issues with installing the game

Hi,

 

I bought the game and am trying to install it. I start the installation and it wouldn't let me to proceed with install unless I install steam. Why? Can I install DSIII without steam? Then even if I agree to install steam, it stops the installation, saying that installing the game and steam requires 39111 Mb of space. The box says it requires 4 Gb for full installation, which I have about 10 gb on my hd.

Well, I avoided the problem by downloading the steam and then installing the game seperately. The new problem, however, is I can't start the game now. When I try to start the game, I get a Microsoft message saying that the program has encountered a problem and must close. Any ideas as to what is wrong now?

 

 

I reinstalled the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages 2005, 2008, and 2010 installed. Didn't help. I have Windows XP Pro, SP3, intel 6600 2.4 Ghz dual core, 3.25 Gb of Ram, Radeon X1950 Pro 256 Mb.
