What did I just do? I sacrificed myself to some stone..?

Recommended Posts

I was doing a mission where I had to go and retrieve ancient weapons. Then there was this face symbol that talked to me. I chose to 2 options that I preferred most - working best with allies and turning my sufferings into my strength..The place was crawling is spiders and with specters. I defeated them all, including that spider creature that wanted to leave with some stone. Then I went back to that room with symbols on the floor and made 2 party members stand on each of 2 symbols that glowed. Then the face symbol asked me if I want to sacrifice myself to some stone. I did and now have this stone and it seems like it does something with enchanting? I realized I could use that small pool of water on top of a pedestal vase or some kind. The only thing I can enchant is a worthless green spear that costs 5 coins with some recipe... I did not do it. Should I? What did I sacrifice exactly and what are the benefits? I thought I could enchant items back in my stronghold if I build that house that will have enchanters. So whats the point of that small pool pedestal? I am SO confused...

Name of worthless spear is Cladhaliath and the name of recipe is Engwithan Soul Spear...

You transmute a part of your soul (which has no gameplay effects, you're not giving half your life away or anything) in order to enchant an item unique to you, a one-time process where you talk with the stones in the rooms on the left to choose the enchantments you want.

You should speak to the stones in the level and read what they say to get an idea.

(It can be a useful spear situationally, but it's not Super Awesome Good.)

You can upgrade weapons and armors anywhere you are provided you have the right resources. Same with potions and scrolls, if your in the middle of the dungeon you can just make the stuff right there and press on. What you build at the stronghold are just some merchants who will sell you reagents and some rather normal weapons.

For the quest in question, the spear Cladhalíath will be upgraded based on how you answered the stones (as you can imagine): Wiki details below:

http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Cladhal%C3%ADath

Now, the instructions to make the spear are as follows:

You must defeat the Nridek and take the Soul Vessel and his(her?) brain. Go into the forging chamber and interact with the stone. Answer its question and move to second stone, located on the doorway arch to next room. Interact and answer the question. Now you have two symbols that represent your personality.

For Spear: You must have soul vessel in hand with two companions on corresponding symbols they chose in other rooms. The symbol should light up beneath each companion when they step on the pressure plates.

Once both are activated, walk up to the top of the stairs in the Transference Chamber and you will watch a cut-scene. After the second cut-scene, an orb appears over a little podium at bottom of stairs. Interacting with it to bring enchanting window and place spear and vessel into crafting pane and hit enchant to make it special.

Bear in mind that sparing Nridek will forfeit your chance at doing this quest and getting the spear.

The other option is more appealing to me personally. Especially since that weapon isn't really worth fighting an unnecessary fight. The one time my curiosity got the better of me, I instantly gave it away to Hiravias.

The "x1.2 damage against against proned, stunned and flanked enemies" option makes it a great weapon for rogues, since they'll usually be attacking enemies with one of those afflictions anyway.

Though I suppose "+4 Accuracy and x1.25 damage when attacking the same enemy as an ally" works just as well.

The "Exceptional: +8 Accuracy and x1.3 damage" option is a total ripoff, since you could easily add that yourself.

It's also the only way to have a lifeleeching spear, if you're into that.

God knows why you couldn't choose the type of weapon, of course.

There are enough unique Estocs and Sabres already.

You can also get a spear that stuns on hit. Spears have inherent +5 accuracy, so if you wield it without a second weapon or a shield, you get a total of +17 accuracy. Slap another effect on it for +4 accuracy (21), then Exceptional (29). Crits become likely and they stun.

Or you can build a Fire Godlike Barbarian with Blooded, wearing He Carries Many Scars (or Pallegrina's breastplate) and dual wielding two spears, each with Valiant. Valiant can grant +10 accuracy AND +25% damage. Mantle of Dying Boar and Stalwart Defiance complete the picture.

Basically it's for people with imagination.

Actually, it's best property is that it stuns on crits (if you enchant it that way) - it's not that hard to get a high hit to crit conversion on your  character (like, hearth orlan + unique scale mail + potion is already 35% on any character and there are also rogues, priest buffs & upgraded paladin aura) so you can get lots of control that way.

Is that the only spear I can upgrade? Can I upgrade my other weapons and armor? I sold the damn Spear - to hell with it. I want MOAR DAMAGE with my other weapons.

You cannot upgrade any other weapons or armors in such a grandiose fashion. As I said in my earlier post, right-click on any weapon and at the bottom of the description box there is the option to click "Enchant" and "Compare." Click Enchant and you will then be presented with the list and categories of upgrades you can apply to that weapon, if you have the stats.

The tricky part in understanding this system, for me at least, is the limit 12. You see, each enchant carries a set number that adds to the amount of enchants that can be applied to a weapon. For instance, you want to add the following upgrades to your new weapon: Superb, Slaying (Kith), Burning Lash

Superb is a +6

Slaying (Kith) is a +4

Shocking Lash is a +2

So that is a grand total of 12, the maximum available enchant space.

But, if the weapon already has an enchant on it, then you have a complication.

Lets say its a dagger with the speed enchant, that is a +2

That would be all of the previously enchants plus speed: 12+2 = 14.

The problem here is that we have gone over the available enchant space, so something is going to have to give. In this case you can downgrade you Slaying(Kith) Enchant to a Slaying(Beast) Enchant which is just a +2 not a +4.

So that's

Speed +2

Superb is a +6

Slaying (Beast) is a +2

Shocking Lash is a +2

Equals: 12 - you thus have enough room for all of your enchants!

Does every piece of gear in the game have the same enchant limit (12)? Is there a list of the plus amount every enchant costs?

Yes, all available enchants and their point cost can be viewed on the items you click. All weapons and armors have the same enchant limit, which is 12. Shields are different in that they can only have their quality upgraded, so every shield can be upgraded to Superb if they don't have added enchants totaling over 6 (not counting Fine or Exceptional, as those get replaced).

Unlike in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, where the player could put any enchantment they wanted on an item, there are certain enchants such as Defiant and Speed that can only be found on looted armors and weapons. So while you can buff up standard plate to be very good, you might want to hold off on using that adra dragon scale until you get a chestpiece with the enchantments you want on it.

Enchantments can also not be removed, so if you make a mistake you will have to reload or be stuck with your choice. So the system does require some planing. This is really only an issue with the rarer ingredients such as adra dragon scales and sky dragon eyes.

With imagination, I was afraid to sacrifice a part of myself just for a spear... (Even if there is no gameplay effet.) So I loaded. :D

Been some time, but I'm bringing this up again, since I just noticed that you can get that spear in question without any bloodshed and without doing the Dozens quest.

I choose the Doemenels, went through the meeting and was just on my merry way to Twyn Elms, when I happened to stop at the ruins in question noticing that the stair symbol was there smack in the middle. I descended, went through the spider trash mobs and just out of curiosity descended further to where you should pick up the weapons for the Dozens and meet that Vithrac you can either let go or fight. I let him go and there on the altar or table behind him was the spear.
