icehouse and an ipod loaded with George Strait and Little Feat songs. Tonight I'm gonna teach the dogs and coyotes to sing!

  3. Didn't there used to be one? I thought everyone scared off the conspiracy theorists.

Too many people agreed with the conspiracists. Made me and GD go apoplectic.

;) Ok, so for the next one we only post theories we make up ourselves and see who can come up with tthe most plausable ones. There were a few about KOTOR 2 & 3 floating around that were just too funny.

  4. I find it funny that all the news clowns are in a snit over the "palm" cliffnotes yet say nothing when Obama uses a teleprompter to give a 2000 word pep talk to a bunch of middle school kids.

My problem with it isn't so much the notes themselves, but the fact that she had just finished critisizing Obama for using the teleprompter.

;) Now that IS funny. I hadn't heard that. Although, I must admit I haven't really been paying attention to the news for the past few weeks.

  5. I find it funny that all the news clowns are in a snit over the "palm" cliffnotes yet say nothing when Obama uses a teleprompter to give a 2000 word pep talk to a bunch of middle school kids. Ever heard Obama off teleprompter? He makes George W Bush sound coherent. Bush almost never used one.

But then you have to be able to read to get much good from them. ;)

    Hmm.

Would you rather have Obama or Palin as President?

Understand I am no particular fan of Obama's, but the idea of Palin as President seems appalling to me.

Put me down for "None of the Above".

I think I have a better shot in 2012 than Palin does.

  6. Here's a conspiracy theory for you... a senior congressman, John Murtha, just died while undergoing surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital (term limited at last, this guy was so corrupt it was almost funny). Anywho, there is a conpiracy theory floating around out there that the Obama admin had him killed to prevent a new defense appropriations scandal from surfacing.

As these things go it is a little lightweight and not very credible. There were a lot of them surrounding Clinton, some with just enough truth to make almost believe it.

Conspiracy theories are fun, we should make a thread for that.

  7. I find it funny that all the news clowns are in a snit over the "palm" cliffnotes yet say nothing when Obama uses a teleprompter to give a 2000 word pep talk to a bunch of middle school kids. But then you have to be able to read to get much good from them.

  8. Just got my acceptance letter to Rutgers University. It's probably the best school in New Jersey (or TCNJ) so I'm pretty stoked. In a few months I'll be the second Obsid kid to grow up on this forum and then leave it and never talk to anyone again (cough, thepixiesrock, cough)

    Congrats Krookie, thats great!

  9. Great game, great win for NO, Indy played well too. The game was everything you could want. It did not have the last minute drama of the previous two but still great to watch. The Who get 4 out of 5 stars for the half time show. Like Hurlie said, they are looking a little long in the tooth. Some great commercials too. My favorite was the Doritos commercial with the dog and the anti bark collar. I also loved the McDonalds one with Larry Bird, Lebron and the other guy (can't remember his name) that was a take on the HORSE ads from the 90s. Too bad MJ could not be in it too.

  10. It's funny but Blade Runner and BSG seem a little less improbable now.

Actually Meshugger brings up a really good point. How long until they start producing a child version for the sickos out there? How will that be recieved? Would that help with the problem of sexual abuse of kids by giving the pervs an outlet or encourage it?

There is one other thing about that robot that just makes me go eeww, when you are done with it you have to clean it out...eeww.

  11. Excerpt:

Las Vegas, Nevada (CNN) -- To some men, she might seem like the perfect woman: She's a willowy 5 feet 7 and 120 pounds. She'll chat with you endlessly about your interests. And she'll have sex whenever you please -- as long as her battery doesn't run out.

Meet Roxxxy, who may be the world's most sophisticated talking female sex robot. For $7,000, she's all yours.

"She doesn't vacuum or cook, but she does almost everything else," said her inventor, Douglas Hines, who unveiled Roxxxy last month at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lifelike dolls, artificial sex organs and sex-chat phone lines have been keeping the lonely company for decades. But Roxxxy takes virtual companionship to a new level.

Powered by a computer under her soft silicone "skin," she employs voice-recognition and speech-synthesis software to answer questions and carry on conversations. She even comes loaded with five distinct "personalities," from Frigid Farrah to Wild Wendy, that can be programmed to suit customers' preferences.

"There's a tremendous need for this kind of product," said Hines, a computer scientist and former Bell Labs engineer.

Roxxxy won't be available for delivery for several months, but Hines is taking pre-orders through his Web site, TrueCompanion.com, where thousands of men have signed up.

"They're like, 'I can't wait to meet her,' " Hines said. "It's almost like the anticipation of a first date."

Women have inquired about ordering a sex robot, too. Hines says a female sex therapist even contacted him about buying one for her patients.

The robot runs on a self-contained battery that lasts about three hours on one charge, Hines says. Customers can recharge Roxxxy with an electrical cord that plugs into her back.

A motor in her chest pumps heated air through a tube that winds through the robot's body, which Hines says keeps her warm to the touch. Roxxxy also has sensors in her hands and genital areas -- yes, she is anatomically correct -- that will trigger vocal responses from her when touched. She even shudders to simulate orgasm.

When someone speaks to Roxxxy, her computer converts the words to text and then uses pattern-recognition software to match them against a database containing hundreds of appropriate responses. The robot then answers aloud -- her prerecorded "voice" is supplied by an unnamed radio host -- through a loudspeaker hidden under her wig.

"Everything you say to her is processed. It's very near real time, almost without delay," Hines said of the dynamics of human-Roxxxy conversation. "To make it as realistic as possible, she has different dialogue at different times. She talks in her sleep. She even snores." (The snoring feature can be turned off, he says.)

Roxxxy understands and speaks only English for now, but Hines' True Companion company is developing Japanese and Spanish versions. For an extra fee, he'll also record customizable dialogue and phrases for each client, which means Roxxxy could talk to you about NASCAR, say, or the intricacies of politics in the Middle East.

    I'm speechless...

The first thing I thought was :To create her shape, a female model spent a week posing for a series of molds. I wonder how much THAT job paid?

The next thing I thought was, shes MUCH cheaper than a wife. (Trust me on that one).

  12. It's got everything to do with deliberately reinforcing your own bias rather than looking at things objectively.

Hmmm. I get the feeling that in your terminology those who "look at things objectively" either agree with you or change their minds so that they do and the ones who do not "reinforce their own bias".

I have a very clear understanding of what I believe to be, not so much right and wrong, but what works and what does not. And after 38 years, a college degree, and two careers everything I have experienced and learned (oft times at dire cost) has convinced me that my political philosophy is correct.

The difference between you and I, Krezack, is that I understand that someone else who led a different life can come to view things a different way and I don't think less of them for it. That is why I make an effort to never be condescending or nasty in my responses on this board and others. I'm not always succesful, but I always try. Would that others did the same around here.

Not singling you out, because it happens a lot around here and some are much worse than others (Taks, mkreu), just sayin.

  13. @ Enoch & Calax, please do not construe my comments as assigning blame to any political party. As Enoch correctly pointed out there is plenty to go around and policies that enabled the current "crisis" were the culmination of twenty years of small changes that in the aggregate made for big changes. I just found it curious that after spending so many years undoing the regulation they are all in a hurry to renact regulation. Apparently the lessons of 1929 do have an expiration date, The most useful apsect of Glass Stengal that I have yet to hear any politician suggest reinstating is the seperation between deposit banking and investment banking. It's removal in 1999 allowed the creation of the mergerd, too-big-to-fail super banks that found they were much more willing to take risks, I believe, knowing the government may bail them out. Of course, whats done is done and bringing that back now cannot be done without pain since, unlike 1929, these institutions did not fail.

@Enoch, I don't want to get into a hyperlink war with you here but I have many on my PC at home that thoughtfully highlights the very large role the CRA played in the "crisis". And, don't take this wrong but I am not impressed by any link to Slate. It is not what you might call "credible and unbiased". It would be like me posting links from World Net Daily to support a position. Only I would not do that.

  14. Kurt Warner announced his retirement. I know he doesn't have the long career, but I see him as a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame. Three Superbowl appearances, and in every one of them he played fantastic.

Not just that but a number of record breaking seasons including most yards and most completions. That 2001 Rams team, The Greatest Show on Turf, was really good. I thnk Warner does deserve to be there.

  15. The rest of GD's rant is what you get when every news item is read with the mindset of always assuming the absolute worst about people you have already decided to dislike, and ignoring any evidence that they may, in fact, be human. Sadly, this is how more and more Americans on both sides of the political spectrum have been viewing the world lately.

Yes, and it's really really frustrating trying to discuss politics with someone like that. To the point that it's probably not viable.

Because I have a radically different point of view than you do? Those are the people I'd most want to engage and figure out why they think the way they do. The ones who frustrate me are the one who think a certain way and have no ability to logically explain why. I think you will agree I am able to do that.

Or the ones who take a position just to be antagonistic like your alt Lord of the Flies.

    Just Kidding.

  16. I'm going to drum on about Australia again, so for anybody sick of that, avert your eyes: Australia has a fairly heavily regulated finance and banking sector. We also happen to have one of the top 5 most prosperous AND stable banking sectors in the world. None of our 4 biggest banks are allowed to even consider merging. During the financial 'crisis', our banks all turned a profit (I think it was all of them) and expanded overseas acquisitions. Thank you, regulation!

You don't want less regulation, you want smart regulation; evidence-based policy.

@Calax, pay attention to this, I'm covering some points you made too.

Following the '29 crash the Glass-Stengal act was passed that protected deposit banking from the fluctuations and risks of investment banking. It regulated interest rates and for fifty years and several rececssions prevented the financnial meltdown we are told we just avoided. I find it curious that the Democrats are screaming for banking in regulation when they are the ones who undid Glass-Stengal. In 1980 under Carter the Depository Deregulation Act, and under Clinton the Gramm-Leach-Biely Act effectively repealed Glass-Stengal and ALLOWED the banks to do the very things were are now told caused the crisis. Add to that the Community Reinvestment Act under Carter-Clinton-Bush that REQUIRED banks to write the same high risk mortgages that by and large went into default and there is your mess that Obama stammers about. Now, no matter what your political persuasion is, there is one fact that is beyond debate. The US Government CAUSED this current mess by meddling. Now they tell you they can solve it by meddling.

None of the "reforms" I've heard about resembles Glass-Stengal. All of them involve raising fees and taxes on banks and investments and barring banks from certain types of investing. All of those fees and taxes will be paid by CONSUMERS!!!!! Yes, that is how the world works kiddies. When Obama sticks his nose in the air and promises to go after "fat-cat" bankers in his cynical attempt to rouse populist anger, just remember, he is placing fees on YOU. Raising taxes on YOU. No matter what he hits the banks with, they will pass it on to you and you cannot stop him, or them. The only way to avoid it is to cash in your investmets, cash out your bank accounts and bury your money in the backyard. Which is probably not a bad plan anyway with his like in power.

And for those of you who are complaining about the banks holding the TARP money, I assure that was by design. No matter what Obama said in speeches, the last thing in the world he wanted was for TARP money to be used as loan fodder. Unless he is a fool, and I devoutly hope he is not. Think about this, TARP just about doubled the amount of dollars in circulation. So by mid 2009 there was twice the capital chasing the same amount of assets as in 2008. Does anyone else see a serious problem with that? Now since the TARP money was repaid and not loaned out, at least by the big banks, no harm was done. The smaller banks that could not pay have been closed for the most part. Again, that was by design no matter what they tell you in speeches.

Even you must admit, there hasn't been much to like about Obama's administration or the 114th Congress.

As for his ignorace on economics, take for example his comment about raising fees on banks that "pay their CEOs million dollar bonuses". He either does not realize (then he's ignorant) or dosen't care (then he's heartless) about who actually PAYS fees and taxes the government levies on banks, companies etc.

It really is not hard to think the worst of people when that is all you recieve from them. From my perspective, I want small, limited, and non intrusive government at the federal level. The government with the most influence over me should be in Nashville, not Washington. Because that is the government I have the most influence over. That is NOT what Obama and the left is serving up. Far, far from it.

  18. The department of homeland security has been paying special attention gun-owners, veterans, small governments advocates (i.e. Republicans) as potential terrorists meanwhile real terrorists are sneaking bombs on planes and Obama will not even call that terrorisim.

Do you have any proof of that? I don't think the government ever took any interest in our guns. Also, he did call those events terrorism, and I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that he didn't.

Congress has been ramming through a health care bill that does nothing to address health care costs aside from throwing people in jail who do not wish to purchase their garbage plan. In the absolute height of arrogance and hubris they have done all of this with exactly 0 input from opponents and insulting their constituents as "Nazis" when the voice their opposition.

I've seen more who are against this thing calling Obama a nazi, than the other way around

  19. @GD: Right now, the Obama Admin's political future looks a little like the Clinton Admin at the same point in its rule. Some high-profile failures and a still-floundering economy have everyone down on their chances, and it looks like the opposition is going to make some serious gains in Congress in the fall. But I don't see anybody in the GOP who would be a particularly effective or credible challenger in 2012.

Yep I concur. 2012 is an eternity away politically speaking. And on the other side the Republican party has done nothing, zilch, nada, to deserve anyones votes other than not being Democrats. Plus the libertarian wing of the Republicans (the "Tea Party" and "9-12" coalitions) has risen so far that they are now drowning out the neo-cons, rockafellers, and buckley Republicans which threatens Republican unity because there is no strong leader (like Reagan) to unify them all. Romney is the most likely to get the nod because it is his turn. Thats the way they work. But you can bet the Tea Partiers and 9-12ers will not have him.

The Democrats on the other hand have managed to piss off everyone because they are catagoricaly opposed to any kind of freedom, social or economic and so far their solution to everything is to seize it and let the government take over. Obama has been petty, arrogant, condescending and downright insulting to eveyday Americans. The department of homeland security has been paying special attention gun-owners, veterans, small governments advocates (i.e. Republicans) as potential terrorists meanwhile real terrorists are sneaking bombs on planes and Obama will not even call that terrorisim. They are absolutely heedless of the fact that 61% of the country is against them and their only response is "we know whats best for you".

I talk to people all the time who are sick to the point of disgust with both of them (Repubs & Dems). There has never been a better time for a 3rd party to rise to power but there just is not one that has the wherwithal to do so, and no political leaders to galvanize two or three of them together into one powerful one. I'm hopin Obama will get a strong primary challenge. I can think of at least five democrats I'd rather have than him, I can think of dozens of Repubs.

I have a Labrador Retriever that I know has a better command of economics than Obama has and he is never nasty, condescending or insulting. Maybe he should run. Cosmo for President!

  20. That was really cheap and low class for Obama to call out the SCOTUS during his State of the Union speech. And that jackass Schumer in a fit of petulence and childishness claps right in Alitos ear. It amazes of me how small and petty men of such low character can be elected to such a high office. Maybe the good citizens of New York will do the whole country a favor and vote Schumer out of office in 2012. Small chance of that. Obama is looking more and more like a dead duck in 2012. God I hope so.

I'd trade Obama for Hillary Clinton right now if I could.
