  1. It's odd that no one asked OP what a "meaningful" update looks like.

So far the updates look to me as same updates as for first PoE, except with a bit more beef. With PoE screenshots and gifs were truly rare. Gameplay updates about classes (aka what is class X and how does it play) worked for the first game, but you can barely do that in PoE 2. Many sub-classes sound like they are in a very early stage and could still change drastically at this point.

So what would you expect Obsidian to provide?

I'm going to take a guess and say about 3-4 minutes of in-game footage with commentary.

  2. I used to feel BG2 was better than 1 as well, and without mods or the Beamdog polishing (which was just the applying of aforementioned mods at install with some prettying up, but I digress) it is technically better, but I have since found an appreciation for the first one.  First one had a bit more exploration and a bit less grimness than the second, plus I seem to enjoy lower level adventuring more than high level I find.  Just mho of course, just one I find interesting in how it has changed over the years.

Back in the day, that was a major gripe about BG1 and that they "fixed" for BG2, a lot of wilderness areas where there was little or no content. That was a plus for me, I love wandering the woods and then suddenly running into a ogre, or traveling merchant, or finding a random item hidden in a tree stump.

  3.

Well, upgrading Sworn Enemy with five fiery projectiles was something Pallegina could already do in Pillars. What's more interesting is that the ability has two possible upgrades - are they exclusive? But it might not have anything to do with subclasses.

Never knew that she could in the first one.  Given that its been stated that Pallegina's order (five sun's) is a unique subclass only useable by her I am fairly confident that it is subclass specific.  Which means we should see similar things with (at very least) the other paladin orders and potentially with others.

There's a couple of good game guides online to poke around on, here's the one on Paladins. It lists Pallegina's special Abilities including that one.

Frermàs mes Canc Suolias (Pallegina only)
    • Vielo Vidòrio - When the paladin uses Flames of Devotion, nearby allies gain increased Attack Speed.
    • Wrath of Five Suns - Whenever the paladin uses Sworn Enemy, five orbs of flame leap from his or her hand and fly toward the target.
  4. Far be it from me to dissuade anyone from their impressions of a piece of art or discussions thereof, but it may be useful to know just wearing a slightly modified vailian npc outfit.

Since you're here can you confirm that Xoti still has her sickle and shield lantern and that the last comment made on Fig officially about her dual wielding scythes was a mistake? Thanks in advance.

  5.

The anime "problems" with Ydwin aren't weapon based though, her wielding a rapier is fine unless it was 2-3 times her normal size ala Final Fantasy or something.

Exactly what these problems are seems to vary significantly based on who's explaining them.

But to clarify, in the post you've quoted I'm not asserting that Ydwin and Xoti would be considered anime-esque for the same reasons; one of the few points of agreement on this subject thus far is that there are plenty of possible reasons for making anime comparisons, even if there's far less agreement about the validity of these reasons.

Duel wielding has been a Dungeons & Dragons trope forever.

Dual wielding normally two-handed weapons like scythes, as suggested by the "akimbo scythes" description, would seem fairly likely to elicit anime comparisons, however (even if I do dimly recall hearing about a death knight in the Mystara D&D campaign setting who dual wielded greatswords). It obviously didn't, though, hence my surprise in the post that Xoti seemingly wasn't attracting any anime-based hate herself.

The "akimbo scythes" comment probably was a mistake unless they've changed direction on her (?). There's a little bit of in-game footage of Xoti with her sickle and lamp (to show off the lighting effect of the lamp on the environment IIRC, forgot which social media platform I watched it on). I mean you're right, scythes would be a two-handed weapon for sure and I would be against them being dual-wield in this game.

  6. With all this talk of Ydwin being some sort of anime-influenced blot on the face of Eora, I'm surprised that no one's howling for Xoti's blood. Update #17 did say that she "totes akimbo scythes", which sounds like it'd end up as something like this:

    <image removed to save space>

Granted, it was most likely the writer's mistake since Gaun's props are a lamp and sickle. Even so, given the faint whiffs that have set some people off from that same update, I'd really expect more blood to boil at the mere thought of Xoti twirling scythes around.

The anime "problems" with Ydwin aren't weapon based though, her wielding a rapier is fine unless it was 2-3 times her normal size ala Final Fantasy or something. Duel wielding has been a Dungeons & Dragons trope forever.

    Hey guys.

Did you know rapiers have crossguards? It means Ydwin does not have one, but rather a smallsword (yeah, hilt is not too standard but it can pass as a smallsword).

I really like it. Ydwin does not seem very strong and since rapiers are not light it makes more sense to give her something lighter like a smallsword. Good job Obsidian.

And i've yet to see a proper explanation on why Ydwin looks anime.

Just showing pictures won't cut it.

She does look a bit like a typical anime schoolgirl, or maybe a bit like Sailor Moon? Though TBH, I'm not sure where the anime accusations are coming from. We'd have to ask those who originally started the whole 'Ydwin is anime' thing to know for sure.

This. It's not so much the rapier and elf ears as it's the bookish spectacles and Gothic Lolita outfit. It's one pair of leggings removal away from Sailor Moon for sure.

I'm no stranger to anime, but I didn't see the anime aspects in Ydwin until all of the "weeaboos" crawled out of the shadows and started blowing kisses at her. Now I can't unsee the anime tropes and the unusual attention makes me (unfortunately) happy that she's not becoming a Companion. This is why we can't have nice things!

I actually like the idea of the character based on the synopsis and as others have said it would be nice to have someone connected to animancy (not anime-cy!) as a Companion option (yes I know she's still a Sidekick). I do appreciate that Obsidian, in regards to artwork, was trying to create something more left of field, but maybe tone down some of the anime "appeal" and make her more like Nedyn in the Brackenbury District.

  8. He has a moon crescent on his forehead. He has fins and other aquatic features. Ondra is the goddess of the sea and moon (among other things related to that). His head is covered with some wierd growth. So it's pretty obvious that he is a godlike who's "blessed" by ondra - like moon godlikes are. Maybe just a variant of moon godlike, maybe a standalone godlike version. I think it's the former. Moon godlike racial ability is called "Silver Tide". I don't think they will (or want to) come up with anything more fitting.

Belt buckler looks kind of like an interpretation of Ondra's symbol, too.
