Yea so PoE was doomed to be worse by default I suppose...PoE is saddled with his ****ty version of D&D or w/e the hell crap mechanics he wants to call PoE.

This is really the problem with all modern CRPGs. People tend to talk with ignorant contempt about AD&D but that was RPG for decades and decades; all developed by the gamers themselves for years andn years. Every single detail of AD&D was there for a reason. The job of Black Isle wasn`t to reinvent the wheel but to move the 30 year RPG tradition AD&D represented over to a new medium, period. But at the same time the development of RPGs was taken away from the gamers themselves and put in the hands of more or less clueless devs who all later decided to reinvent the wheel because they had forgotten what their job was. And we have no way of complaining and, because of CRPGs replacing our traditional RPGs, very few alternatives. It is impossible for a development team to make a new system that is even close to being as good as AD&D was. It can`t be done. So why do they keep trying?

What many here haven't realised is that they judge PoE harshly and are not open-minded.

Why is it so incomprehensible to you that some people find the game just average, and other people find it terrible? Kind of like, oh let me just pick some random game out of thin air here... how about Baldur's Gate? Or Icewind Dale? Yeah, there are people that don't like some of the classics on which this game draws its inspiration. Is it really, honestly so hard to grasp that some people find flaws in this game - more than they feel can be fixed to make it a great game?

What are those people doing in these forums ? Trolling ? The forums are for people who (more or less) like the game, care about its future, want to see improvements and discuss about all that.

Even if you've paid 25 or more bucks to back the game, bitching in the forums will not get you anywhere or make you a better person.

Oh give me a break! Customer feedback is what these forums are for unless they want to be totally useless. If that feedback is negative the problem lies with the game, not with the unsatisfied customers.

Everyone except you and Irenaeus probably.

well, no.  mat516 seemed to express our concerns about the review already, so no need to repeat.  the thing is, where matt no doubt read the whole thing, we couldn't. am admitting that we got a few paragraphs deep before we realized it were offering little more than a bad nostalgia flashback to too many rants we recall from a couple years o' poe development.   the disenfranchised, limited by the obsidian message board medium, found a new outlet to release pent up vitriol?  am not actually opposed to such rampages as Gromnir has indulged once... maybe twice.

    *shrug*

lewis black at least tries to make us laugh when he does this kinda thing.

no harm though. it is just a review.  why do we need a review to tell us about a game we already played?

have never made it through an entire codexian review since spazmo's debacle o' a toee review, but at least spazmo pretended as if he were giving tim cain a fair review.  sensuki's link had us rolling our eyes after two paragraphs.

    HA! Good Fun!

No just you I think. Also, someone mentioned the word "arrogance". Maybe you should look it up.

  4. One of the biggest gaming industry problems nowdays is that even such games as CRPG try to bend their knee to casual scrubs i mean there is ton of Call of Duty released every year , assassins creed you can buy atleast 5 times a year , and we get 1 CRPG a decade and it has to be winnable for every dumb kid .. and if that is not enough the hardest difficulty of the game ofcourse has to be SOLOable for the fakin achievement  .... **** yeh commerce.. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY , and even then you guys donate couple of millions before the game launches so kids can come to this forum and cry how paladin is a bad class or how monk sux because you cant play him without armor and with bare fists aka leesin or smth  ...  lol i wonder how many steam kids would kill themselves if they had to play something like Commandos 2 at present day , there was no place for casuals in that game

CRPGs have never really been hard though, at least not in the way something like Starcraft is hard. As long as you can save all the time this will remain the case. If you absolutely want PoE to be hard then play it without pausing the game and refuse to load your games when you fail. if you die you have to start over again. That sounds hard enough for me and you won`t have to spend any time complaining about the difficulty of a game that isn`t about being difficult, but telling a story and making the player figure some things out to advance the story. It`s not just lazy slackers who make games boring. "Hardcore" people do as well because they always always start moaning about balance, whether or not the game in question actually needs balance.

I was on level eight of Od Nua but before the master stairs when I ran out of supplies and needed to rest. This entailed 14 loading screens up and down so about 7 minutes straight of staring at loading screens just to rest and buy two supplies.

    DUDE...

    Master Stairs.

    'Nuff said.

    Users/[uSERNAME]/Saved Games/Pillars of Eternity

Dude, learn to read. Nuff said. I wasn`t able to reach the master stairs and had to get back up to rest and get supplies. Why are forums always crawling with people liek you who have an opinion and just can`t wait to cram it into a conversation whether it`s relevant or not?

  6. I don't mind any form of technical reading. I love short descriptive, efficient sentences that empower me to solve a problem.

But god damn it man, how the hell do you guys bring yourselves to read all the text in this game?

But once the lack of voice acting creeps in, it's just sooo hard to stay interested in the game.

To quote Sims 3: "Taba flims!" Apparently that makes sims literate so maybe it`ll help you.

  7. Yeah I also have the load time issues, it takes a while, but they bother me far less than quicksave, which is anything but. My PC has an i5-4460 3.2GHz, Asus R9 270, 8GB RAM, 120 SSD, running Linux Mint.

Not high end, but certainly not sluggish, and there has been a dramatic dropoff in performance specifically when loading/safing PoE areas. It's not about hardware.

Then again, complaining about 10-12 sec load times as a major problem makes me think you should practice having your immersion broken by reading a novel in public or something. If you really think these load times are an issue that makes the game significantly less enjoyable, I suggest you take up Dzogchen meditation, or perhaps Stoicism. When I was a kid (like five years ago) we had our immersion broken constantly, and we liked it!

This is weird. My quicksaves take about half a second while my loading screens last 15+ seconds. And it apparently doesn`t matter if it`s a broom closet or Alaska I`m loading. it`s exactly as slow every single time. And I have a high end PC so shouldn`t have any problems. I`ve just uninstalled it now because it isn`t playable for me. I was on level eight of Od Nua but before the master stairs when I ran out of supplies and needed to rest. This entailed 14 loading screens up and down so about 7 minutes straight of staring at loading screens just to rest and buy two supplies. I don`t understand why the loading screen barrage in PoE wasn`t dealt with in alpha. Anyone who for whatever reason gets stuck with long loading times will be driven up the wall by them. And even if they aren`t, do you really need to load each floor of buildings separately? What are they, Taj Mahal?

  8. Stopped reading when he started complaining because the game isn't modeled specifically for him and his play style. Lame post.

And another one. Who in the world could possibly care when you stop reading something? Just leave the page and don`t leave mindless comments when you don`t have anything intelligent to say. Just the utter stupidity of complaining about people`s opinions when that`s all the people on this forum are doing all day long boggles the mind. Yes it`s an opinion. That`s why I posted it here, in order that I might express my opinion. But of course, my opinion are a waste of time, even though you decided to leave a mindless comment underneath it anyway, while your mindless comment is worthy of everyone`s serious contemplation! All hail the Mindless One! Meanwhile back in the real world, opinions are what forum posts usually are unless they are trolls or questions. Just go read a book or something. Or take up gradening. Internet forums clearly aren`t for you.

  9.

But for the life of me I can`t understand the hype over the game which seems almost hysterical to me. After having finished the game

    I stopped reading here.

Good, you don`t sound very interesting. Now all that remains is to stop commenting on threads when you have nothing intelligent to contribute and we`ll be getting somewhere.

3: It is not better than Baldur`s Gate. And it should be considering that Baldur`s Gate is 17 years old.

Well, look, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you're definitely entitled to yours OP.

But I think it's strange to expect PoE to be better than Baldur's Gate. The comparison itself is fair - this is a game that explicitly sets out to recapture some of the spirit and style of the Infinity classics. But how could exceeding and improving upon those games possibly be a meaningful measure of PoE's success?

I mean, the Baldur's Gate games are two of my favourite videogames ever. There is nothing that has drawn me back in so frequently and so satisfyingly as the BGs.

For me, deciding that PoE isn't worthy of hype because it isn't "better" than two of the best games ever made is like saying that Interstellar isn't worthy of acclaim because it isn't "better" than 2001: A Space Odyssey

I`m not saying that I think the game is bad, let me repeat that because it doesn`t seem to have registered with everyone. Only a 10 to me means a perfect game, which sort of implies to best in the genre or if not the best at least something innovative and fresh. I realize that we have different ways of looking at things like this but I have about....ten - fifteen games at 10 in the entire history of PC gaming. So that`s why I thought it was so strange to go on MC and find almost all tens for PoE.

Of course it is just my opinion but I think both BG games and Torment are better games in the same genre as PoE full stop. Not in every single respect obviously. Some things in PoE are very nice indeed. But overall I stand by this opinion. And to me that takes it down to a 9 all by itself. Not because PoE is bad but because it could have been better. And we know it could have been better because we have examples of games in the genre that are better. I would also say that Divinity: OS is a bit better because it manages to be very original in many ways, which is not easy these days.

The other issues I listed drag PoE down one point each in my mind. One for not being open enough and too linear - the exact same complaint I made about both IW Dale games in comparison to the BG duo - as well as not having as many NPCs as I would have liked, and another one for the loading times. And that`s a 7 to me. These are not small issues to me at all but crucial to the gameplay and the longevity of my enjoyment of the game. And I know that there are many side quests and stuff to do. That is not what I mean by linear. What I mean is that you only ever have one or two areas to go to outside Defiance Bay. There`s not really much choice involved. Not everyone minds this at all of course. But I do so to me this is a limitation I am not happy with. Exploration and a sense of freedom of choice is a key element of traditional RPGs, long before Baldur`s Gate was even on the planning stage. Yet it has been almost totally lost in CRPGs and this annoyed me when I played IW Dale and it annoys me now. Like we say in Norway though: opinions are like the bum: split down the middle.

I am happy that people are enjoying the game. It is a good game. But my rather peculiar experience on MC led me to come here and write something as well. Not because I hate the game. But because I have some issues with it I wish I didn`t. I still wish Obsidian luck with any new KS projects or any sequels to PoE. And if it is as good as PoE I will certainly support it like I just did PoE, as long as it isn`t a sports simulator, an anime dating game or an FPS action game. I have to have some principles! But there must be room to express oneself about reservations to a game. Even PoE.

  11. I`ve been enjoying playing PoE quite a bit. But for the life of me I can`t understand the hype over the game which seems almost hysterical to me. After having finished the game I felt pleased but at the same time slightly disappointed, perhaps because I had expected more. I do not think it is an improvement over Baldur`s Gate at all quite frankly. In some cases it`s just not as good period. When I wrote a Metacritic review to this effect, where the flood of 10s is just beyond belief, I was subjected to a comical campaign of enraged fans who not only downvoted this review - fair enough really - but made a campaign of downvoting all my other reviews also. I have never experienced anything like it on MC, not even when I trashed a WoW expansion. It is quite amazing. Anyway, just so I`ve said it, these are my three main reasons for not agreeing with the hype:

1: Lack of replayability. There are not enough companions for replays to have much to offer. Yes I know you can make your own party members. But I never liked to do that in the IE games. I prefer the immersion of recruiting NPCs and having party members with some sense of personality. And eight is just one playthrough and change as far as I can tell. The eight there are are good. That isn`t the problem. But the way I play these games I will never play a monk, rogue or barbarian at all because there aren`t any.

Secondly it`s not open enough compared to Baldur`s Gate. Apart from Defiance Bay there`s only really ever one place you can go at any time, unless you want to be instantly killed of course. By contrast Baldur`s Gate had like 20 areas to choose between at any time and you could deliberately spend ages doing something completely irrelevant to the main quest. And you just can not in PoE.

2: Obscene loading times. There are just too many loading screens and they last for ages. At least 25 seconds is my experience and it just makes exploration a pain in the butt when it should be the best part of the game.

3: It is not better than Baldur`s Gate. And it should be considering that Baldur`s Gate is 17 years old.

To me this takes the game from a 10 if these, in my opinion major, issues were not present to a 7, which was what I gave the game on metacritic when the campaign against me there started. A good game but very far from a classic. It is also not the best game in genre, which I think it should be to merit a 10. Other than that the game is fine and I said so in my review. I did enjoy my one playthrough quite a lot and do not regret buying the game. In fact I love the genre and will happily support any devs making games like this, even if the games are average, just so more might be produced in future. But it still has to be criticized fairly a and not be fawned over like some rediscovery of a species believed to be exitinct. "Look everyone it`s a dodo! Don`t raise your voices or say anything disparaging or it might die off again!"

And the honest truth for my part is that I don`t imagine I`ll be starting a new game of PoE anytime soon, because I just can`t find a compelling reason to do so. Maybe in a couple of years after a few patches and after some more companions have been added. But just how is this game a 10 when BG is better in these respects by far? What is BG then? An 11? 12? I am hard pressed to find any aspect where I think PoE is the better game. That doesn`t mean it`s bad. Just that some people seem to have lost all sense of proportion when it comes to PoE. The hype is just unbelievable. I would be curious to know just how many of the people who are now raging while downvoting my reviews on Metacritic, simply because I had the temerity to criticize obvious shortcomings with PoE, will even be playing it in a couple of weeks, once their first playthrough is done with. Frankly I doubt very much if any of them will. I know I`d rather start my 53rd playthrough of Baldur`s Gate right now.

  12. This is really weird - I'm on a fairly old HDD and my load screens are nearly instant - I don't see them being any more plentiful than they were in IE games - and they're certainly much faster for me.  My Quick saving *was* nearly instant for a large portion of them game, then around hour 40 it started slowing way down (I assume perhaps because I have a GIANT stash of crap i'm carrying around).   Maybe there's something in particular that's slowing the show down.

I figured that was the case and that they`re not meant to be as slow as they are for me. But my loading screens right now are about...15-20 seconds? When you`re in the Stronghold or in Defiance Bay it`s just terrible. Enter a house - loading screen - walk for two seconds to the stairs - loading screen - nothing on the second floor and down the stairs again -loading scren - out the door - loading screen. Repeat for every house in every area and every time you want to visit the stronghold and it just saps the fun out of exploring for me. I`m pretty sure that whole houses would load in BG and not just one floor at a time. That would already have helped me a lot here.

It`s weird that it changed duration for you though. Maybe there`s some issue with Steam. I suppose we`ll have to be patient for a bit and see how it goes.

  13. I love playing PoE and my only issue at all is all the loading screens. It was fine at first and I didn`t really mind much, but then I got to Defiance Bay and now I`m really struggling with patience. Exploring Ondra`s Gift along meant 21 loading screens for me. And they`re just long enough to make it exasperating to have five of them pop up in three minutes and just short enough that you can`t really do much of anything while waiting for them. I now dread new buildings because of this. "What if there`s a second floor! That`ll mean at least four loading screens!". I`m not a programmer but is it really necessary for each floor of a tiny building to load separately?

I started out trying to read a book while waiting for the loading screens (Gates of Rome by Conn Iggulden. Great book!) but basically have time for one paragraph and then have to put it down again. I also tried butt clenches but lost my discipline after a while. How do people cope with the loading screens? Is it just me? Maybe I need to meditate...

If the price of freedom is being offended occasionally then I`ll be offended all day long if I have to.

Careful, some people seem to think that your freedom ends where their feelings begin. You might get yourself in trouble for daring to say such things.

Well quite. I was trying to be funny earlier but the big issue with PC truly is that anything at all can be made illegal or incorrect to say under such a regime. In the USSR, a relevant example since that`s where this all came from, you were given a psychiatric diagnosis if you criticized the government, or said anything politically incorrect, and then locked up. "Inflexibility of opinion" they called it and that was you gone for 20 years in Siberia. And when you listen to some of these feminists and other identity fanatics they sound about ready to ship anyone they don`t like off to camp somewhere. It`s getting harder and harder to see what the difference is between the west today and the USSR in the 1970s some days. The dynamics are all there. All we need is to tighten the screws and off we go with gulags for "transphobes", "homophobes" and racists (I`m sorry but these just are not real words and I refuse to give them credit by using them seriously. Newspeak belongs in fiction.).

BUT IF THEY DON'T AGREE WITH IT, THAT MEANS IT HAS TO BE CENSORSHIP!

It's definitely censorship, but I think the flawed assumption here is that all censorship is "bad."

For example, I'm pretty sure that just about any major website would not allow the KKK to write articles for them.  Is this censorship?  Probably.  Is it "bad?"  Definitely not.

In one sense yes. But I think there is a larger perspective here of the progressive nature of this stuff. 100 years ago nobody would have batted an eye at a racist comment. 50 years ago nobody would have cared about a slur against gay people etc. And now there is a zombie rant on twitter over some mild limerick poking fun at transgenderism, a very concept which would have caused a veritable revolution if it had been so much as talked about 100 years ago. What`s next is my question and the reason I personally would not even censor racism on my website as a matter of principle. Not because I agree with that but because I value freedom more than other people`s fickle hypersensitivities. If the price of freedom is being offended occasionally then I`ll be offended all day long if I have to. The various PC people seem to not acknowledge this perspective at all though.

  16. ITT: people complaining about censorship, despite not knowing what censorship is.

This isn't a free speech issue, people. Stop trying to make it into one.

I`m sorry but you are wrong. Creating a climate of political correctness where people self censor to avoid opprobium is the very essence of modern censorship and it was pioneered by the Soviets. They were also the ones who coined the term "political correctness" although in Soviet propaganda it had positive connotations. The whole thing is very simple: in order for something to be a crime there needs to be some action. You can not jail someone for criminal intent if they are unable to follow it up with a criminal act. That`s the basis of the western legal system. Yet sometimes one gets the feeling that people are more upset at examples of politcally incorrect speech and allegedly offensive statements than they are at actual crimes going on. Just one example for me personally, if I had to choose which offended me more, a racist comment or exposed political corruption then I wouldn`t even notice the racist comment. One is an outrageous crime full stop and the other, while possibly both crude, vulgar and offensive, is harmless unless followed up by action. And no it isn`t and shouldn`t be a crime to hurt someone`s feelings. You might take a pop on the nose if you spout off to the wrong person but that should be the extent of it.

As long as there is even one actual crime going on for us to concentrate on I personally don`t think we should stifle or censor any speech, even the speech I disagree with. In fact particularly not the speech I disagree with. Free speech legislation exists to protect unpopular speech, not popular speech. Popular speech doesn`t need legal protection.

The list of things you are not allowed to say, criticize or talk about without beiing insulted and called names in the west is already getting pretty long as it is. And that is what is truly unworthy of a free society.

  17.

Talk about being overly sensitive. Also, "transphobic" isn`t a proper word. And even if it was it doesn`t apply here. A phobia means an irrational fear of something. Making a joke at somebody else`s expense therefore does not make you phobic. Sigh...Can`t you at least get a dictionary before you start complaining about nonsense?

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/transphobia

    http://dot429.com/articles/2486-transphobic-officially-added-to-oxford-english-dictionary

    http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/transphobia

It can be crammed into as many dictionaries as it likes. It is still an illiterate nonsense and an abuse of the English language. Phobia has nothing to do with anything whatsoever so what on earth has it got to do at the end of this meaningless word? It is literally connoting someone who has an irrational and uncontrollable fear of crossing over. A fear of bridges or something. It`s like living in George Orwell`s 1984 here or something, with government agencies dedicated to destroying language. Making fun of perverts (And do please bother looking up the definition of that as well before commenting) is not phobia. Offending people is not a crime because what offends is subjective so equal enforcement of the "law" would be impossible. Whatever you say someone is going to be offended by it. Personally I am offended by people who use meaningless words without understanding what they are saying. And I am very offended by people who get offended over nothing and start demanding censorship. Here are some other things that offend me which I must demand censored with immediate effect:

    1: Televized pageants for children.

2: Military propaganda during sports arrangements.

    3: Politicians.

    4: Shampoo commercials.

    5: Income taxes.

    6: Quest markers in RPGs.

    7: Tatoos.

    8: Door to door salesmen.

    9: Light beer.

    10: The drug war.

    11: Speed boats.

12: People who start every sentence with "like", "LOL" or "WTF".

    13: Monarchy.

14: The annual cross country ski sprint which takes place in my town every March.

15: US torture camps on Cuba.

    16: Newspapers.

So since I am offended by them these activities must stop, right? In fact let`s all make a list of the things that offend us and ban all of that! Afterward we could just all go bury ourselves because all human behavior would be banned. Right? Right!

  18. 1: It's not transphobic. It's mildly amusing though.

OK I can officially not take it anymore so here goes with my impromptu and totally unsolictated language course for dummies:

1: Trans. From Latin. A highly useful word which means to cross over.

2: Phobia. An irrational and uncontrollable fear.

    Ergo:

3: Transphobia: An irrational and uncontrollable fear of crossing over. Maybe a brigdge, maybe into another dimension. Who knows? Either way I refuse to accept that words are hijacked by pervs like this, as if their sordid little world of personal sexuality matters to anyone but themselves! Am I really the only one on the planet who understands how ridiculous this totally made up word is? I am seriously offended by this misuse of perfectly good words and must demand that it be censored! I am offended even more by morons who get offended at everything as if other people are supposed to care, and must demand that they stop being offended! And I am also offended by demands for censorship and must demand that they be censored! Immediately!

  20. I have experienced everything the OP has written in regards to combat. Ranged weaponry is almost useless as the speed at which the enemies close to engage is quicker than the time you can get a 2nd shot off. Scouting/sneaking seems to be a whole party affair as well. I can't get a single member to sneak only the whole party. Not that it matters as my range of discovery is the same as the range of my ranged wepaonry, so there is no tactical advantage.

In fact, I reduced the difficulty to easy and had 4 armed and armored ready players and couldn't even kill 4 Boars (2 of them Young Boars!).  Let's not even discuss the Cave Bear which required 3 of the 4 players to die, every potion drunk, all dinner plates wiped clean and several spells mis-cast to finally kill that thing. Pre-combat buffing seems to be impossible as most of the buffs can only be cast after combat has already started and their duration is too brief, never mind how long it takes to cast even the simplest buff.

Trying to figure out the functional difference between endurance and health is a real head scratcher. What is the point of actual health when it is a non factor in combat? Once you lose endurance, you're out of the battle. You could have hundreds of health points and get knocked out in the first round!

Reading the replies carefully I see there is a lot of blind fanaticism to genuine critisism and your devotion to an inefficient system does no service to the game.  Curiously, I played the beta more than once and didn't run into these specific problems, it's almost as if they wanted to surprise us with them.

I just don`t understand how it can be this hard. I cleared the bear cave on hard with Eder tanking and two mages casting spells without any trouble at all. Nobody died and I didn`t have to use any potions either. The fight I have had to try the most times so far is the pack of lions right east of the big city. But that also got done in the end with five characters at level 4. Are you guys deliberately leading with squishies just so you can come here and complain or something?

  21.

    4. Traps.  The few really bad fights I encounter, I have traps on hand and will set it up so that I can 'pull' them in a way that causes the group to bunch up and trigger something like a noxious explosive trap.

How do you craft traps and where?

If you successfully disarm one it pops up in your inventory and you can use it yourself. Pretty cool system for traps actually.

  22. Dated is just such a wrong choice of words to describe art full stop. The PoE graphics do seem inexplicably....bland to me though. Nothing much to whine about but it has struck me, even though I`m still not sure precisely why. I think maybe it`s the character models. I had a hard time making them look different from each other during character creation and playing the game everyone of the same race looks basically the same. But it`s a small thing to me. i don`t care much about graphics anyway. I must say that I was impressed that I was allowed to play a ginger afro mage with a yellow robe in D:OS though. But I suppose I would just get spoiled if every game let me do that:)
