Question

Hey everyone,

Apologies for not being around on the forums and helping everyone out. Due to my inactivity on the forums, I wanted to post up some fixes everyone can try if you come across some issues with the game that can easily be solved. Please keep in mind that performing these options may or may not fix some of the issues you may encounter.

Verifying/Repairing your Game Cache

Steam:

If you are playing on Steam and you are experiencing something peculiar while playing such as random crashes, missing textures, missing text, or you can't start the game, you most likely have to verify your cache.

1. Go to your Steam Library

2. Right click on Pillars of Eternity

3. Select Properties

4. Click on the Local Files tab

5. Click Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

GOG Galaxy:

The same process cam be performed if you are using GOG Galaxy.

1. Click on Pillars of Eternity in your library

2. Click on More

3. Go to Manage

4. Select Verify/Repair

GOG:

Unfortunately, if you are using GOG, you will have to uninstall the game and download/install using the latest full installers. Please do not use the patches.

Missing Save Files (Updated) 4/9/18

There have have some reports that user saves have been going missing and that you cannot load them. Have no fear, the saves are still located in your save folder. You just need to delete some temp folders to make them reappear again.

Update:

Go to this location

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Obsidian Entertainment\Pillars of Eternity

Then delete the zip file "loadedSave.zip"

Launch your game, and you should now see your save files.

Previous Method:

If you are running any anti-malware software, try disabling it.

Old Method:

Locate your Pillars of Eternity save folder and check to see if your saves are marked as "Read Only". If that is the case, please uncheck the "Read Only" box and hit okay. You should now be able to load your saves properly.

Older Method:

Go into your AppData folder and delete the TempSaveData along with CurrentGame. You can find those folders here: 'C:/Users/Username/AppData/Local/Temp/Obsidian Entertainment/Pillars of Eternity/TempSaveData' and the folder 'CurrentGame' next to it.

But before you do, please zip those folders and email them to support@obsidian.net so we can figure out the root of the problem.

If that does not work for you, try this method discovered by forum user  Mr. E.S. Circomstance

Delete the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Obsidian Entertainment

Delete the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Obsidian Entertainment

Run the game as admin, load the most recent save

Move your char to new area (one that requires a a load screen) and save a new save.

reload that new save (don't exit game)

Save the game over the same save.

Exit the game.

Restart the game

Framerate Issues/Frequent Crashing

There may be various factors contributing to this issue, so take a look at the different fixes to try and solve the problem.

  • Disable Anti-Aliasing
Many users have reported running into framerate issues and frequent crashing. If this is happening on your machine, go to the Graphics options and move the Graphics Quality slider to the left. This will disable anti-aliasing and should help your game's framerate.

  • Lower Resolution
If framerate issues persist after disabling anti-aliasing, then lowering resolution can sometimes add significant increases to performance. This can sometimes help significantly, especially on machines with lower system specifications. We are working on more ways to support performance increases as we patch the client.

  • Clean and Clear Your Computer
Dust and other particles can accumulate on parts of your computer, adversely affecting its efficiency when it attempts to run demanding programs and games. It is also important to make sure there is sufficient access to the ventilation fans for the computer so it can keep itself cool. Make sure to keep your computer or laptop clean and clear to avoid unnecessary strain and overheating.
  • Set Power Options to High Performance
One user discovered that switching the Power Options to High Performance greatly increased their framerate.
  • Run as Administrator
Some users are reporting major performance issues when not running the game as an administrator. If you are noticing issues such as this, please make sure that you are running the game in administrator mode. You can do this by doing the following:
  1. Navigate to the Pillars Of Eternity install folder.
  2. Right-Click on the executable icon.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. On the Compatibility tab, select the Run This Program As An Administrator option.
  5. Click OK.
  6. If you see a User Account Control prompt, accept it.

Make sure to run the game as Admin when you both install and play the game to prevent issues; such as portraits not loading, unable to save, or some crashes.

32-bit Operating System

There are reports of reporting crashing when transitioning on 32-bit machines.  Unfortunately Pillars of Eternity is not fully supported by 32-bit. This issue did come up on Wasteland 2, which is another Unity project, and a workaround was discovered by their fans: here

You can change your system settings on your computer to increase RAM used by a single application.  However, there are inherent risks involved when changing settings involving your operating system and any attempts to change your system settings will be at your own risk.  Obsidian is not liable for any issues that might occur with those settings.

Alternative method for WIndows 10 users:

1. At the administrative command prompt.

2. bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072 (you should receive a confirmation)

3. Restart Windows 10.

------------------------------------------------

I hope that helps you all out. Don't worry, we're still reading the forums and looking out for major issues even though we aren't responding as much as we would like to.

Thanks a bunch!
