Not-Terrible Conversation/Dialogue Builds in 2.0?

Howdy,

 

With the massive stat rejiggering that's gone on since launch, I feel like all of my knowledge about the game is completely useless nowadays in the post-expansion world of 2.0.

 

I'd very much like to start the game over with a conversation- and/or dialogue-optimized build. Class doesn't matter (but a class with unique dialogue options or a class that isn't represented by an in-game companion would be neat), race doesn't matter. I can roleplay either of those once the build is set.

 

I mostly just don't want my main character to be absolutely and utterly useless in combat. I'll probably play on Normal or Hard because I do enjoy the tactical element of the game, and I'd like it if my main character contributed to that somehow, even if it was just debuffs/cc/etc.

 

So, basically:

 

Which class/race combo is the best to go for, if I am very adamant about having 18 Resolve, 18 Perception, and 18 Intelligence? :-D

The Paladin is a nice class for your desired stats. There are also some dialogue options for paladins. A priest would also be good - special dialogue options as well (especially Skaen or Magran or Eothas). Barbarian is also ok with that stats - especially if you use a stunning or overbearing weapon.

 

If possible, take laborer or clergyman as background, that will also give extra dialogue choices.

 

Dex doesn't need to be high if you choose paladin or priest, same for con. Might should be a little higher for better healing and damage.

 

Race doesn't really matter. For a more tanky build, you can take wild orlan. That will also give some bonuses on res and per and will open up a special dialogue option in the crucible keep, but it's not very important.

I'd suggest picking two out of your three stats instead of going for 18 with three of them. Two is easy, everything can be 10 and you can have two 19s. getting three 18s means that you need to dump six points out of the other three. That means something is a four or all are eights. Low Might, Dex and Con is bad for just about every build.

 

Plus you can't pick more than one dialogue choice anyway. Perception gets you more info, intellect lets you be clever and resolve makes people do what you want them to do. My thought is that if you are clever you don't need to be forceful and vice versa. Both work well with Perception.

 

If you are intent on going through with the three 18s I'd suggest a Tanky Chanter.

 

Boreal Dwarf Chanter

 

Might 10 or 5

Con 12 or 17

Dex 2

Per 18

Int 18

Res 18

 

Have him use guns and weapon and shield while wearing plate. Long chant linger, big AoE for chants and Invocations, has good deflection.

You only really need Intellect or Resolve to cover the huge majority of conversations, with Perception providing some options on the side. That means just about any offtank with Perception and Resolve, or any DPS character with Perception and Intellect, should be able to handle basically all conversations.

If I'm typing in red, it means I'm being sarcastic. But not this time.

Dark green, on the other hand, is for jokes and irony in general.

And boy do I wish I'd realized that about Res before!  Good thing I don't mind multiple playthroughs....  Couldn't figure out why I didn't get certain convo choices - until I read that it's all your PC's stats, not those of others.

I found Resolve to be the single most important attribute for conversations and influencing quest outcomes.  Luckily my first character was a Paladin with 18 Resolve.  After that, Intellect was most important.  Perception was commonly used in conversations but always seemed to unlock trivial options (you'd notice some detail but no outcomes would be changed).  And don't forget the Lore and Survival skills, which unlock some options.

Yeah..... but unless you can "fix" how many points you have to begin with using IEMod, you're always going to be short somewhere....  I've found Lore a lot more important than Survival, but that may be something with my own play style.
