So this week so far there's Dreamfall Chapters, Jagged Alliance Flashback, Massive Chalice beta, and Long War beta 14 (which is damn near a release candidate). And that's just the stuff that's landed in my inbox, Civ:BE being the obvious omission. Games, games everywhere!

After the summer drought we should all run around with arms spreads and hug each other.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Yeah, both Dreamfall and JAF keys were delivered silently through Humble Bundle, if you didn't know you needed to use the key resender to get the games, you'd never get them. Bit of an odd mechanism, since as far as I can tell, Humble doesn't send any notification despite the products being tied to your email address.

On using the key resender just today, I found another couple of games tied to my email that I'd never gotten around to 'claiming' to my account in the first place, suspect they'd been there for a good while now. :ninja: Wish the tool was smart enough to mark which titles in the list are already linked to the account, but I guess usability was never their strong suit.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition to come out next month:

http://www.pcgamer.com/icewind-dale-enhanced-edition-will-be-out-this-month/

The presence of the "Experience the Story" difficulty mode seems to be the sad product of the direction Bioware was going; there was a comment I felt was pretty bang-on:

"a new difficulty mode that will allow players to experience the story without having to struggle through repeated beat-downs" Come on now...this game was built for the combat. There almost may as well not even be a story.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

Well, well, well. 10 years on, World of Warcraft opens Australian locally-hosted servers. Sadly too late for my own time, but that's a pretty significant development - especially in the wake of the closure of SWTOR's local servers which finished off my interest in that game.

And that "special peering arrangement" is being done with my ISP too, geez. With character transfers to them being free as well, I'll have a test with a trial account to check out the difference: the average latency back in my raiding days was 400ms, which was a bigger foe than any raid boss.

I think there is a place for casual mode in gaming. Some people who once played computer games to excess now have much less free time because of a career, never-ending home repair, car problems, supporting a family, &c. They probably want to experience an enjoyable visual adventure without all the time-consuming grinding.

Seems to me, and this is just a personal opinion, that stripping out the combat and challenge of IWD would rob the game of any satisfaction or fun. IWD has some of the finest encounter design of the IE games in my opinion, and casting that aside doesn't seem sensible, the rules, tactics and effective strategies are hardly difficult to learn or master and doing so is more than worth the pay off.

It seems like sitting down to a game of Chess with Mr Kasparov, but not wanting to learn how to play, or move any of the pieces. Visual adventures should in my opinion remain on film, and interactive experiences remain in games.

If it's a matter of time, then simply play a couple of hours per night, without a gutted experience.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

Tea for the teapot!

What heresy is this.

Maybe so, but Icewind Dale?  The "visual adventure" in that game is pretty bare-bones.

While I agree with the concept that Icewind Dale is little outside its combat, I'm not sure how adding an optional low difficulty mode is "stripping out the combat and challenge of IWD". You'll certainly still have that, and they might pull in a few more buys from casuals - or people who don't cherish the thought of the required level of micro on a tablet.

In my mind, the "Experience the Story" difficulty mode can be beaten with all your PCs being Deep Gnome fighters wielding quarterstaves and wearing the shirts on their backs.

Time to kick ass and chew bubblegum again

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

Going to assume she isn't playable?

Who cares?

Going by the cross I'm going to guess she is either a Templar or a German WW veteran.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

The amount of marketing going into this character kinda gave me a need to ask the question.
