I can't find any topic about that but for this sort of game is very important to have guilds like thieves, merchants, assassines, mages. Player could have some interesting informations from them, special items and abilities, but belonging to guild would require devotion for example - being caught on stealing - and you're thrown out from merchants guild.

Another thing is religion and beliefs, you could choose your own God and sacrifice for it items and animals, to have blessings, also philosophical quasi guilds like in Planescape Torment would be nice.

I hate hate thieves and assassin's guilds. At least calling them guilds. Call them what they are: the mafia. The term 'guild' should only be applied by these groups with the utmost irony...

I think the word mafia would be to modern term and not really fitting these organisations ads they are depicted in most games and fiction, and thieves guild is massively related to medieval fantasy trope.

Maybe call them organization, or syndict, there are many terms, that said, guidl works, I mean what they do are iligale but it still follows in most fantasy games what a guild would, do they protect their own turf, help their people and keep secrets of their job to themselves, thieves guild is a guild.

Also it all depends on a trope, you may have a thieves guild that is basicly bunch thugs that threten and rob people, or you can have a bunch of gentelmen thieves who don't really steal for money , and just break in at night as a challange.

Yes, I'd enjoy distinct factions with different philosophies (even similar factions which differ in philosophy) and different perks for rising through their ranks. Hell yes.

Remember: Argue the point, not the person. Remain polite and constructive. Friendly forums have friendly debate. There's no shame in being wrong. If you don't have something to add, don't post for the sake of it. And don't be afraid to post thoughts you are uncertain about, that's what discussion is for.

Pet threads, everyone has them. I love imagining Gods, Monsters, Factions and Weapons.

Yes I think the term 'guild' used in association with a class is completely lacking in cultural depth. It doesn't bespeak any history and lacks character. For example, why not call one city's thieves' guild the "Freeborn Society", name a fighter's guild the "Solemn Blades", and give the mage guild the label "Chantric Arcanum"?

About the word guild : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild

So Thiefs Guild would kinda of work, but it is pretty much straight forward. It works for some settings, but the more one plays these games and reads fantasy you want things to be more complicated/sophisticated? Me being below avarage intelligence gets his inetellgence offended. A smart thief wont brag that he is a thief and Thiefs Guild wouldnt simply go by that name.

They would be an organisation, under different name, they would oparate just enough beyond the law to reach their goals and close enough to never be taken and names should be smart, to trick people thinking it is legit, like "Federal Reserve Bank". Name would imply it is goverment run, yet it is privat organisation, that lends it services to the goverment, that in turn enslaves evryone through artificialy created debt. Now that is SMART thiefs guild. Not like Robin Hoods gang we are accustomed to belive is supposed to portray good old robber gang. I would like to see some of smart thiefs. Not all hooded, shady characters standing at the corner flipping his knife or something like that, or quite rich nobleman doing it for adrenaline kick, thrill of it. While I appreciate good cliche (magetower FTW!) I would like rest of you really like to see some smart moves made by devs on guild subject.

So yes,

A Thieves' Guild might be something they call themselves, rather than the authorities. And historically, local authorities tend to work very closely with these types of organizations behind closed doors. There's plenty of political intrigue to be roleplayed if the town mayor secretly wants an outspoken opposition member assassinated. Or some new trading cartel is muscling in on local business, and union bosses want them quietly and discreetly removed. Corruption is everywhere. And so in effect, a Thieves' Guild does in fact provide a service.

Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for.

Yes, exactly. In HBO ROME series, this is exactly what Julius Cesar did. I would like us see being able to use the same methods or for roleplaying purposes, resist temptation to use those services.

Guild is good word to describe organizations that I think about. One of them can work official. Member of other will decline that it exists. When the mystery with that organization is bigger, and head of organization/guild is anonymous than better. It could be puzzle to be solved, or possibly not...

Most of organizations would like to gain power/authority and money, other would function because of their philosophical and religious reasons. Like I mentioned Planescape Torment was pioneer in that.

This is other world and here, could be other questions to ask, or the answer could be different.

What is the meaning of life?

Does the Creatures from this world are believe in coexistence? Are they equal?

Are the true gods/god really existing, or there are only false idol?

What is a soul?

Does fate or destiny really exist?

etc.

That are my suggestions. For example there could be an organization that doesn't believe that soul really exists, afterlife is a lie, and they are attacking every cult-place, to make false (in their mind) deities weaker, and thrown them from the world away.
