The real threat of the Zika Virus

This is becoming a serious concern, there is no vaccine or antidote for this virus and it is caused  by a particularly virulent type of mosquito

About 1-1.5 million people are infected, this is mostly in Brazil. This virus causes horrible birth defects and now has been confirmed that it can be transmitted sexually. 80 % of people  won't show signs but those that do will have rashes, red eyes etc.

So imagine the fear for pregnant women or women wanting to fall pregnant  who live in areas where this virus is active

I wonder, if a woman gets infected by that virus through a mosquito, but the virus goes dormant like they often do, could her baby suffer from birth defects if she becomes pregnant many years after the infection?

I haven't seen anything specific about that but while it should be a theoretical possibility it isn't like malaria where it's a chronic problem- it would likely be similar to something like chickenpox/ shingles where it's usually a second acute burst which may not even happen. Exposure to related dengue fever gives permanent immunity to the particular strain at least and that is a closely related virus, so it probably is the same for Zika.

At this point there isn't even a definite link between the virus and microcephaly established, there's no need to panic.

What if Zika is an engineered virus, created by the antichrist under the Vatican, to curtail population growth?

Somebody needs to keep those guys in the Vatican up to date! Don't they know that we will run out of oil in the next few decades and the total collapse will lead to the death of half if not two thirds of the worlds population?

Seeing as it doesn't do anything to curb the birthrate they did a pretty ****ty job.

Well the suggestion in some South American countries from there health departments is " dont fall pregnant or hold back from trying "

So indirectly it does impact birth rate...you don't want child born who suffers from Zika. Have you see what they look like, they have these disproportionately small heads and there is normally brain damage

For some reason I had it in my head that microcephaly was fatal / had a high mortality rate, but just now looking it up it seems not the case. Oh well, so much for that conspiracy. :(

Is this the beginning of the zombie apocalypse? No? Ok, I'll go back to ignoring it then.

The funny thing is, I can see the virus spreading to Europe. Last years summer was so freaking hot we had a mosquito plague from early summer till mid autumn, and yes, there were tiger mosquitoes among them. I see no reason not to start having exotic plagues in those hot summers, last year several months the weather around here was hotter than in Egypt.

And there are large bodies of still water that are perfect breeding grounds.

Another way the virus can spread is someone travels from a Zika country and he has the virus, he could have sex with someone who now becomes infected. Then mosquitoes feed on either of them and then previously uninfected mosquitoes spread it further

Good read, once again it becomes the womens problem...." you want to avoid Zika, don't fall pregnant "

And the men are left alone to just have sex when they want and with who they want

But no matter how you twist and turn it, in the very end it is the woman's decision on who to allow into her secret garden. Anything else is rape. You want to rob her of her agency to decide this for herself? That's quite misogynic and problematic.

CDC: Zika definitely causes severe birth defects

Confirming the worst fears of many pregnant women in the United States and Latin America, U.S. health officials said Wednesday there is no longer any doubt the Zika virus causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and other severe brain defects.

Since last year, doctors in Brazil have been linking Zika infections in pregnant women to a rise in newborns with microcephaly, an unusually small skull. Most experts were cautious about drawing a firm connection. But now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says enough evidence is in.

Good post, I  am very concerned with the consequences for this and it does have global consequences if it spreads
