  3. I often see an assumption amidst some about things that fall in fantasy or science-fiction categories being "dumb" because they "aren't real", as if it's expected for more realist fiction to be better, smarter, more "serious" or "mature" fiction as a consequence. I don't get this. We've mentioned Borges and Cortázar above, but looking way back in the history we can find numerous examples of utterly fantastical tales amidst some of the most revered and influential texts ever writter, in the form of plays, epic poetry, novels, stories and so on. How are pieces so stooped in mythology and folklore and magic like the Odyssey, the Divine Comedy, the Tale of Tales or The Tempest somehow "dumb", or "dumber" for their inclusion of the supernatural and otherworldly and whatnot? Makes little sense to me. On the topic of the "souls" in Pillars, I don't see what's inherently dumb about the premise, nor do I see an attempt to *pretend* the game is about more than just its surface level. No, the game simply *is* about more than that. To that point I'll simply link my 6500-word review on the first Pillars where I go fairly in-depth about my thoughts on the game, its themes and so on: Much of the above applies to the franchise at large, or at the very least the Watcher's arc as we've seen so far. If the saga is about the transition from a theocentric society and culture to an anthropocentric one, about the inversion in power of the human and the divine and so on, all of which also has basis on the cultural shift in the historical period this setting was inspired by, and if the first game is about essentially putting this thesis forth, the second game is about setting up a situation or crisis where both spheres have no other option but to confront one another and reevaluate their understanding and relationship to eachother in face of this event. My criticism towards Deadfire is that it perhaps acts a bit too much as a bridge between two more interesting stories than it does a meatier chapter of its own right, but nevertheless there is a pretty strong thematic core to the game to which all of the fantastical elements respond to, and don't just act as empty dressing to. If anything I find that in a medium full of Elder Scrolls, Witchers and Dragon Ages, this franchise is amidst the ones *least* culpable for just "pretending" at some deeper thematic concern. Incidentally I've alluded to an oneiric quality - a "strangeness" if you will - in the above review as well which was, as with all of the above, also a major *hook* into the games for me. It seems absurd to me to point this out as a criticism to this game whilst reccuring to both Baldur's Gate and Star Wars of all franchises as examples where it is present, but I also recognize that nothing could be more subjective than what our senses deem "strange" or what we find ourselves hooked by either. Nevertheless, all this talk about what a game "pretends to be" and the assumption that fantasy is inherently dumb makes me think the OP came into the game with some serious biases and preconceptions towards fantasy and fantasy RPGs at large, and maybe a reticence towards interacting on a closer level with its setting, and is letting themselves be guided a little too much by them instead of evaluating the game on its own merits.

  4. Youre probably right. I see a kiwi bird in the post from 23 Jul, which would be hilarious if that's the designated murder weapon.

  6. Uniques aside Battle Axes are totally fine for a dw Fighter. There are good unique ones, too - but as draego said they show up a bit late compared to unique sabres. However, a self-enchanted Battle Axe (exceptional + a lash) will get you a long way. You can even buy an exceptional axe (fake-unique one "Silver Crow Axe") in Defiance Bay a lot earlier than you could usually loot it. Also for a reasonable price. If you get this and put a fitting lash on it (to your liking, most likely you will have collected the required stuff for a burning lash first) then you'll have something nice. "Rimecutter" is among the best dps weapons in the game (because of the speed enchantment) but it's a random thing because it is sold by Azzuro, your travelling Stronghold merchant. Often he didn't offer it to me at all in many playthroughs - sometimes he sold it to me thrice in one playthrough... You can trick the game and Azzuro: at the entrance to Lle a Rhemen on the map Stormwall Gorge you can find a seal on the ground. This can be used to trigger a "wait" dialogue. You can trigger it as often as you want, letting time pass by in the process. Once you unlocked Azzuro you can use this to skip time between Azurro's visits and wait until he offers you Rimecutter. Or you can use the console to give it to you (losing achievements in the process).

  7. Now that the conversation has moved on into something that has nothing to do with The Outer Worlds, I'm locking the thread. I'd encourage anyone interested to start a new one to continue discussing the new topic of the history of politics in media where such a thread belongs: in Way Off-Topic. Thanks all.

  8. @Boeroer you can be zealously stoic. It’s about willpower to a cause, you don’t have to be aggressive about it, just committed to a way of life or cause. there are Berathian Paladins in POE 1 at Raedric’s Keep. No specifics on their order of course.

  10. "Concentration camp, internment centre for political prisoners and members of national or minority groups who are confined for reasons of state security, exploitation, or punishment, usually by executive decree or military order. Persons are placed in such camps often on the basis of identification with a particular ethnic or political group rather than as individuals and without benefit either of indictment or fair trial. Concentration camps are to be distinguished from prisons interning persons lawfully convicted of civil crimes and from prisoner-of-war camps in which captured military personnel are held under the laws of war. They are also to be distinguished from refugee camps or detention and relocation centres for the temporary accommodation of large numbers of displaced persons." - Encyclopaedia Britannica I highlighted part why lots of people call those USA's immigrant internment centres as concentration camps. In heart of EU's immigration crisis is lack of unity in border control, unwillingness to follow EU's immigration laws, desire to let somebody else to solve the problem and unwillingness to work as one to solve the issue. Lots of issues caused by immigration crisis would had prevented if there would have been common rules for EU's border control and agreement that people who seek asylum on EU's border are divided evenly to all EU countries for processing to see if they need international protection according to Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees which all members states of EU have already signed, before EU was formed. Because as we have seen lack of unity and lack of willingness to co-operate has lead to situation where we have hundreds of thousands undocumented people in EU who are able to move from country to country because our freedom of movement agreements which has caused lots of additional work and lots of other problems for officials in member countries as person whose asylum application is rejected in one country moves to another where officials do same work again to determine if person actually needs international protection. When this is combined with countries unwillingness to pay for deporting rejected asylum seekers back to their home countries and increase number of people processing asylum request we have effectively created environment where people can come to EU and seek asylum in one country, get place to sleep, food and some spending money for year or two as their asylum request is processed by over worked officials and when their request is denied they can just go in neighbouring country and repeat. And as there are 28 EU countries they can do that for most of their life.

  11. If that is indeed the plot then it's something of an odd contrivance PS I almost throat punched my cousin's boyfriend because when I showed him the trailer he said that he was surprised and might actually watch it now because it has some action and not boring talking. My cousin is already upset with me because I politely invited the guy to leave. You can talk about me all you want but nobody can bad mouth talky philosophical Trek under my roof.

  12. It seems that the forum software no longer allows editing of old posts and therefore it is not possible to amend the main list. I would not have posted this build here due to that, except that there seem to be no melee ciphers on this thread. Therefore, I present the "The Shattered Mind", a melee cipher whose primary weapon is Shatterstar.

  13. I thoroughly enjoyed both PoE and Deadfire. I certainly hope we haven't seen the last of that IP. It was a RPG for RPG fans. A love letter to days and games gone by. Even if something like that does not have a future it was well worth the time and money spent.

  14. I agree with most of what you say, aside from being shocked by some preferences - not doing Forgotten Sanctum because there is nothing to gain... is beyond my ability to understand :-). Especially, as you claim to care for story more then gameplay. I generally like the changes to the systems they did in Deadfire. However, they did struggle with finding a right difficulty balance. I dislike were it ultimately led, with HP floats in megabosses and DLCs. Having beaten those recently, I must say it was not experience I enjoyed, as megabosses tend to keep “a surprise” until late into the combat (like spider giving injuries, or mage unlocking all sigils permanently) which meant you lost a lot of time just to get screwed by something you couldn’t know was coming. I really enjoyed how Deadfire handled items - I found it simply better then other games, and I found myself constantly torn by what to equip. Unlike yourself, I find myself short on money, as I do tend to upgrade a lot of items I find. I never sell uniques. This game still surprises me. Recently, I wrapped up my third playthrough, this time as Hunter from White that Wends, and ended up supporting Huana. I saw Takehu developers in a different way then usual, and while I quite disliked him before, the transformation and arc he got this time, was quite compelling. I thought that the Woedica addition they made in the last patch, help a lot. Too bad, they didn’t quite nail the sound work, and the new lines when talking to Eothas (be it new new or related to DLCs) sound noticeably different both and sound and volume, played back to back with original content. My main gripe is the ending, and overall lack of narrative forward momentum. I would happily trade one of the DLC, for an expanded Ukaizo which would better flesh out choices you have made throughout your journey. I also disliked how returning companions’ various endings from PoE1 got reduced in scope. There was a promise of change and development that was squashed. I almost wish, they would simply stick to one ending they would find more fitting to Deadfire and develop that, rather then what they did. The fact, that my first playthrough was with endings which really seemed to draw a short straw (Eder being a governor, Pallegina a kind wayfarer, Aloth suppressing Isylmir, and taking over the Leaden Key) might have contributed to this dislike.

  15. Alright, I couldn't contain myself and bought the price reduced season pass... Played it for a couple days already (continued from my post-campaign savegame) and I'd say this is worth the money. Sure it only has a few new mechs and stuff, but the flashpoints are plenty and quite diverse. Spend quite a few hours on them already. Still think that each DLC is not worth the 20 bucks, but the season pass for the (currently) 37 bucks is, because it also includes the third, not yet released DLC. Price / content ratio works for me here.

  17. We have to determine if we mean damage per attack (also counting AoE damage) or single target damage rolls only. Things like Direballs from a rogue, Torment's Reach from a dual wielding monk or Heart of Fury from a dual wielding barb can deal a lot of damage per attack, but not necessarily per hit. Do DoT spells/abilities also count? A chanter with the burning lash on, Secret of Rime and Seven Nights can deal ridicoulous damage when he manages to hit a lot of foes - most of them with three bolts each. Highest AoE damage can be achieved with Combusting Wounds + White Worms I think. You only need to pile up a lot of bodies in front of a chokepoint, cast Combusting Wounds on the incoming crowd an cast White Worms and BOOM - everything is dead - including your headphones. Whenever I have a chanter Raedric gets one-shotted. Same with Concelhaut and friends... But I guess you mean single target non-DoT hits... I once tried out Backstab-Deathblow-crits with Firebrand and all the +crit damage weapons and talents as well as Scion of Flame. I can't remember the numbers though, but is was impressive. I tried to combine this with Finishing Blow, but it didn't work: I got 2 damage - yeah, 2! WTF? If this worked it would be the highest single crit ysou could score I guess. A Bleak Walker with all the FoD talents, including Scion of FLame and Spirit of Decay, shooting with a Blunderbuss against 0 DR could deal very high crits, too. But I think a rogue with a spell that has very high base damage could rule them all. +200% damage (without MIG and elemental booster talent) on a crit with a high damage spell is hard to overcome.

  18. I spent the lat four days camping, swimming and fishing with the pups on some real estate I bought near Realfoot Slough and Indian Creek in north TN. No phone, no internet, no music and no news. Turned it on for the first time today and wish I hadn't. Mass shooting at a fair in CA, the President is really insulting an entire US city, and the Rays lost three out of four. If I ver disappear from these boards don't worry about me... I just went off grid permanently.
