Politics - Episode 9: The Lurking Fear

Rosbjerg

Recommended Posts

Switching gears, I saw a new batch of articles pushing rumors about a possible Bannon ouster. If true this time I'm not seeing a lot of upside for Trump

Rumors of a Bannon ouster have been bubbling around for a week now, but they've been intensifying. Bannon being ousted would definetly be a big double edged sword for Trump as it'll affect his base and who knows what Bannon would do afterwards.

Wtf? Who the hell vandalizes the Lincoln memorial?

Black Lives Matter is both an organization and a grassroots movement. It has official and unofficial chapters. It has people claiming actions on behalf of the movement. It was not founded to organize racism or black supremacy. It's members or independent actors stand for so many different things that all together it stands for very little. What it does stand against is police brutality and racism. BLM has made some serious errors that I think have really worked against their mission. At the same time, there are a lot of people that want to see their folly wholesale. So it leaves you wondering where some of their critics hearts actually lie.

BLM has a far less black nationalist bend than the Panthers did. Even with the Panthers no doubt they opposed serious issues that needed opposing. I don't think the Panthers are an out right hate group like the Nation of Islam, because the Panthers were quite the conglomerate. Unfortunately the fact that those radicals are out there means that no movement really stays amiable for long. But once a movement has started, those pushing for progress don't have much else of a vector to operate through.

BLM is both over-slandered and under-criticized, with too many people only trying to hit a single nail on the head at a time.

The original Panthers were internationalist as opposed to nationalist. The New Black Panthers are affiliated with Nation of Islam and are Black Nationalist. Ironically Redneck Revolt has more in common with the panthers of the 60's than the NBP. BLM is an impotent hashtag that doesn't mean anything outside of the internet. It's being overblown in a similar manner to another notorious hashtag from a few years ago.

"Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman run the 21st century version of MK ULTRA." - majestic

Maybe it just got TOO associated with the hashtag since it's an extremely decentralized thing. Everything kaineparker mentioned had some centralized leadership, usually around a bunch of elders. BLM didn't have any of that AFAIK.

Not really fair of me to determine or assume what went wrong with it though.

North Korea's missile success...brought to you by *drum roll* Ukraine!

I had a bit of a giggle at some of the articles on the subject trying so very hard to avoid saying 'Ukraine' but using 'ex soviet' and the like instead.

The historical facts of the nazi state was that it was totalitarian; with the government controlling all industry even if they didn't formally own it as in the SU.

Controlling all industry isn't historical fact except from Goebbels 'total war' speech which was Feb '43 just after Stalingrad, from memory, and after which they were on a, well, total war footing. The UK had total governmental control of the economy far far more so than Germany up to that point- anything could be requisitioned, you made what you were told to, ration cards were in effect etc etc. That's why war production in Germany peaked not in 1940, 41, 42 or even 43 but in 1944 despite all the allied bombing and them starting to lose all their mineral resources plus wasting huge resources on dreadful return pie in the sky wunderwaffe; because up to 1943 companies had happily been producing luxury items and the like alongside the tanks and planes.

Right. BLM chants 'death to piggies'; but this targeted shooting of cops wasn't connected to them. Righhhhhhhttttttttt.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

I'm surprised Trump hasn't put up any statues of himself yet tbh.

Nah, he'll ask for an aircraft carrier.

Well, China bought their one and only aircraft carrier from Ukraine. Questions come to mind:

1.Why? <- this probably covers every other question but oh well...

2.What good is one aircraft carrier against 20 or more U.S aircraft carriers that actually work?

3.Is Ukraine an ally of the U.S or China?

The world sure is giving us the middle finger these days with its politics, I want the 90's back. :(

There used to be a signature here, a really cool one...and now it's gone.

TO WIKIPEDIA!

Basically, the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine was stuck with a partially built aircraft carrier, and they wanted to get rid of it.

2. You ask me...

3. It was a business purchase (that's how it was claimed anyway), and the thing was barely more than half built.

Also, they've been working on their own homebuilt carrier which launched earlier this year and I guess is in sea trials atm. Supposed to be fully armed and kitted out by 2020.

Out of complete and honest ignorance of what Iran did in the 90's, not sure what you mean. Though obviously our experiences growing up (I was born in 1983) are different.

What I meant was that back in the 90's, peoples mind weren't polluted with such crap(thanks to the Internet, one would think humanity would use it for good but noooooooo...) and the result is this:

A white supremacist calling the alt-left the intelligent people and identifying the alt-right as a bunch of capitalist zionist judeo christians. And then you have the guys at the alt-right in Charlottesville saying that Kushner shouldn't be Ivanka's husband because he is a Jew, not a christian. HE IS TAINTING THAT WOMEN WITH HIS JEWERY!!!!

Yup, I was born in 1984, I remember the western backed Iraqi government bomb the **** out of my city and drain my country dry but in the end I still prefer that to the bullcrap I see on the news every day. It's as if everyone is both your friend and your enemy at the same time. Living in Tehran nowadays -after all the things that have happened in the past 40 years- it just makes me feel like a low brand of canned dogfood, oh well...I guess it's for the greater good!

and they wanted to get rid of it.

Now how in the world did I miss that? Let me get rid of my assault rifles by selling them to my roommates enemy!

One of the more infamous ones too, since ostensibly it was sold for use as a floating casino then ended up rebuilt as a 'proper' carrier. I couldn't fault Ukraine for selling it anyway, it was just going to sit and rust otherwise and at the time they had zero loyalty to the US.

Selling off rocket motors to the DPRK in 2016/7 is a whole different kettle of fish though, since they put much of the US within at least theoretical rocket range. I won't be holding my breath for condemnation from McCain, Graham et al though.

Paging Agiel...

The Chinese aren't idiots. They know that purchasing Varyag isn't going to turn them into a 21st century naval power capable of going toe to toe with the USN. And it's cheaper and easier to defeat a carrier through massed missile attacks than with another carrier anyway. That was the approach the Soviets took, at least.

The long and short of it is know-how. Technical know-how to some degree because Varyag was already obsolete when they purchased it but they still spent more than a year taking it apart and studying it. But most importantly, operational know-how. Running a carrier safely and effectively is a complex task and the Chinese were millions of man-hours worth of experience behind the US. Even the Russians, according to some reports, don't have a very good grasp on it, judging from Kuznetsov's track record. Unlike Russia however, China seems to be making a sustained effort to be a challenger to US naval supremacy in the long run.
