- I did not search the forums for a similar topic.

First of all: Divinity: Original Sin just had a massive update! (UI, Options, Features, Mechanics, Presentation, Background pic in loading screen now, previously control bindings)

And it is awesome *nod*

Regardless, I went into their options and messed around a little bit with it. One thing I noticed was that they use lots of horizontal scrollbars.

Example: Sound Options
- They range from 0-100
- A slider

My suggestion is to have number inputs as well, 3 decimals. A small box where the number is shown.

It is a minor detail that's not really necessary, but I thought about it and reflected on Pillars of Eternity and wanted to hear some thoughts.

Have a slider with notches and the ability to change the values precisely in an INI file. If anyone is pedantic enough to want exact numbers, they should be happy to do it in notepad.

 

Should be 3 tiers of options, have as many options as possible but hide them from most users:

 

Options

Advanced Options (turns on more options)

INI (with annotation, at worst with min/max and expected values, at best with explanations of what the option does)

 

Add an INI editor if you're feeling generous and the options get out of control.

i'd rather they go the other way: have just the sliders without numbers (e.g. [property] |--------[]---|).

 

it gets rid of the sadness, that is a numeric value without it's scale, and it shifts the focus from this meaningless number back to the output effect (actual loudness of the sounds, or brightness of the picture).

 

 

 

config editing would be nice to have though.

 If something is continuous, like sounds volume, I would rather have a slider without notches. Otherwise you only really have two options: too loud and too soft.

 

 If something is discrete, like difficulty levels, I'd rather have radio buttons or a selection menu instead of pretending to be a slider.

 

 Down with notches! Buenos noches, notches! We don't need no steeenking notches! Etc.

I meant notches as in a simple scale so you have a visual reference. Technically all sliders have discrete points that you don't like.

 

 I see. I thought you were talking about something like what the IE games had for volume control - something like 10 discrete levels controlled by something that looked like a slider. I agree with you for continuous variables and, yes, strictly speaking, they all have discrete levels; I just want a lot more than 10 - enough to simulate a continuous control.

 

 (I would still rather have a non-slider for something with a few discrete points like difficulty level.)
