Neverwinter Nights 2 Community Update
June 27, 2007

So this week, we get another peek into one of the new playable races in the Mask of the Betrayer expansion, some great custom prefabs to make your modules more interesting and easier to implement, a couple screen shots from Rogue Dao Studios' Purgatorio mod and the first Persistent World focus for the Community Update. Mask of the Betrayer Secrets: Genasi

With Mask of the Betrayer, Genasi will be making their debut. Many people have been wondering exactly what Genasi are. Hopefully I can answer some of that here.

As a playable race, per the FRCS: "Genasi are descended from elemental-related creatures, such as efreet, dao, djinn, jann, and marids, among others. Most of them have had no direct contact with their elemental forebears, but the signs of their heritage are apparent. Genasi take great pride in their distinctive features and abilities.



Air Genasi (pictured above, in concept art)
Air Genasi see themselves as the inheritors of the sky, the wind and the very air of the world. They appear mostly human, with one or two unusual traits reflecting their quasi-elemental nature, such as a light blue color to their skin or hair, a slight breeze in their presence at all times, or flesh that is cool to the touch. Air Genasi have Darkvision and receive bonuses to Dexterity and Intelligence, but they have penalties to their Wisdom and Charisma as well.

Earth Genasi
Earth Genasi are slow to act, ponderous in thought and set in their ways. They appear mostly human, with one or two traits reflecting their quasi-elemental nature, such as earthlike skin, rough facial features or eyes like black pits. Earth Genasi have Darkvision and receive bonuses to Strength and Constitution, but also have penalties to Wisdom and Charisma.

Fire Genasi
Fire Genasi are hot-blooded and quick to anger, proud and unafraid to take action. They appear mostly human, with one or two traits reflecting their quasi-elemental nature, such as skin the color of burnt coal, red hair that waves like flames or eyes that glow when the Genasi is angry. Fire Genasi have Darkvision and receive a bonus to Intelligence and a penalty to Charisma.

Water Genasi
Water Genasi are patient and slow to change, preferring to wear away opposition slowly, but are capable of great violence in extreme situations. They appear mostly human, with one or two traits reflecting their quasi-elemental nature, such as lightly-scaled skin, clammy flesh, blue-green skin or hair or hair that waves as if underwater. Water Genasi have Darkvision and receive a bonus to Constitution and a penalty to Charisma.


Community Content

Gortan's Magical Fountains


Gortan's Magical Fountains is the first installment of the Gortan’s Magical Gadgets suite. Created for both neophyte and over-worked designers these fountain placeables and pre-fab placeable groups are ready-to-use, as-is. Both visual effects and magical functionality have been included. Just drop a fountain into your module, set the variables on it (to tell it what to do) and walk away. The suite is fully self-contained and all of its components are unique, so that they won’t over-write anyone else’s files or change any game functionality.

Gortan’s Magical Fountains includes 84 placed effects, 80 VFX placeables, 15 blueprints of fountain placeables, 8 pre-fab placeable groups, 4 custom items, and 1 trigger.
The fountain set includes VFXs for twenty fountain styles in both small and medium sizes and for both round and square fountain shapes. Blueprints have been included for VFX-attached invisible placeables for each, as well as for placed effects for each. There are additional placed effects for a larger flowing-water spring and a flowing-water style waterfall. A complete demonstration module has also been included.

Potion of Gaseous Form for NWN2


Ever think to yourself... "Why isn't there a potion of gaseous form in this game. That sure would come in handy at times!" Well, now you can have one. Drinking the potion of gaseous form will transform your pc into a cloud of gas that will make you invulnerable to most attacks and traps, and better yet, will allow you to pass through almost ANY locked door.

For builders, it's easy to implement and can add a new dimension to your development of traps and storylines because you can easily configure any locked door to either allow or disallow passage of a pc in gaseous form through it. Accerak's Potion of Gaseous Form for NWN2 can be found in the Prefab Placeables section of NWVault

Persistent World Spotlight

For this first spotlight, we will be taking a look at The Frontier.



Calisia. . . The Frontier. An uncharted island south west of the Trackless Sea. This is where our story begins and your legend will grow.

With the war machine of the Lich, Kerack Tre'zul, marching strong on the free people of Faerun, hope seemed to be a thing of the past. Only the greatest of cities remained standing, and even their once beautiful lands were corrupted by the touch of evil.

During the Necromantic Wars, 300 brave colonists aboard three Seed-Ships set out to build a colony at the far end of the world. Only two ships survive the trip. . . These were hard times, very hard. The kind of events that test mens' mettle. Those who could not stand against the winds of disaster were swept away, forever.


This is what The Frontier was like in the early days. The first Role Playing Persistent World for Neverwinter Nights 2. The server launched on day one of NWN2's release and is still running today, some 8 months later. Now, the world is something very different. The once unknown island now bears the name of its saviour, a player character by the name of Calis, who sacrificed herself to save the island in one of our epic World Plots. The player run government is stable, after the exile of the player run Fallen Paladins of Tyr who tried to corrupt it. The War that consumed Faerun has ended -- the cities rebuilt and peace restored, allowing trade to begin between Waterdeep and Calisia. The lands have been explored, the cities built up. Tensions still remain between the city of Founder's Falls, where you begin your adventure, and the city of New Luskan, founded by an exiled Pirate Captain from the Sword Coast. Hope is still in sight, though, that their conflict will not end in blood-shed. Everything that has happened in this world has been influenced--if not started and ended--by the players that call The Frontier their home.

We have an extensive, detailed history for players to read and to help them create a character. Events are in real time, and the history is updated frequently to reflect actual events that have been done by players and DMs.

Take a part in both the shaping, and destroying of your surroundings, be you an adventurer, striving for good, or the plotting, evil noble questing to control the lands around you. Anything is possible...

In The Frontier!

Once again, great Community Update, Rob. Thx. original.gif

EDIT: Will Genasi be able to have appearance features such as "red hair that waves like flames"? Will it be one hair style that "waves like flames"? Or would such a feature be applied to any hair style?
Rather than 'waving like flames', Obsidian seems to be setting their hair literally ablaze.

Anyway, I love the concept art, Rob. I don't understand what was happening in that nasty thread on the BioWare forums.
